Frequently asked questions

When is the Mahabodhi Temple open, and when is the chanting?

The temple committee keeps the complex open every day of the week. Its published day begins with sutta chanting and meditation from 5.30 to 6 am, an offering of kheer is made at 10 am, and the evening brings Mahayana chanting from 6 to 6.30 pm and chanting in Pali from 6.30 to 7 pm. Opening hours published by different offices do not agree, so your specialist confirms them for your dates.

Can I take a phone or camera into the Mahabodhi Temple?

Do not count on it. Bihar Tourism's visitor rules for the Mahabodhi ban mobile phones, cameras and other electronic devices, and arrangements at the gate can change, so check there before you go in. Wherever photography is allowed, ask before photographing monks, and never photograph anyone who is meditating.

When is Buddha Purnima at Bodh Gaya?

On the full moon of Vaisakha, which usually falls in May. The Government of Bihar describes the day as marking the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing, and at Bodh Gaya the temple committee has led a procession from the Great Buddha statue to the Bodhi Tree, with a ceremony beneath it. May is Gaya's hottest month, averaging about 40°C by day, so join in during the cooler hours.

Can I fly to Bodh Gaya from Thailand, Myanmar or Bhutan?

In the pilgrim season, yes. The Airports Authority of India notes that Gaya Airport, a short drive from Bodh Gaya, handles flights from Thailand, Myanmar and Bhutan during the pilgrim season, as well as domestic flights from cities including Delhi and Kolkata. Schedules change from one season to the next, so check before booking. The tour can meet you at Gaya and finish at Patna, or the other way round.

Can I add Sujata Garh and the Dungeshwari caves?

Yes, with a second night in Bodh Gaya. Sujata Garh, at Bakraur across the Niranjana, is a stupa protected by the Archaeological Survey, about 2 km from town, at the place where Sujata is said to have given the Buddha the rice pudding that ended his years of fasting. The Dungeshwari hill caves, where tradition places his long years of meditation before Bodh Gaya, are further afield, so allow half a day there and back by car.

Why does the tour sleep in Rajgir rather than return to Bodh Gaya?

Because of the distances. The temple committee puts Nalanda about 101 km from Bodh Gaya by road, but it is only about 15 km beyond Rajgir. A night at Rajgir lets you see its hills and the Vishwa Shanti Stupa on the second day, then reach Nalanda's ruins and museum early on the third, leaving time for the return to Gaya or Patna and your onward journey.

Why go to Bodh Gaya

The whole town turns on one spot: the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment, which UNESCO counts among the four holy sites of his life. The first temple on the site was the emperor Ashoka's, built in the 3rd century BCE, and the brick temple that stands now, some 50 metres tall, was built in the 5th or 6th century. West of it grows the Bodhi Tree, probably the fifth in succession from the original according to the temple committee, beside the Vajrasana, the polished stone seat that marks where he sat. Seven sacred spots in the complex recall the weeks he spent there afterwards, and Thai, Bhutanese, Japanese, Tibetan and other Buddhist communities have built monasteries around the complex. More in our Bodh Gaya travel guide.

How many days to give Bodh Gaya

On the 3 Days Bodhgaya Rajgir and Nalanda Tour Package, Bodh Gaya has the first afternoon, evening and night, time for the Mahabodhi complex and the Bodhi Tree. If the town itself is your goal, ask for a second night: it frees a morning for the dawn chanting, the monasteries and the Great Buddha statue, and an afternoon for Sujata Garh across the Niranjana river or the caves of Dungeshwari hill. The archaeological museum is generally closed on Fridays, so plan around that day. The tour then drives on to Rajgir, about one and a half to two hours away.

When to go

The tour runs best between October and March, and Bihar Tourism's wider window is September to April. A January morning at the temple starts close to 9°C, IMD's average low for Gaya, and warms to about 23°C by afternoon, so a warm layer helps at dawn. April afternoons average about 39°C, and May is hotter still. About 85 per cent of Gaya's yearly rain falls from June to September, most of it in July. Buddha Purnima, on the Vaisakha full moon, generally comes in May, at the hottest time of year.

How to reach Bodh Gaya

Gaya's airport, listed under the code GAY and also known as Bodhgaya Airport, lies a short drive from the town, with domestic flights that include Delhi and Kolkata. The nearest railhead is Gaya Junction, 17 km by road, while Patna is a drive of well over 100 km. The tour picks you up when you reach Gaya or Patna and drives you straight to Bodh Gaya for the first afternoon. In town, auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws move between the temple and the monasteries.

What the Bodh Gaya tour package includes

Your first day is built around the temple: you are collected, driven to Bodh Gaya and guided round the Mahabodhi complex and the Bodhi Tree from the afternoon into the evening, before a night in town. From then on the same private car and driver take you to Rajgir, where the ropeway ticket to the Vishwa Shanti Stupa is covered, and on to Nalanda. Breakfast is listed for the second and third mornings. You pay separately for getting to Gaya or Patna, for museum tickets, for meals other than those two breakfasts and for travel insurance, and your quote names where you stay. Cancel up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund.

How your Bodh Gaya trip is tailored

The plan follows the temple's day. The temple committee holds chanting and meditation at dawn and evening sessions of Mahayana and Pali chanting, and the tour's first evening can be timed to catch them. Pilgrims who want longer at the Bodhi Tree, for meditation or offerings, can add a second night. Inside the complex, dress modestly, take off your footwear and keep silent. For Patna, Vaishali and the rest of the state, see Bihar tour packages, and for Sarnath, where he first taught, Sarnath from Varanasi.
