Alleppey: Kerala's Backwaters and Houseboat Capital

Travel guideKerala

Alleppey, officially Alappuzha, is Kerala's backwater capital: a network of canals, paddy flats and Vembanad Lake where the classic way to stay is a night or two aboard a traditional kettuvallam houseboat. Experience My India suggests one to two nights here, treated as a place to slow down rather than a box to tick, usually as the backwater leg of a longer Kochi-to-Varkala route.

Why go to Alleppey

Alleppey is where most people mean when they say they want to see Kerala's backwaters. The town sits on Vembanad Lake, the hub of a network of canals and waterways that thread through Kuttanad, a stretch of paddy country so low-lying that farming happens below sea level. The classic way to experience it is a kettuvallam — a traditional rice barge with a curved thatched roof, converted into a houseboat with cabins, a deck and a cook on board.

Kerala's own famous-for list puts houseboats and backwaters first for a reason: nowhere else in the state gives you a whole day and night of moving water, palm banks and village life going by at walking pace.

  • Vembanad Lake

Kerala's largest lake and the hub the backwater routes fan out from.

  • Kettuvallam houseboat cruise

The classic way to see the backwaters — a thatched rice barge repurposed with cabins, a deck and an on-board cook.

  • Kuttanad paddy country

Waterlogged farmland worked below sea level, best seen by canoe alongside the houseboat routes.

  • Alleppey beach and lighthouse

A quieter stop on the coast at the edge of town, away from the backwater crowds.

  • Nehru Trophy Boat Race

Kerala's best-known snake-boat race, held on Punnamada Lake near Alleppey most years in August.

How long to stay and when to go

Experience My India's own region guide suggests one to two nights in the backwaters, and for most itineraries that means one night aboard a houseboat. It is enough time to cruise out from the jetty, moor for the night in a quieter side canal, and cruise back the next morning — the point is stillness, not covering ground.

October to March is the most reliable window across Kerala, with dry, comfortable weather for sitting out on a houseboat deck. The backwaters stay navigable and scenic through the June-to-September monsoon too — the paddy fields turn a deeper green — but expect daily rain. April and May are hot and humid on the coast and low country.

Getting there and around

The nearest major gateway is Cochin International Airport (COK), north of Alleppey; most visitors arrive by private car as part of a wider Kerala route rather than as a stand-alone trip. Once in Alleppey, the point is to get off wheels entirely: houseboats and canoes are how the backwaters are actually explored.

Where to stay

The overnight houseboat is the defining Alleppey stay — a private kettuvallam with one or more cabins, moored on a quiet canal after dinner. For travellers who prefer a fixed bed, backwater resorts and heritage-style properties on the lake edge offer the same views with a day cruise instead of an overnight one, and homestays in the canal villages put you closer to Kuttanad's working paddy life.

Frequently asked questions

Is one night on a houseboat enough in Alleppey?

Yes, for most travellers. Experience My India's suggested stay is one to two nights, and a single overnight cruise covers the core experience — cruising out, mooring on a quiet canal, and cruising back.

What is a kettuvallam?

A traditional Kerala rice barge with a curved bamboo-and-thatch roof, converted into a houseboat with cabins and a deck for tourism.

Is the monsoon a bad time to visit the backwaters?

Not necessarily — the backwaters stay navigable and turn a deeper green through the June-to-September monsoon, but expect daily rain rather than the drier October-to-March window.

How does Alleppey fit into a wider Kerala trip?

It is usually the backwater leg of a longer route linking Kochi, Munnar and the coast at Varkala or Kovalam, rather than a stand-alone destination.

Is Alleppey the same as Alappuzha?

Yes. Alappuzha is the official name; Alleppey is the name most commonly used in travel contexts.
