Is Khajuraho worth visiting?
Yes, if temple architecture or Indian sculpture interests you. UNESCO describes the group as the culmination of northern Indian temple art under the Chandella dynasty, and the carving covers almost every outer surface, from deities and celestial dancers to scenes of teaching, music and household life. The town is out of the way, with few flights and trains, so it rewards a night or two rather than a hurried stop between other places.
When is the Khajuraho Dance Festival?
In February. MP Tourism describes it as a celebration of Indian classical dance by leading performers from across the country, staged with the temples as the backdrop, and it has run for more than five decades. The exact dates change from year to year, so ask the specialist to check them before you fix a February trip and to plan your temple day around the evening performances.
Is Khajuraho too hot to visit in summer?
It is hard going. IMD's figures for Satna, the nearest city it profiles, put the average May maximum at nearly 42°C, and the tour is a day on foot between three groups, with some platforms climbed barefoot. If you must come between April and June, start early, rest through the afternoon and return for the evening show. Between October and March it is far more comfortable.
Can I take photographs at the Khajuraho temples?
Generally yes, outside, and the carved outer walls are what most visitors want to photograph. Ask your guide before photographing inside any shrine that is still in active worship, and follow any signs at the gates. The soft light of early morning and late afternoon shows the depth of the carving best, and it also keeps you out of the midday heat.
Why does a guide make such a difference at Khajuraho?
Because there is so much carving to read. MP Tourism counts about 870 sculptures on the Western Group alone, set in bands from plinth to spire, and without help most visitors see only the few well-known erotic panels. A guide picks out the gods and their stories, the celestial dancers, the scenes of daily life and the differences between the Hindu and Jain temples, which is why the tour is built around one.
What else is there to see near Khajuraho?
Raneh Falls, 21 km away, where the Ken river has cut a canyon about 5 km long and 30 metres deep, and Pandav Falls, on the road to Panna, which drops 30 metres into a pool with caves tied to the Mahabharata. Panna National Park begins about 27 km out. In town, the Adivart museum shows tribal and folk art in traditional houses, and the Jain museum near the bus stand has sculptures of the 24 Tirthankaras.

Why go to Khajuraho
Khajuraho's temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, are rare survivors of northern India's Nagara style at its height. UNESCO counts 23 of them, in western, eastern and southern clusters across about 6 square kilometres, built in sandstone under the Chandella kings; MP Tourism dates most of them to between about 950 and 1050. Each stands on a high, ornate platform, and its tower is flanked by smaller spires, each of which, UNESCO notes, stands for Mount Kailasa. Hindu and Jain temples share the site, carved with gods, dancers, musicians, teachers and lovers; MP Tourism puts the famous erotic sculptures at only about a tenth of the whole. More in our Khajuraho travel guide.
How many days to give Khajuraho
The Khajuraho temples tour is a day: the Western Group first, taken slowly, then the quieter Eastern and Southern Groups. If only the Western Group interests you, a morning or an afternoon will do. Because flights and trains are few, most travellers need at least one night, arriving the evening before or staying on for the sound-and-light show at the Western Group, which runs on most evenings. A second day leaves room for the Ken river's Raneh Falls canyon, 21 km away, or Panna National Park, which begins about 27 km out of town.
When to go
The cool, dry months from October to March suit a day spent on foot. IMD's climate summary for Satna, the nearest city in its series of city profiles, gives January an average maximum of 24°C and minimum of about 9°C, and May an average maximum of nearly 42°C, so a summer visit means early starts and a long rest at midday. About 89 per cent of Satna's rain falls in the south-west monsoon, with August the wettest month, and fog sometimes forms on winter mornings. February brings the Khajuraho Dance Festival, with classical dancers performing against the temples. Region by region: best time to visit India.
How to reach Khajuraho
Khajuraho has a small domestic airport about 2 km from the temples, but flights are few, so check schedules before you build a trip around one. The town's railway station, about 5 km out, also has a limited service. Mahoba, about 78 km away, is the nearest major railhead, and Jhansi, about 175 km away, has trains from Delhi, Mumbai and most large cities; the road from Jhansi passes Orchha, so the two pair naturally. The tour's car covers your day at the temples, and a transfer from Jhansi or Mahoba can go into the same written quote.
What the Khajuraho tour package includes
Everything on the tour is private: a knowledgeable guide across all three temple groups, a vehicle for the day, and help booking your entry tickets in advance. The guide's real job is the carving, explaining what each band of figures shows rather than stopping only at the well-known panels. Not included are the entry tickets themselves, which are confirmed on your quote, the ticket for the evening sound-and-light show if you add it, and personal expenses. A hotel, if you want one, goes into the same written quote, and you can cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before the tour starts.
How your Khajuraho trip is tailored
Tell the specialist your dates and how much time you have, and the day is shaped around them: the Western Group alone in half a day, or all three groups in a full day, with the evening show if you want it. Some of the temples are still in worship, so dress modestly, and wear shoes that slip off easily, as some platforms and steps are climbed barefoot. If you are coming for the Khajuraho Dance Festival, or have a tight schedule between flights, the specialist fits the temple day around it. For a longer route through the state, with Orchha or Panna, see Madhya Pradesh tour packages.
