Maharajas' Express and its rivals, compared
India's four luxury trains split cleanly by region: the Maharajas' Express and Palace on Wheels both focus on Rajasthan and the north (with the Express extending further and marketed as the more premium option), while the Deccan Odyssey covers Maharashtra and Goa and the Golden Chariot covers Karnataka and South India.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a luxury train journey in India cost?
Fares vary by train, cabin class, route and season, and are set directly by each operator rather than published as a flat rate. We confirm the current rate sheet for your preferred dates on enquiry — purchase is by enquiry, not instant booking.
Can I charter one of these trains for a private date?
No — all four run to a fixed, published seasonal departure calendar. You book a berth on a scheduled journey rather than chartering the train for a custom date.
Which is the most luxurious?
The Maharajas' Express is generally regarded as the most premium and is the most internationally marketed of the four, though all four position themselves at the luxury tier.
How far ahead should I book?
Several months ahead, and ideally as soon as the season's departure calendar is published, since cabins on the most popular routes and dates sell out early.
Do these trains suit older or less mobile travellers?
Generally yes — journeys are slow-paced with onboard dining and lounge cars, and excursions off the train are optional, though some station platforms and monument visits involve walking and steps.
About India's luxury trains
India has four established luxury trains, each covering a different circuit: the Maharajas' Express runs the most premium, multi-region routes; Palace on Wheels loops through Rajasthan; the Deccan Odyssey covers Maharashtra and Goa; and the Golden Chariot runs South India.
How India's luxury trains differ
Each of India's four luxury trains is a fixed-route, fixed-season, scheduled-departure product — you book a berth on a specific journey rather than chartering the train, and departures typically run from around October to April, when the weather across their respective regions is at its best.
They are pitched at slightly different travellers: the Maharajas' Express positions itself as the most premium and internationally marketed of the four, while Palace on Wheels, the oldest, leans into Rajasthan's royal-heritage theme at a relatively more accessible tier. The Deccan Odyssey and Golden Chariot cover regions the other two do not — Maharashtra/Goa and South India respectively — so the choice is often about the region you want to see as much as the train itself.
What matters when choosing between them
- Region and stopsdecide which part of India you want to see by rail before comparing trains; routes do not overlap much.
- Durationthese run from around three nights to a full week; match it to how much time you can give a slow, scenic mode of travel.
- Seasonall four operate a limited winter-into-spring season with a fixed departure calendar, not on-demand.
- Cabin tier and seasonfares are set by the operator and vary by cabin class, route and season; we do not publish figures here and confirm the current rate sheet on enquiry.
- What you actually want from itthe appeal is the journey and the onboard experience (dining car, lounge, butler service) as much as the destinations, which are also reachable by road or air.

How to choose
If you want the single best-known name and are travelling Delhi–Rajasthan–Agra, the Maharajas' Express is the obvious first look, though it is also the most sought-after and books out furthest ahead.
If your route is specifically Rajasthan and you want the classic royal-train experience at a different tier, Palace on Wheels is the natural comparison — see our full luxury-trains comparison for the detail.
If your itinerary is centred on Maharashtra, Goa or South India rather than the north, the Deccan Odyssey or Golden Chariot are the only realistic rail options, since the other two do not run there.
Season notes
All four trains run a winter-into-spring season, broadly October to April, avoiding the summer heat and monsoon. Departure calendars are published by each operator ahead of the season and change year to year — we check current departures against your travel dates before booking.
