Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh runs from the easy colonial hill stations of Shimla and Dalhousie, through the trekking and backpacker valleys around Manali and Kasol, to the Tibetan Buddhist town of Dharamshala and the high-altitude desert of Spiti. The hill towns suit April to June and September to November; Spiti has a short June-to-October window.

About Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh is India's most accessible slice of the western Himalaya, and it works at several levels of ambition. Shimla and Dalhousie are gentle, colonial-era hill stations that need no acclimatisation. Manali and Kasol add trekking, backpacker culture and easy access to higher valleys. Dharamshala, seat of the Dalai Lama, adds a Tibetan Buddhist layer and a calmer pace. Spiti Valley, beyond the main Manali-Leh highway, is a different order of trip altogether: a high-altitude desert of monasteries and moonscapes that needs real time and acclimatising.
Shimla
The former British summer capital, with a walkable Mall Road and toy-train access from the plains.
Manali
The main gateway to the higher valleys, trekking routes and the Manali-Leh highway.
Dharamshala
The Dalai Lama's seat in exile, with McLeod Ganj's monasteries and Tibetan culture.
Spiti Valley
A high-altitude Buddhist desert valley beyond the main tourist trail, needing real acclimatisation.
Kasol
A backpacker village in the Parvati Valley, popular for gentle trekking and riverside cafes.
Dalhousie
A quieter colonial-era hill station, less crowded than Shimla or Manali.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to November suit the main hill towns, Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Kasol and Dalhousie, with midsummer bringing crowds escaping the plains' heat. Spiti Valley is a shorter window, roughly June to October, once the Kunzum and Rohtang passes clear of snow; winter closes most of the high routes entirely.
How many days do you need
A Shimla-Manali circuit runs comfortably at around seven days. Dharamshala adds two to three more if travelling from Delhi. Spiti Valley, given the driving distances and the need to acclimatise, wants its own dedicated week or more and is not a good add-on to a shorter trip.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Himachal Pradesh?
April to June and September to November for the main hill towns. Spiti Valley has a shorter window, roughly June to October, and is snowbound the rest of the year.
Can I visit Spiti Valley as a short add-on?
Not really. The driving distances are long and altitude needs respecting, so Spiti works best as its own dedicated trip rather than a quick add-on to Shimla or Manali.
Which Himachal town is best for a first-timer?
Shimla or Manali, both of which need no acclimatisation and offer an easy introduction to the hills.
Is Dharamshala only for Buddhist pilgrims?
No, McLeod Ganj's monasteries, cafes and mountain views draw a broad mix of travellers, not only those with a Buddhist interest.
