Depends on what the family wants — North Goa has more activity and amenities nearby; South Goa is quieter and better suited to a lower-key, beach-focused stay.
Do beach resorts close during the monsoon?
Many independent shacks and some smaller properties close or scale back roughly June to September; larger resorts generally stay open with reduced beach activity.
Is Varkala walkable, or do you need a car?
The main cliff strip is very walkable; a car is useful for reaching it initially and for any day trips beyond the immediate area.

Goa: North versus South
North Goa (Baga, Calangute, Anjuna) has the busier beaches, markets and nightlife, with resorts ranging from budget shacks-adjacent stays to larger properties. South Goa (Palolem, Agonda, Majorda) is quieter, with fewer beach shacks and a slower pace — generally the better choice for travellers who want to properly relax rather than be near the action.
Kerala's coast
Varkala's cliffside stays overlook the beach directly, with a walkable strip of cafes and shops along the cliff edge. Kovalam has a longer beach-resort tradition and a range of larger properties.
How to choose
- Want nightlife and options nearby: North Goa
- Want to properly slow down: South Goa or Varkala
- Combining with backwaters and hills: Kerala's coast fits naturally onto the end of a Kerala itinerary
- Best season: November to February for both regions, driest and most comfortable
