About Hampi

Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of medieval India's largest and wealthiest kingdoms, until it was sacked in the 16th century. What remains is a UNESCO World Heritage site spread across a surreal landscape of giant granite boulders on the Tungabhadra river: temples, a stone chariot, royal enclosures and bazaars, many still standing, others reduced to foundations.

  • Virupaksha Temple

A still-active temple at the heart of Hampi, one of the few structures never abandoned.

  • Vittala Temple and the Stone Chariot

Hampi's most photographed monument, an intricately carved stone chariot.

  • Hampi Bazaar

The ruined royal market street, running up to the Virupaksha Temple.

  • The boulder landscape

The giant granite formations that give Hampi its distinctive, almost otherworldly setting.

How many days, and best time to visit

Hampi's ruins are spread across a wide area, and two full days lets you cover both the sacred centre near Virupaksha Temple and the royal centre further south without rushing. October to February is the comfortable season; by March it is already getting hot for a full day of walking among the ruins.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Hampi?

Two full days is comfortable, one for the sacred centre near Virupaksha Temple, one for the royal centre and the boulder landscape further out.

How do you get around the Hampi ruins?

Bicycle or moped hire is common and practical given the spread of the site; a guide with a vehicle covers more ground in less time.

What is the best time to visit Hampi?

October to February, before the heat builds; by March, walking among the boulders in the middle of the day gets uncomfortably hot.

Is Hampi suitable for a day trip?

It is possible but rushed; the ruins are spread out enough that a single day covers only a fraction of what is worth seeing.
