Frequently asked questions

What is a night on a Dal Lake houseboat like?

Srinagar's houseboats are moored along Dal and Nigeen lakes, and Nigeen is the quieter of the two waters. Standards vary widely, from simple to very comfortable, so tell us what you expect and we will match the boat to it. On the Kashmir Tour — 6 days, your Srinagar nights are in a hotel or a houseboat, as confirmed at enquiry; many travellers split them, one night on the water and one on shore.

When is Srinagar's Tulip Garden open?

For a few weeks in spring, while the tulips bloom. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden covers about 30 hectares on seven terraces in the foothills of the Zabarwan range, looking over Dal Lake, with hyacinths, daffodils and ranunculus planted among the tulips. Its opening follows the bloom, usually in the second half of March, and earlier in a warm spring. If tulips are the reason for your trip, keep your dates flexible.

Which Mughal gardens should I see?

Shalimar Bagh, laid out by the emperor Jahangir for Nur Jahan in 1619, is the largest. Nishat Bagh, built by Asif Khan in 1633, falls to the lake in twelve terraces. Chashma Shahi, from 1632 and the smallest, is built around a spring, with the terraces of Pari Mahal a five-minute drive above it. The Kashmir Tour — 6 days visits the gardens with a local guide, and the Floriculture Department sells tickets for its paid gardens online.

Can I reach Srinagar by train?

Yes. The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla line, which crosses the Chenab bridge, now links Srinagar railway station with the rest of the network. From Jammu Tawi the Vande Bharat takes about five hours, with a stop at Katra; from Delhi, check IRCTC for a connection to Jammu or Katra. The train is slower than flying, but the line, with 36 tunnels and the Chenab bridge 359 metres above the river, is worth riding for its engineering.

Does Dal Lake freeze in winter?

Sometimes, in a hard winter. The Srinagar district administration notes that temperatures sometimes fall to minus 11°C, freezing the lake. An ordinary January is milder: the city's IMD normals for 1991–2020 are about 7°C by day and minus 2°C at night. A winter visit means snow on the surrounding hills, short days and some gardens closed until spring, so pack for the cold and ask us about heated rooms.

Does travel advice for Kashmir cover Srinagar?

Yes. Some governments, the UK's among them, advise against travel to Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar included, and travelling against that advice can invalidate your insurance. Other governments publish their own advice, so read yours, and your policy, before you book. Our Kashmir travel guide sets out the advisory picture in more detail, and we confirm the current situation for your dates.

Where else in Srinagar is worth a visit?

Hari Parbat fort, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, stands on a hill west of Dal Lake and looks down on the Makhdoom Sahib shrine, which a ropeway also serves. In the old city, Badamwari is known for its almond blossom, and the Hazratbal shrine lies north-east of Nigeen Lake. Our Srinagar travel guide adds the wooden Jamia Masjid and the hilltop Shankaracharya Temple.

Why go to Srinagar

Srinagar is a city built around water. Dal Lake covers about 18 square kilometres, split by causeways into basins, with floating gardens, the island of Char Chinari and long rows of houseboats along its shores. Nigeen Lake, joined to it by a narrow channel, is deeper and quieter. Above the eastern shore, against the Zabarwan hills, the Mughal emperors and their nobles laid out terraced gardens fed by springs; Srinagar's three Mughal gardens, Shalimar, Nishat and Chashma Shahi, line that shore. For the valleys around Srinagar, see our Kashmir tour packages; for the city in depth, the Srinagar travel guide.

How many days to give Srinagar

Two full days covers the lake, the gardens and the old city at an easy pace, and our tours allow about that. The Kashmir Tour — 6 days opens with two nights here, for Dal Lake and the Mughal gardens, and comes back for a final night after Pahalgam and Gulmarg. 10 Days Ladakh with Srinagar also starts with two nights in the city; its third night is in Srinagar or already in Leh, depending on whether the season's route to Ladakh is the road or a flight.

When to go

The city changes with its gardens. Spring brings the tulips (see the questions below), and Chashma Shahi, open from March to November, is at its fullest in May and June. In July and August, the warmest weeks, lotus flowers bloom on the floating gardens of Dal Lake. In autumn the chinar trees in the gardens turn colour, and October is Srinagar's driest month, with about 22 mm of rain on average. Winter is cold and quiet. How to reach Srinagar

Flights land at Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR) at Humhama, about 14 km from the city centre; the drive to Dal Lake takes 25 to 35 minutes, depending on traffic. Daily direct flights come from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata. Some airlines also fly between Srinagar and Leh, which is how 10 Days Ladakh with Srinagar reaches Ladakh when it goes by air. Srinagar railway station is on the new line from Jammu (see the questions below). Flights are not included in our Srinagar packages, so book them once your written quote is agreed.

What our Srinagar tour packages include

In Srinagar, every package here includes a shikara ride on Dal Lake, a local guide and a private car with a driver. The Kashmir Tour — 6 days books your Srinagar nights in a hotel or a houseboat, as confirmed at enquiry, with daily breakfast, and later adds stage 1 of the Gulmarg gondola. 10 Days Ladakh with Srinagar carries on with a car or 4x4, a local guide in Leh and the permits its Ladakh route needs; garden and monastery entry fees are extra on that tour. Flights, lunches and dinners, and travel insurance are not included.

How to choose your Srinagar tour package

Choose the Kashmir Tour — 6 days if Srinagar is your base for the mountains: it suits families, couples and photographers who want Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonmarg without a rushed loop, with the city at the start and the end. Choose 10 Days Ladakh with Srinagar for the lakes and then Ladakh's high desert, if you accept the rest days that Leh's altitude demands; the road runs only part of the year, otherwise you fly. A tailor-made trip suits better for Srinagar at length: the tulip weeks, a night on a houseboat and one ashore, or a winter stay.
