Is Kashmir safe to visit, and what does travel advice say?
Read your own government's travel advice first: some governments, the UK's among them, advise against travel to Jammu and Kashmir, including Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg, and travelling against that advice can invalidate travel insurance. Check the current advice and your policy before booking. Some sites close from time to time, so we confirm what is open for your dates, and our support runs 24/7 during the trip.
Pahalgam, Gulmarg or Sonmarg: which should we choose?
Gulmarg for the gondola, and for snow and skiing in winter. Pahalgam for a slower stay by the Lidder river, with walks or pony rides beyond the town. Sonmarg for the Thajiwas glacier, usually as a day out from Srinagar. The Kashmir Tour — 6 days takes in each of them: a night in Pahalgam, a night in Gulmarg and a day in Sonmarg. Our Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg guides describe each place.
Should I book the Gulmarg gondola in advance?
Yes. The gondola is run by the Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation, which sells tickets online through its official website and asks visitors to book there rather than through touts. It runs in two stages: the first to Kongdori, the second higher up the mountain, which depends on the weather. The six-day tour includes stage 1; stage 2 is a separate ticket. On the Kashmir honeymoon, gondola tickets are not included.
When is there snow in Kashmir?
From December to February. IMD's 1991–2020 averages for January give Gulmarg about 1°C by day and minus 8°C at night, and Pahalgam about 5°C and minus 6°C. Gulmarg then becomes a ski resort, and the six-day tour names winter as the best time for Gulmarg in particular. Srinagar and the lakes are quiet and cold, and the gondola ride needs your warmest layers.
Is Sonmarg reachable in winter now?
Yes. Sonmarg used to be cut off by snow and avalanches each winter, but the Sonamarg tunnel, opened in January 2025, gives the road from Srinagar all-weather connectivity. The Zojila pass beyond it, on the road to Ladakh, still closes for the winter. Expect snow at Thajiwas rather than meadows, and check conditions the day before. Sonmarg is the day trip on our six-day tour.
What happens in Kashmir during the Amarnath Yatra?
The pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave runs through July and August, on dates fixed each year by the shrine board. Pilgrims set out from Pahalgam and from Baltal, 15 km from Sonmarg, so both places are busy then, and the Anantnag district administration advises booking well in advance for those weeks. If your dates overlap with the yatra, tell us early, so that rooms in Pahalgam can be held.
When should we plan a Kashmir honeymoon?
Between April and October, the season our Kashmir honeymoon is planned for: a houseboat on Dal Lake, shikara rides and the Mughal gardens, then Gulmarg or Pahalgam for the mountains. That runs opposite to Rajasthan and Kerala, where the honeymoon season is winter. Houseboat and hotel costs are listed separately, so you choose the standard, and every trip is quoted in writing before you pay anything.
About Kashmir Tour Packages
Our private Kashmir trips are for travellers who want Srinagar's lakes and gardens and the mountain valleys beyond them. We run a six-day tour through Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg with a day in Sonmarg, a Kashmir honeymoon built around Dal Lake, and Srinagar with Ladakh. Each is planned privately around your dates, budget and group and quoted in writing first. Please check your government's travel advice before booking.

Why go to Kashmir
The Kashmir Valley, in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, is a wide Himalayan valley with Srinagar, the summer capital, on Dal Lake at its centre. Most trips pair the city with one or two side valleys. Gulmarg, whose name means "meadow of flowers", has a two-stage gondola and, in winter, ski slopes. Pahalgam sits on the Lidder river with the Aru valley beyond, on the pilgrimage route to the Amarnath cave. Sonmarg, the "meadow of gold" on the Sindh river, leads to the Thajiwas glacier and the road to Ladakh. For the city's houseboats and Mughal gardens, see our Srinagar tour packages and the Kashmir travel guide.
How many days to give Kashmir
Five or six nights covers Srinagar and two valleys at an unhurried pace. The Kashmir Tour — 6 days spends two nights in Srinagar, one in Pahalgam, one in Gulmarg and a last night back in Srinagar, with Sonmarg as a day trip. A Kashmir honeymoon typically takes five to seven days, with a Gulmarg or Pahalgam extension of your choice. 10 Days Ladakh with Srinagar gives Kashmir its first two or three nights before moving on to Leh. In winter, keep a spare day in hand: heavy snow can close roads for a short time.
When to go
April to June and September to November suit most trips, as the six-day tour's notes say; December to February is the time for snow. March is the wettest month in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam alike, so the tulip season comes with showers. In July, IMD's long-term averages put daytime highs at about 30°C in Srinagar, 25°C in Pahalgam and 21°C in Gulmarg. July and August are also the weeks of the Amarnath Yatra, when pilgrims set out from Pahalgam and from Baltal near Sonmarg. Each season is covered in more detail in the best time to visit Kashmir.
How to reach Kashmir
The quickest way in is a flight to Srinagar's Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR), which has daily direct flights from Delhi and other cities. Since 2025 Srinagar has also been joined to the national rail network, with Vande Bharat trains from Katra. By road, NH-44 from Jammu uses the 8.5 km Banihal–Qazigund tunnel, open all year, though snow and landslides can affect the highway from November to March. From Srinagar, Gulmarg is about 55 to 60 km, an hour and a half by car; Sonmarg is 87 km, under three hours; Pahalgam is 96 km from the airport.
What our Kashmir tour packages include
Every package here includes a private vehicle and a shikara ride on Dal Lake; the rest varies by package. The six-day tour has a driver throughout, stage 1 of the Gulmarg gondola, a local guide in Srinagar, hotel or houseboat stays as confirmed at enquiry, and breakfast daily; gondola stage 2 and Pahalgam pony rides are extra. The honeymoon adds a private guide and garden visits; its houseboat, hotel and gondola costs are separate. The ten-day tour has a driver too, local guides in Srinagar and Leh, and the permits its Ladakh route needs. Comparing Kashmir holiday packages? Check the gondola and houseboat lines first.
How to choose your Kashmir tour package
For a first visit as a family or a couple, or for Gulmarg's snow in winter, start with the Kashmir Tour — 6 days: it suits travellers, photographers included, who want the valleys without a rushed loop. Couples planning a honeymoon in spring, summer or autumn should look at the Kashmir honeymoon, with houseboats and hotels chosen to their standard. For Kashmir's lakes and Ladakh's high desert in one journey, with the rest days Leh's altitude needs, take 10 Days Ladakh with Srinagar. A slower week with quieter meadows such as Yusmarg or Doodhpathri is planned as a tailor-made trip.
