Spiti Valley Travel Guide: Monasteries, Villages, Routes and Seasons
Spiti Valley is a high-altitude cold desert in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, near the Tibet border. The main places to visit in Spiti Valley are the monasteries of Key, Tabo and Dhankar, the villages of Kibber, Langza and Komic, and the Pin Valley National Park. The Shimla–Kinnaur road to Kaza is open almost all year; only the Kunzum route from Manali closes for winter.

All of Himachal PradeshFrequently asked questions
Can you see a snow leopard in Spiti?
Possibly, but rarely. Himachal Tourism calls the country around Kibber snow leopard habitat, and the district names April, May, November and early December as good months for sightings in the Pin Valley, when animals move lower. In summer, blue sheep and ibex are far likelier.
Can you visit Chandratal from Kaza?
Yes, while the Kunzum road is open, usually from June or July to October or November. Himachal Tourism puts the lake 98 km from Kaza, over the Kunzum La, so it is a long day out or a stop on the Manali road.
What can you do from Kaza in a day?
Key Monastery is about 12 km away and Kibber, Langza, Hikkim and Komic all lie within about 20 km, so one day covers the monastery in the morning and two or three villages after it. Fill up first: Kaza has an ATM and a fuel station.
What food will you find in Spiti?
Tibetan-style cooking: thukpa, momos and barley-flour dishes such as thuktal and shunali, with salted butter tea and chhang, the local brew. Kaza, the largest settlement, has a market with a few restaurants.
About Spiti Valley Tours & Experiences
The best things to do in Spiti Valley are a slow road loop between monasteries and high villages, a summer monastery festival, watching for blue sheep and ibex, and Chandratal lake while the Kunzum road is open. Our Spiti Valley circuit covers the loop with a private vehicle, driver and local guide.

Things to do in Spiti Valley
Almost all of Spiti lies above 3,000 metres, so everything moves at the pace of the altitude; the Spiti Valley travel guide describes each monastery and village.
Drive the loop, in by one road and out by the other
Our Spiti Valley circuit takes two days to get in, by the Shimla–Kinnaur road or the Kunzum La from Manali as the season allows, then a day for Kaza and Key Monastery and one for Kibber and Langza, before leaving by the other road where it is open.
Time your trip for a festival
June brings the Tsheshu masked dances at monasteries such as Key and Tabo, July the Kungri monks' dance in the Pin Valley, and the third week of August the Ladarcha fair at Kaza, once a barter market.
Look for blue sheep and ibex
Blue sheep and ibex graze the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, some 1,400 sq km of cold desert beyond Kibber, and the Pin Valley National Park protects snow leopard, ibex and bharal.
See Chandratal
Chandratal, the lake of the moon, lies at 4,337 metres in the upper Chandra valley and is a Ramsar wetland, reached by a side road from Batal or on foot from the Kunzum La.
Visit Langza and Komic
Langza is known for ammonite fossils and clay pottery; the road continues to Komic, at about 4,400 metres one of the highest villages reached by a motorable road.
Trek over a high pass
Old trails cross to Kullu by the Pin–Parvati pass (5,400 m), to Ladakh by the Parang La (5,580 m) and to Kinnaur by the Bhaba pass (4,865 m). They are for experienced trekkers who allow time to acclimatise; see trekking experiences in Himachal Pradesh.
Choosing between our tours and experiences
Here we offer one trip, the circuit, a tour by road for travellers happy with long drives, simple rooms and a route set by whichever pass is open. It sits on our Spiti Valley tour packages page; the rest of the state is on Himachal Pradesh tours and experiences.
When to go for these
The district names mid-May to mid-October as the best season. Chandratal and the full loop depend on the Kunzum road, shut from about October or November until June or July, while the Kinnaur road reaches Kaza almost all year. From December to February temperatures can drop to about minus 20°C.
Altitude, permits and supplies
Climb slowly, drink more water than feels natural and ask your doctor about medication; see our altitude sickness guide. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit near the Tibet border, including Tabo and Dhankar, which we arrange. Kaza is where to find an ATM and fuel, so carry cash.
