Frequently asked questions

What can you do in Bir Billing apart from paragliding?

Walk to Rajgundha, spend a morning at Bir's Tibetan monasteries, visit the 13th-century Shiva temple at Baijnath, or wander the tea estates around Palampur. Fit trekkers with experience of altitude can cross the Thamsar Pass, five to seven days with permits.

How old do you have to be to paraglide at Bir Billing?

At least 12. Himachal Pradesh's Aero Sports Rules do not allow children under 12 years old, or anyone weighing under 30 kg, to fly as passengers. Operators also set their own weight limits, and final eligibility is confirmed on the day, so mention your weight and any health conditions when you book.

What do you need to bring for the flight?

A photo ID, your booking confirmation, closed shoes and warm layers, as Billing is higher and colder than Bir. The rules ban bulky clothes, saris, neckties, long skirts and three-piece suits in the air, and loose scarves or jewellery can catch on the harness.

Can you learn to paraglide at Bir?

Yes. Himachal Tourism runs paragliding training programmes at Bir and Dharamshala, and the Kangra district sends enquiries to its tourism office in Dharamshala and to the sports associations. Our own flight is a tandem with a certified pilot, so it needs no training.

About Bir Billing Tours & Experiences

The main thing to do in Bir Billing is fly: a tandem paragliding flight from the ridge at Billing to the fields of Bir. Other things to do in Bir Billing are the walk to Rajgundha, the Thamsar Pass trek, Bir's Tibetan monasteries and the Baijnath temple. Our paragliding experience covers the flight and the ride up.

Things to do in Bir Billing

Billing, on the ridge, is where the gliders take off; Bir, below, is where they land. The Bir Billing travel guide covers the area in full.

Fly tandem from Billing to Bir

On our Bir Billing paragliding experience the day starts with a hotel pickup in Bir or elsewhere in the Kangra valley and a shared ride up to the take-off ground. Your pilot fits the harness and helmet and talks you through it; after a few running steps you are airborne for fifteen to thirty minutes, as the thermals allow, before touching down in Bir.

Walk to Rajgundha

A trail of 12 to 14 km from Billing, five to six hours on foot, leads to Rajgundha, a village at about 2,700 metres among deodar, pine and meadows by the Uhl river, with a few basic homestays and camps.

Cross the Thamsar Pass

This old Gaddi shepherds' route over the Dhauladhar, at about 4,700 metres, takes five to seven days with the drive. The district rates it moderate to difficult and says it needs forest and wildlife-sanctuary permits and experience of altitude.

Spend a morning at the monasteries

Bir's Tibetan settlement has several Buddhist monasteries and a large stupa. Go quietly, cover shoulders and knees, and ask before photographing inside.

Visit Baijnath and the tea gardens

Baijnath's Shiva temple, built in 1204, stands on the Binwa river near Bir's railway stop; the tea estates of Palampur, home of Kangra tea, are in the same valley.

Choosing between our tours and experiences

At Bir we offer one experience, the tandem flight, and no tour; it suits anyone reasonably fit, within the weight and health limits, who wants a short, spectacular activity without training. For a longer trip, see Himachal Pradesh tours and experiences, things to do in Dharamshala and adventure experiences in Bir Billing.

When to go for these

The state's technical committee sets the flying season by the weather; our flights run mainly from March to June and September to November, and July and August, the district's rainy months, are largely unsuitable. Snow usually closes the way to Rajgundha from December to March, and Thamsar is crossed from mid-June to mid-October.

The rules for your flight

Himachal's Aero Sports Rules, 2022 bar people with heart conditions, epilepsy, lung disorders or asthma, pregnant women, and anyone who has drunk alcohol or taken drugs in the previous eight hours. Nobody flies in bad weather, and flying ends an hour before sunset or at 6 pm, so keep a spare day.
