What time do Hampi's monuments open?
The Archaeological Survey of India opens the protected monuments from sunrise to sunset. An early start pays off: the light is softer, the stone is cooler, and Matanga Hill, the highest point at Hampi, is the classic sunrise climb over the ruins and the river, up rocky paths and old steps. The Virupaksha temple keeps its own hours as a working temple, so your guide plans when to go in.
Should we stay in Hampi or Hosapete?
Hampi puts you closest to the monuments, which is why Karnataka Tourism says many travellers prefer to stay there; the area has guesthouses and homestays as well as hotels and resorts. Hosapete, about 13 km away, has the railway station and more local transport. The Hampi ruins tour's vehicle can start from either, and your specialist adds the hotel you choose to your written quote.
When is Hampi Utsav?
Karnataka Tourism says the festival is usually held between November and January, with music, dance shows and traditional processions staged against the ruins; its dates change from year to year. It is a lively time to visit and falls in the cool season, so plan ahead and tell your specialist, who can arrange your guided day around the festival's busiest hours.
Can we cross the river to Anegundi?
Yes. Anegundi, on the far bank of the Tungabhadra, is a heritage village that Karnataka Tourism describes as older than Hampi and tied to stories of the Ramayana; the rocky country around it is identified with Kishkindha, the monkey kingdom of the epic. The Hampi ruins tour ends with a short boat or coracle crossing there, a quiet close to a day among the ruins. Coracle hire is paid separately and is not part of the package.
What should we wear for the Virupaksha temple?
Modest clothes and soft voices, as at any working temple. The Archaeological Survey of India lists the Virupaksha temple, also called Pampapati, as still in worship and the largest standing temple at Hampi; its gateway tower, which Karnataka Tourism puts at nearly 50 m, was built under Krishnadeva Raya. Shoes come off at temple entrances, so wear a pair that slips on and off easily but also grips uneven stone for the rest of the day.
Can we combine Hampi with Mysore or Goa?
Yes, as one tailor-made route. Hampi is about 340 km from Bengaluru, and Mysuru about 140 km south-west of it, so Bengaluru links our Hampi ruins tour with our Mysore Palace tour. Goa's beaches can follow instead. Pattadakal, a World Heritage Site since 1987, can be added to a longer route through northern Karnataka. Your specialist sets out the route, the drives and the hotels in one written quote.
About Hampi Tour Packages
Our Hampi tour package is a private day among the ruins for travellers who want the Vijayanagara capital explained on the ground: a guide across the Sacred and Royal Centres, from the working Virupaksha temple to the Vittala temple's stone chariot, a vehicle around the wide site, help with bicycles or auto-rickshaws, and a route timed around the heat. It is quoted in writing before you pay.

Why go to Hampi
Hampi, on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra in Karnataka, was the seat of the Vijayanagara empire. Its monuments, built between 1336 and 1570, spread over nearly 26 sq km of granite boulder country, and the city was among the richest of its age until the empire's defeat at Talikota in 1565, after which it was looted and abandoned. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1986. The Virupaksha temple is still in worship; the stone chariot in the Vittala temple complex, a shrine to Garuda, is pictured on India's fifty-rupee note; and the Royal Centre keeps the Lotus Mahal and the elephant stables. More in our Hampi travel guide.
How many days to give Hampi
One full day with a guide covers the essentials, and that is how the Hampi ruins tour runs: the Sacred Centre around the Virupaksha temple, the Vittala temple, the Royal Centre and, to finish, a crossing to Anegundi on the far bank. Two days are better. Give the first to the Sacred Centre and the Vittala temple, and the second to the Royal Centre and a slower afternoon at Anegundi, with Matanga Hill at sunrise. Add travel time too: Bengaluru is about 340 km away, six to seven hours by road.
When to go
Karnataka Tourism recommends October to February, when temperatures run between about 15 and 30°C. By April and May the exposed rock and the shadeless ruins become very hot, which is why the tour plans its route around the heat of the day. IMD's normal dates for Gangawati, the town closest to Hampi in its monsoon tables, put the rains' arrival around 6 June and their withdrawal around 15 October. Hampi Utsav, a festival of music, dance and processions staged among the ruins, is usually held between November and January, and Maha Shivaratri draws large crowds to the Virupaksha temple.
How to reach Hampi
The nearest railway station is Hosapete Junction, about 13 km away, and the nearest airport is Jindal Vijaynagar, about 40 km. For international flights, the nearest airport is Bengaluru's Kempegowda International, and from there it is about 340 km by road. Taxis, buses and rental bikes run between Hosapete and Hampi. Once you are there, the tour's private vehicle takes you to and around the site, and your guide arranges two-wheelers or auto-rickshaws for the stretches in between.
What our Hampi tour package includes
Your guide stays with you for the whole day, through both the Sacred and the Royal Centre, and a private car carries you to the site and between its far-flung parts. For the stretches between ruins, the guide can arrange a bicycle, a moped or an auto-rickshaw, and the order of the day is planned to keep you out of the midday sun. Not included: monument entry tickets, whose cost is set out in your quote, the hire of bicycles, mopeds or a coracle, and personal expenses. The package lists no hotel, so if you want a night in Hampi or Hosapete, your specialist adds one to the written quote; a second guided day can be added the same way.
Who our Hampi tour package suits
Travellers who like ruins, temples and landscape, and photographers drawn to the boulders at dawn and dusk. With the vehicle and auto-rickshaws covering the long stretches, the day asks less walking than the size of the site suggests. The Virupaksha temple is a working temple, so dress modestly and keep your voice down there, and expect to walk barefoot at temple entrances: wear shoes that slip off easily but grip uneven stone. For a longer route in Karnataka, add our Mysore Palace tour or see Karnataka tour packages; for the coast, see Goa tour packages.
