Frequently asked questions

How do I book darshan at Tirumala?

Only through TTD's official website, ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in, or its official app. TTD repeatedly warns devotees about fake websites selling darshan and seva tickets, and tells them never to pay middlemen. Sarva Darshan, the general queue through the Vaikuntam Queue Complex, is free. Special Entry Darshan has been bookable in advance online since 2014. We plan your trip around the darshan you secure.

Is there a dress code for darshan at Tirumala?

Yes. TTD introduced a traditional dress code in 2013 for pilgrims at Arjitha Sevas and has since extended it to VIP break darshan and the paid darshans. Men wear a dhoti or pyjama with an upper cloth; women wear a saree or half-saree with blouse, or a churidar with pyjama and upper cloth. TTD also asks pilgrims not to wear footwear, caps or hats in the temple, or flowers at Tirumala.

Can I walk up to Tirumala?

Yes. Two stone footpaths climb the hills: the older Alipiri path, the one most pilgrims use, which TTD puts at about three hours, and the shorter Srivari Mettu path, about an hour and a half. Walkers receive tokens at biometric counters on the way for free darshan, and luggage left at Alipiri or in Tirupati is carried up free. After leopard attacks, TTD has at times limited the hours for families with young children, so check the current rules first.

How long is the drive from Tirupati up to Tirumala?

The road up is about 18 km of hairpin bends. AP Tourism says the time allowed is 28 minutes up and 40 minutes down, with a fine for arriving sooner. The ghat roads are normally open from 3 am to midnight, and round the clock on special occasions. At the Alipiri checkpoint vehicles are searched: alcohol, tobacco and meat are not allowed on the hill.

When is Tirumala most crowded?

During the Brahmotsavam, TTD's most important festival: nine days whose high point is the Garuda Seva on the fifth night. It usually falls in September or October, and in some years TTD holds two, on dates it announces in advance. Vaikuntha Ekadasi, in December or January, brings special darshan days with their own token rules. On peak days TTD keeps Sarva Darshan open about 20 hours, against about 18 normally.

Do I have to offer my hair at Tirupati?

No. Tonsure is a vow many pilgrims choose, never a condition of darshan. It is free at all of TTD's Kalyanakattas, the tonsure halls; the main one works round the clock in four shifts from 3 am, and pilgrims are given a computer-generated token. If you take part, it is usually done before darshan, so allow extra time that morning.

Is there a separate darshan for senior citizens?

Yes. Pilgrims who have completed 65 can book it in advance on TTD's official website with Aadhaar, accompanied only by a spouse; TTD lists a quota of 1,000 a day, at 3 pm from Monday to Saturday. Similar slots exist for differently abled pilgrims and listed medical cases, with certificates. Because Aadhaar is required, overseas visitors should check eligibility before planning around it.

Why go to Tirupati

Tirupati, in Andhra Pradesh, is the town at the foot of the Tirumala hills. On Venkatadri, one of the seven peaks of the Seshachalam range and about 850 metres up, stands the Sri Venkateswara Temple, run by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), where pilgrims come for darshan of Lord Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu; its inscriptions go back to the 9th century. Many pilgrims offer their hair before darshan, and most leave with the temple's laddu prasadam. On the hill are the Swami Pushkarini tank, the Sri Bhu Varaha Swamy temple, the Akasa Ganga waterfall, the Silathoranam rock arch and a temple museum. Down in the town are the Govindaraja Swamy Temple and, at Tiruchanur, the Padmavathi Ammavari Temple.

How many days to give Tirupati

That depends on your darshan. The Tirupati darshan tour has no fixed itinerary: its length follows the darshan type and time slot you secure through TTD, and whether you walk up the hill. The 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour gives Tirupati one night: you arrive on day 1, and day 2 is Tirumala darshan before the long drive south to Madurai. If Tirumala is the main purpose of your trip, two nights make it calmer, with room for the footpath, Tiruchanur or a delayed queue.

When to go

Tirumala receives pilgrims all year, and crowds matter more than weather. The nine-day Brahmotsavam usually falls in September or October, and the days around Vaikuntha Ekadasi, in December or January, are among the busiest; weekends and school holidays are busier than weekdays. December to February is the most comfortable time; April to June is hot in Tirupati town. The northeast monsoon's rain peaks in October and November, and AP Tourism notes that the road up the hill is prone to landslides in heavy rain. How to reach Tirupati

Tirupati Airport, at Renigunta about 14 km from the town, has domestic flights. Flying in from abroad, you can land at Chennai, about three hours away by road, or Bengaluru, about five, the airports TTD names; Chennai's airport is some 145 km from Tirupati. Tirupati's railway station is about 26 km below the temple, and TTD also points rail travellers to Renigunta. From the town, a ghat road of about 18 km climbs to Tirumala and a separate one brings traffic down; walkers take the stone footpaths from Alipiri or Srivari Mettu instead.

What our Tirupati tour packages include

The Tirupati darshan tour lists no fixed inclusions: it is built around your dates and the darshan option you choose, planned through TTD's own booking system. The 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour includes a private car and driver throughout, and assistance with darshan queues and special-entry tickets where applicable. The Tirumala special darshan ticket fees themselves go to TTD and are not included, and nor are flights, lunches and dinners, the boat to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial or travel insurance. Hotels and breakfast are not listed among its inclusions, so check them in your written quote.

How to choose your Tirupati tour package

If Tirumala is the whole purpose, choose the Tirupati darshan tour: it can be shaped around the footpath, a senior citizens' darshan or a visit to Tiruchanur. Choose the 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour if you are a pilgrim who wants Tirupati, Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari in one trip without the pace of a group bus tour; with one night here, it suits those whose darshan falls on day 2.
