Frequently asked questions

What are my chances of seeing a tiger?

Real, but never certain. Ranthambore is known for its tiger sightings, yet tigers move as they please, and no one can promise you one. More drives mean more chances: our packages include two or three safaris, and more can be added if wildlife is your main aim, subject to permits for your dates. Leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles, deer and many birds live in the park too.

Do I need to book safari permits before I travel?

Yes, as early as your dates allow. Safari permits are sold online through the Rajasthan Forest Department, and Rajasthan Tourism advises booking in advance. On our packages the safaris are booked for you once your dates are firm, with park fees or permits included as each package lists. The Forest Department controls the zones, times and permits, so no one can honestly promise you a particular zone.

What is the difference between a Gypsy and a canter?

A Gypsy is a small open jeep; a canter is a larger open vehicle that seats more people. The Ranthambore Luxury Tiger Safari includes two private Gypsy safaris, while the 3 Days Ranthambore National Park Tour and Tiger Safari and Taj Mahal include jeep or canter safaris, confirmed in your written quote. If a jeep matters to you, say so when you enquire; it depends on the permits available for your dates.

Is April to June too hot for a safari?

It is hot. May afternoons average over 40°C at Jaipur and Kota, the nearest weather stations, and an open vehicle has no shade. Some wildlife watchers choose these months anyway, because a drier, thinner forest and fewer water holes can make animals easier to find. Morning drives are the coolest part of the day; bring a hat, sunscreen and water, and rest through the midday heat.

What clothes and kit do I need for an open-vehicle safari?

Muted colours such as khaki, olive and brown suit the forest better than white, black or bright prints. From December to February an open vehicle at dawn is cold, with January nights averaging about 8°C at Jaipur and 11°C at Kota, so bring a warm layer, a hat and gloves; in summer, sun protection and water. Keep phones silent and flash off, and bring binoculars if you have them.

Can I visit Ranthambore Fort?

Yes. The fort, built by the Chauhan rulers in the 10th century, stands inside the park and is one of Rajasthan's World Heritage hill forts; pilgrims come for the Trinetra Ganesh temple within its walls. The 3 Days Ranthambore National Park Tour and the Ranthambore Luxury Tiger Safari each include a visit. Wear comfortable shoes for the walk.

Why go to Ranthambore

Ranthambore National Park, 14 km from Sawai Madhopur, was once a private game reserve of the royal house of Jaipur, and in 1973–74 it became one of India's first tiger reserves. Its dry deciduous forest holds tigers, leopards, sloth bears, hyenas and crocodiles, with chital, sambar and nilgai. The park takes its name from Ranthambore Fort, built by the Chauhan rulers in the 10th century and now one of Rajasthan's World Heritage hill forts; the Trinetra Ganesh temple inside its walls draws pilgrims as well as visitors. More in our Ranthambore travel guide.

How many days to give Ranthambore

Our packages give the park two or three nights. The 3 Days Ranthambore National Park Tour and the Ranthambore Luxury Tiger Safari each spend two nights, with two safaris and a visit to Ranthambore Fort. Tiger Safari and Taj Mahal gives it three nights and three safaris, after a sunrise at the Taj in Agra and before two nights in Jaipur. If wildlife is the main reason for your trip, ask for three or four drives: each safari is a fresh chance, in a different zone or a different light.

When to go

Rajasthan Tourism lists the park as open from October to June. October to March brings cool mornings: January nights average about 8°C at Jaipur, the nearest airport city, so an open vehicle at dawn is cold. From March the forest dries and thins, and animals tend to stay near the remaining water, which can help sightings, but May afternoons average over 40°C at Jaipur and Kota. In the July–September monsoon, safaris are limited at best and depend on the Forest Department and the weather. Our guide to the best time for a wildlife safari in India compares the seasons.

How to reach Ranthambore

The park is 14 km from Sawai Madhopur, whose station has direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur. The nearest airport is Jaipur, about 150 to 170 km away, three and a half to four hours by road; the Ranthambore Luxury Tiger Safari starts and ends there with a private car. On Tiger Safari and Taj Mahal you come on from Agra, and on the 3 Days Ranthambore National Park Tour your car and driver handle the transfers. Train fares to Sawai Madhopur are not included in any package.

What our Ranthambore tour packages include

Each package includes your own car and driver, and safaris with park fees or permits arranged. The 3 Days Ranthambore National Park Tour plans two jeep or canter safaris, in different zones where possible, and a fort visit. Tiger Safari and Taj Mahal has three safaris, local guides in Agra and Jaipur, hotels or lodges as confirmed at enquiry and daily breakfast. The Ranthambore Luxury Tiger Safari has two private Gypsy safaris, two nights at a named resort near the park with breakfast and dinner, the fort and transfers from Jaipur. Extra safaris, camera fees, flights and insurance cost extra.

How to choose your Ranthambore tour package
