Shimla Travel Guide

Travel guideHimachal Pradesh

Shimla, the former British summer capital of India, is Himachal Pradesh's easiest hill station, with a walkable Mall Road and the UNESCO-listed toy train from Kalka. Two to three days is enough, best April to June or September to November.

About Shimla

Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, was the summer capital of British India, and its colonial architecture, church, and pedestrianised Mall Road still carry that legacy. It is the gentlest introduction to the Himalayan hill stations: no acclimatisation needed, good road and rail links from Delhi and Chandigarh, and an easy pace of walking, shopping and views rather than serious trekking.

  • The Mall Road and Ridge

Shimla's pedestrianised heart, with colonial buildings, cafes and views over the valley.

  • Kalka-Shimla toy train

A UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge railway climbing from the plains to Shimla.

  • Jakhoo Temple

A hilltop Hanuman temple with views over the town.

Best time to visit, and how many days

April to June is the classic summer escape; September to November is quieter and equally scenic. Winter brings snow, popular in its own right for a shorter, colder visit. Two to three days is enough for the Mall Road, the Ridge and a day trip into the surrounding hills.
