Kanyakumari travel guide

Frequently asked questions

Where can I watch the sunrise and sunset in Kanyakumari?

Sunrise is watched from the seafront at the tip, near the Kumari Amman temple, as the sun comes up over the sea. Sunset is watched along the shore, and the best spot shifts with the season, so ask your driver on the day. On full-moon evenings, Tamil Nadu Tourism notes, you can see the sun set and the moon rise at the same time. Cloud can hide either, so a two-night stay gives you a second chance.

How does the ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial work?

The boats are run by Poompuhar Shipping Corporation, a Tamil Nadu government company. Tickets are sold for half-hour slots from 8 am, the last in mid-afternoon, and can be booked online; carry a government photo ID that matches the booking and arrive 30 minutes before your slot. The memorial is open from 8 am to 4 pm. Boats stop in strong wind, heavy rain or storm warnings, and the ride is not included in our packages.

Can I walk between the Vivekananda Rock and the Thiruvalluvar statue?

Yes. A glass bridge, 77 metres long and 10 metres wide, has joined the two rocks since 30 December 2024, so one boat trip covers the memorial, the bridge and the statue. The district administration gives its hours as 8 am to 4 pm, the same as the memorial's. You can only reach it by boat, so when the ferry stops for the weather, the bridge is out of reach too.

What is the Gandhi Mandapam?

A memorial on the seafront, completed in 1956, where an urn of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes was kept for people to pay their respects before the ashes were immersed in the sea at Kanyakumari in 1948. Its central tower is 79 feet high, a figure that stands for his age. On 2 October, his birthday, the midday sun shines through an opening in the roof onto the pedestal where the urn was kept.

When can I visit the Kumari Amman temple?

The district administration gives its hours as 4.30 am to 12.30 pm and 4 to 8.30 pm; they change on festival days. The temple, on the shore at the tip, is dedicated to the goddess Kanyakumari, who in local tradition stood here as a virgin and killed the demon Banasura on Vijaya Dashami, the last day of Navratri. Leave your shoes outside, dress modestly, and follow the notices at the gate.

Can I end the trip on a Kerala beach instead?

Yes. Kanyakumari is under 100 km from Thiruvananthapuram, so a tailor-made trip can add a night or two at Kovalam or Varkala on Kerala's coast before your flight home, or carry on north to the backwaters. A specialist puts the whole route, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, into one written quote. See Kerala tour packages.

Why go to Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari is the southern tip of mainland India, where, in Tamil Nadu Tourism's words, the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean converge. The town takes its name from its goddess, Kanyakumari, whose temple stands on the shore. About 500 metres out, two rocks carry the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, built where Swami Vivekananda meditated in December 1892 and opened in 1970, and the 133-foot statue of the Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar; since December 2024 a glass bridge has joined them. On the seafront, the Gandhi Mandapam marks where an urn of Gandhi's ashes was kept before their immersion here in 1948. More in our Kanyakumari travel guide.

How many days to give Kanyakumari

The South India Temple Trail — 10 days gives Kanyakumari its last two nights: you arrive from Rameswaram on day 8, day 9 is free, and you leave on day 10. Use the free day for the boat to the rock memorial, which runs in time slots from 8 am; slots can sell out, so book ahead. The 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour gives it one night, arriving from Rameswaram on day 5 and leaving on day 6: time for a sunset and a sunrise, and the boat only if the sea and the slots allow. If the memorial matters to you, allow two nights.

When to go

Kanyakumari is the wettest stop in the deep south, with heavy rain in both monsoons: in the district's normal year, about 495 mm falls from June to September and 533 mm from October to December, while January and February are almost dry. It escapes the inland heat: in the state's 2021–23 records, average daily highs stayed around 30–34°C all year, though the air is humid. Tamil Nadu Tourism suggests November to March. In any month the ferry stops for strong wind, heavy rain or storm warnings, so a spare morning helps.

How to reach Kanyakumari

The packages listed here arrive by road from Rameswaram and finish at Kanyakumari, so the practical question is the way home. The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International, in Kerala, under 100 km away; Madurai's airport is about 240 km. Kanyakumari has its own railway station, about 1.3 km from the Vivekananda Rock Memorial's boats, and Nagercoil Junction is about 17 km away. Buses run from Thiruvananthapuram, Madurai and Chennai.

What our Kanyakumari tour packages include

With every package listed here you have a private car and driver throughout, from Rameswaram to your last morning at the tip. The South India Temple Trail adds a local guide at the major temple sites, hotel stays confirmed at enquiry and daily breakfast, and the six-day pilgrimage lists assistance with darshan queues and special-entry tickets where applicable. The boat to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial is not included in our packages: you buy it from the state-run ferry operator, and our team can tell you how. Lunches, dinners and travel insurance are extra.

How to choose your Kanyakumari tour package

The packages listed here reach Kanyakumari after Madurai and Rameswaram, so choose by how you want the trip to end. The South India Temple Trail — 10 days suits travellers who want the temples of the whole state and an unhurried finish: two nights and a free day at the tip. The 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour suits pilgrims who want Tirumala, Madurai, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari in one trip at a private car's pace, with one night here. To spend longer by the sea, or to carry on into Kerala, ask for a tailor-made route.
