Travel guide19 tour packages

Uttar Pradesh holds India's single most-visited monument, the Taj Mahal at Agra, and its most sacred city, Varanasi, on the Ganges. Between them sit Ayodhya's Ram Mandir, the Krishna towns of Mathura and Vrindavan, the Sangam at Prayagraj and the Nawabi city of Lucknow. October to March is the season for all of it.

About Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state and, for most first-time visitors, its most-travelled: the Taj Mahal at Agra draws more foreign visitors than almost anywhere else in the country, and Varanasi is the city most Hindus name as India's spiritual heart. The state sits along the Ganges plain, and its main destinations for a first trip cluster in two groups: Agra as the second point of the Golden Triangle, and the Ganga belt running from Mathura and Vrindavan through Prayagraj to Varanasi and Ayodhya, with Lucknow's Nawabi heritage a little to the north.

  • Agra

The Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri — the second point of the Golden Triangle.

  • Varanasi

India's holiest city, the Ganga Aarti and the sunrise boat ride on the ghats.

  • Mathura-Vrindavan

The Krishna pilgrimage towns of the Braj region, most intense at Holi and Janmashtami.

  • Ayodhya

The Ram Mandir and the evening Saryu aarti, and one of India's fastest-growing pilgrimage circuits.

  • Prayagraj

The Triveni Sangam, confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Sarasvati, and host of the Kumbh Mela.

  • Lucknow

Nawabi-era monuments, Awadhi cuisine and one of North India's most refined food cities.

Best time to visit Uttar Pradesh

October to March is the season across the state: cool, clear mornings for a dawn Taj and a sunrise boat ride on the Ganges. December and January bring occasional morning fog around Agra and the Ganga plain. April to June is punishingly hot, and the July-to-September monsoon is humid, though it keeps the countryside green.

How many days do you need

Agra alone is one night; pairing it with Varanasi is a natural week-long North India trip. Delhi, Agra and Varanasi together run comfortably at around eight days. Add Ayodhya to a Varanasi trip and you have a spiritual circuit that many travellers now build a dedicated few days around, given how close the two cities sit.
