How cold is a night at Pangong Lake in summer?
Colder than Leh. The lake lies roughly 800 metres higher, and even Leh has had nights close to freezing in June and September in recent years, by the IMD's records. Thin, dry air loses the day's warmth fast after sunset, so bring a down jacket, a hat and gloves, even in July.
Can I see Pangong Lake on a day trip from Leh?
It can be done, but it is a long, high day: five to six hours each way over Chang La for a short time at the shore, and only once your 48 hours in Leh are up. Our tours give Pangong a night instead, arriving from Nubra and leaving the next morning, so you see the lake in the evening and early light as well as by day.
Why do your tours reach Pangong from Nubra and not from Leh?
It saves crossing Khardung La twice. After the night in Nubra, the Ladakh Tour — 8 days and 10 Days Ladakh with Srinagar drive across to Pangong without going back to Leh, arriving for the evening by the shore. The ten-day tour then returns to Leh over Chang La, and the eight-day tour carries on to Tso Moriri, so the route is a loop rather than separate trips out and back.
Does Pangong Lake freeze in winter?
Yes. Although its water is brackish, the Leh district says the lake freezes over completely in winter. Our Pangong tours are summer trips, made when the lake is open water and its colour shifts through the day; a winter visit to the frozen lake is not part of them.
What wildlife might I see, and how should I behave around it?
In summer the lake is a breeding ground for birds, and the Leh district names bar-headed geese, Brahminy ducks, black-necked cranes and gulls among those commonly seen. The area is a notified wildlife sanctuary. The Leh district's guide for visitors asks you not to feed or approach wildlife, not to drive off the road, not to leave kitchen waste exposed at camps, and not to geotag photos of wildlife, which helps poachers.
How much of Pangong Lake is in India, and how far along it can I go?
About a third of its 134 km, at the western end, around Lukung and the villages along the shore. How far along it you may go depends on your passport: foreign nationals may go only where their protected-area permit's route allows, while the routes open to Indian visitors are listed on the Leh permit portal. We plan the night by the lake within what your permit allows.
About Pangong Lake Tour Packages
A night on the shore of Pangong Tso, the long, brackish lake at about 4,300 metres, is what our private Pangong Lake trips are built around, rather than a rushed day trip from Leh. The eight-day Ladakh tour arrives from Nubra and goes on to Tso Moriri; the ten-day tour with Srinagar returns to Leh over Chang La. Each is tailor-made, with a written quote before you pay.

Why go to Pangong Lake
Pangong Tso is a brackish lake about 134 km long and nowhere more than about 5 km wide, lying east of Leh at about 4,300 metres; the Leh district counts it among the highest brackish lakes in the world. Its water changes colour through the day, from blue to grey-green, and in summer it is a breeding ground for birds. The lake area is a notified wildlife sanctuary, which is one reason rooms by the shore are few. The evening and the early morning, when day-trippers from Leh have gone or not yet arrived, are the reason to sleep here. See also our Pangong Lake travel guide.
How many days to give Pangong Lake
One night, which is what each tour listed here gives it, and more than a day trip from Leh allows. Each arrives at the lake from the Nubra Valley, not from Leh, in time for the evening by the shore. On the Ladakh Tour — 8 days the lake is the fourth night, and the next day continues to Tso Moriri. On 10 Days Ladakh with Srinagar it is the seventh night, and the next day returns to Leh, with a buffer for the weather. A second night by the lake can be planned into a tailor-made trip.
When to go
Pangong is a summer trip: by winter the lake is frozen. June to September suits it best, and summer is also when the lake's birds breed. It is the busy season too, and with few rooms by the shore, Ladakh's tourism department asks visitors not to plan a night at Pangong without a booking made in advance. However warm Leh feels in July, the lake night is cold; the questions below explain why. Our guide to Ladakh's seasons sets out the months.
How to reach Pangong Lake
From Leh, the road runs east by Karu, over Chang La and down through Durbuk and Tangtse to Lukung at the lake's western end: about 140 to 160 km, or five to six hours' driving, depending on where you stay. Chang La, over 5,000 metres, is one of the high places Ladakh's tourism department tells visitors to keep away from in their first 48 hours in Leh. Our tours arrive from Nubra instead; only the ten-day tour uses this road, to return to Leh. Leh's airport is the nearest.
What our Pangong Lake tour packages include
For the night at the lake, the Ladakh Tour — 8 days gives you a camp or hotel confirmed at enquiry (its day plan names a lakeside camp), along with daily breakfast, its own 4x4 with a driver, and the Pangong permit. 10 Days Ladakh with Srinagar lists a vehicle (car or 4x4) with a driver and the Nubra and Pangong permits, but not the lakeside stay, so ask for that to be named in your quote. Lunches, dinners, flights and travel insurance are extra; the eight-day tour strongly recommends, but does not include, an oxygen cylinder or medical evacuation insurance.
How to choose your Pangong Lake tour package
The difference is what comes after the lake. The Ladakh Tour — 8 days goes on from the lake to Tso Moriri, another high lake, before returning to Leh: choose it if you are fit, patient with altitude and want the remote Changthang plateau too. On 10 Days Ladakh with Srinagar, Pangong is the last night out before Leh: choose it to pair the lake with Kashmir. For two nights by the lake, or Pangong without Nubra, ask for a tailor-made version of the Leh, Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake circuit. More on Ladakh tour packages.
