Karnataka runs from Bengaluru, India's technology capital, through Mysore's royal palace and the boulder-strewn ruins of Hampi, to the coffee-growing hills of Coorg. October to March suits Hampi and Mysore; Coorg is pleasant most of the year outside the heaviest monsoon months.

About Karnataka

Karnataka pairs a modern, fast-growing capital, Bengaluru, with some of South India's richest heritage and landscape. Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, scattered across a surreal boulder landscape. Mysore holds one of India's grandest royal palaces. Coorg, in the Western Ghats, is a cooler hill region of coffee, spice and cardamom plantations. Together they make one of South India's better-rounded circuits.

  • Hampi

The ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, spread across a boulder-strewn landscape.

  • Mysore

A royal palace city, famous for its illuminated palace and its Dussehra celebrations.

  • Coorg

A Western Ghats hill region of coffee estates, spice plantations and misty viewpoints.

  • Bengaluru

India's technology capital, with a milder climate, gardens and a strong food and craft-beer scene.

Best time to visit

October to March suits Hampi and Mysore, avoiding the pre-monsoon heat. Coorg is pleasant for much of the year given its altitude, though the June-to-September monsoon brings heavy rain that some travellers still enjoy for the greenery. Bengaluru's mild climate makes it comfortable across most of the year.

How many days do you need

Hampi alone rewards two full days given how spread out the ruins are. Mysore is a comfortable one to two days. Coorg, given the drive in, wants two to three days to be worth the journey. A rounded Karnataka trip combining all three, plus Bengaluru at either end, runs to around a week to ten days.
