Spiti Valley: the cold-desert Himalaya of Himachal Pradesh
Spiti Valley is a high-altitude cold desert in Himachal Pradesh, reached either via the longer Shimla-Kinnaur road or, in summer, the more direct Manali-Kunzum La route. Its monasteries, including the well-known Key (or Ki) Monastery above Kaza, and villages such as Kibber and Langza sit at genuine altitude, so the trip is planned around acclimatisation much as a Ladakh trip is, and the Kunzum La route is closed by snow for much of the year.

Highlights
- Chandratal Lake, the 'moon lake', sits within reach as a highlight in its own right.
- The Shimla-Kinnaur road is the longer but more reliable approach, gaining altitude gradually and open for more of the year.
- Spiti Valley is a high-altitude cold desert in Himachal Pradesh, bare and dramatic in the way Ladakh is, with whitewashed monasteries perched above the Spiti River and much of the valley sitting well above 3,000 metres.
- The Manali-Kunzum La route is shorter and more dramatic but is a high pass, open in summer only and closed by snow the rest of the year.

Who it suits
- Travellers who want Ladakh's high-altitude cold-desert scenery with fewer crowds, and who are comfortable with a genuine expedition-style trip: long drives, basic accommodation in the remoter villages, and a route that depends on which pass is open when you travel.
- It suits photographers, monastery visitors and anyone drawn to remote high-altitude landscapes, and is a natural extension for travellers who have already done Ladakh and want the quieter, less-visited version of the same kind of terrain.
Honest cautions
- The Manali-Kunzum La route is a high pass, open in summer only and closed by snow for much of the year; the Shimla-Kinnaur road is open for longer but is the longer drive of the two.

Frequently asked questions
Is Spiti Valley similar to Ladakh?
Yes, in landscape — both are high-altitude cold deserts with Buddhist monasteries — but Spiti sits in Himachal Pradesh rather than the Union Territory of Ladakh, is reached by different roads, and generally sees fewer visitors.
Which route into Spiti should I take?
The Shimla-Kinnaur road is the more reliable, longer approach with a gentler altitude gain; the Manali-Kunzum La route is shorter and more dramatic but is a high pass open in summer only. We choose the route based on your season and days available.
Do I need permits for Spiti Valley?
Requirements vary by nationality and by exactly where the route goes, particularly near the Tibet border; we confirm current rules for your trip and handle any paperwork needed.
What is Key Monastery?
One of Spiti's best-known monasteries, perched on a hilltop above the town of Kaza, and a highlight of most itineraries into the valley.
How many days do I need for Spiti Valley?
Five to six days is typical for a loop covering Kaza, Key Monastery, Kibber and Langza, more if you combine it with Ladakh or extend to Chandratal Lake, subject to which routes are open.
