Maharashtra pairs Mumbai, India's financial and film capital, with the UNESCO-listed Ajanta and Ellora rock-cut caves and the Western Ghats hill retreat of Lonavala. October to March suits Mumbai and the caves; Lonavala is at its greenest during the monsoon.

About Maharashtra

Maharashtra centres on Mumbai, India's financial and film capital, a city of colonial-era landmarks, seafront promenades and relentless energy. Inland, the Ajanta and Ellora caves hold some of the finest rock-cut Buddhist, Hindu and Jain architecture and painting anywhere in India, carved directly into hillsides over more than a thousand years. Closer to Mumbai, the Western Ghats hill town of Lonavala offers an easy monsoon-season escape with waterfalls and valley views.

  • Mumbai

The Gateway of India, Marine Drive and the city's colonial-era railway terminus, CST.

  • Ajanta Caves

Buddhist rock-cut caves famous for their ancient wall paintings.

  • Ellora Caves

Rock-cut Buddhist, Hindu and Jain temples, including the vast Kailasa temple carved from a single rock.

  • Lonavala

A Western Ghats hill town known for its monsoon-season waterfalls and valley views.

Best time to visit

October to March suits Mumbai and a visit to the Ajanta and Ellora caves, avoiding both the intense pre-monsoon heat and the heaviest rains. Lonavala inverts this: it is at its greenest and most dramatic during the June-to-September monsoon, when its waterfalls run full, though the hill roads can be affected by heavy rain.

How many days do you need

Mumbai alone is comfortably covered in two to three days. The Ajanta and Ellora caves, near Aurangabad, are usually visited as a dedicated two-day side trip rather than a rushed day excursion, given the distance from Mumbai. Lonavala works as a one- or two-night weekend escape.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Ajanta and Ellora caves as a day trip from Mumbai?

No, the caves are near Aurangabad, a considerable distance from Mumbai; most travellers fly or drive to Aurangabad and treat the caves as their own two-day side trip.

What is the difference between Ajanta and Ellora?

Ajanta's caves are entirely Buddhist and famous for their ancient paintings; Ellora's caves span Buddhist, Hindu and Jain temples, including the enormous rock-cut Kailasa temple.

Is Lonavala worth visiting outside the monsoon?

It is at its best during the monsoon when the waterfalls run full; outside that season it is a quieter, drier hill escape.

How many days do you need for Maharashtra?

Mumbai alone is two to three days; adding Ajanta-Ellora as a side trip and Lonavala as a weekend escape makes for a fuller week.
