How do Rohtang Pass permits work?
Each vehicle going up to Rohtang for sightseeing needs a permit from the Kullu district administration, applied for online. Numbers are capped under National Green Tribunal orders at 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles a day; a permit is valid for one day, can be requested up to two days ahead, and needs a valid pollution certificate and a vehicle under ten years old. A congestion charge applies at Gulaba. The permit is not included in the Himachal Hills Tour.
What is the Atal Tunnel, and does it replace the Rohtang road?
For travel north, yes. The Atal Tunnel, opened on 3 October 2020, runs 9.02 km under the Rohtang Pass at about 3,000 metres, from a south portal 25 km from Manali to the Lahaul valley near Sissu. It keeps Lahaul connected to Manali all year, where the valley used to be cut off for about six months each winter, and shortens the road to Leh by 46 km. Rohtang itself is now a separate sightseeing trip, with its own permit.
When does Manali get snow, and can I ski?
Snow comes in the deep of winter: the state tourism department says December and January temperatures in Manali can fall below minus 5°C. Solang's slopes then become a ski area, where state and national ski championships are held, and the town's winter carnival takes place in the first week of January. Rohtang is closed through the winter. The Himachal Hills Tour is recommended for spring and autumn, so for snow, ask for a tailor-made winter plan.
What is there to do around Manali?
In summer, Solang Nullah, 13 km from town, offers a gondola ropeway, paragliding, zorbing and quad-bike rides. Naggar, 22 km down the valley and the old capital of Kullu, has a castle that Himachal Tourism runs as a museum and heritage hotel, and the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery. Vashisht village, reached on foot from the market, has hot springs. On the Himachal Hills Tour, Solang's activities are paid separately, so you choose which to do.
Is Manali crowded in summer?
At times, yes. The state tourism department names April to July, when visitors escape the heat of the plains, and October to December as the busy seasons, and the Rohtang road draws most traffic from June to August. Access to Rohtang is capped each day to protect the pass, so plan that day early. For a quieter visit, ask about March or September dates; both fall inside the seasons the Himachal Hills Tour is planned for.
Can I start a Spiti Valley trip from Manali?
Yes, in the warmer months. From Manali the road to Kaza runs through the Atal Tunnel and over the Kunzum pass, which the Lahaul and Spiti district says is usually closed from about October or November until June or July. Our Spiti Valley circuit chooses its way in by season and can start from Manali when the pass is open, leaving towards Shimla if roads allow. Because Spiti is high, the circuit's days are paced to let you acclimatise.
About Manali Tour Packages
Our private Manali trips are for travellers who want the Kullu valley as part of a longer mountain journey: three nights in Manali on the seven-day Himachal Hills Tour between Shimla and Dharamshala, or the Manali–Leh highway, the summer road over the high passes into Ladakh. Your dates, budget and group set the plan, and a written quote comes before any payment.

Why go to Manali
Manali stands at the head of the Kullu valley on the Beas river, among deodar and pine forest under snow peaks. The town has two parts: the Mall and its market, and Old Manali a short walk beyond, with the Manu temple, guesthouses and cafes. Nearby, the Hadimba Devi temple, a four-tiered pagoda of wood and stone from the 16th century, stands among deodars. Manali is also where the roads north begin: the Atal Tunnel, whose south portal is 25 km away, leads to Lahaul and on towards Spiti and Ladakh. The Manali travel guide describes the town in more detail, and our Himachal Pradesh tour packages cover the wider state.
How many days to give Manali
Three or four days covers the valley with a day out to Solang or towards Rohtang, as our Manali guide suggests; allow longer if Manali is the start of a drive to Spiti or Leh. The Himachal Hills Tour — 7 days gives Manali three nights, its longest stop, between two nights in Shimla and a last night in Dharamshala. The Manali–Leh highway begins here and ends in Leh, with overnight stops on the way; the usual pattern is to drive one way and fly the other.
When to go
The state tourism department names April to July and October to December as Manali's busy seasons, with summer temperatures of about 22 to 30°C. The Himachal Hills Tour is planned for March to June and September to November, away from winter snow and the monsoon, when landslides can affect the road. Rohtang opens to traffic around May, is busiest from June to August and closes in late November. Winter is for snow (see the questions below), and our guide to the best time to visit Manali for snowfall covers the snow months.
How to reach Manali
The nearest airport is Kullu–Manali at Bhuntar, 50 km down the valley, with flights of about an hour and a half from Delhi, and others from Chandigarh and Shimla. There is no railway nearby: the narrow-gauge line from Pathankot ends at Joginder Nagar, and the other nearest stations, Kiratpur and Una, are 200 km or more from Kullu. By road, Manali is about 550 km from Delhi, with regular Volvo buses. On the Himachal Hills Tour you arrive by car from Shimla.
What our Manali tour packages include
On the Himachal Hills Tour, your three Manali nights are in a hotel as confirmed at enquiry, with daily breakfast and a private car and driver for the valley; Solang's adventure activities and any Rohtang Pass permit are paid separately, as are lunches and dinners. The Manali–Leh highway package gives you a private vehicle and an experienced driver for the whole road, nights at the stops en route, a room in Leh when you arrive, and the permits your Ladakh plans call for. Flights, such as the one home from Leh, are not included.
How to choose your Manali tour package
Choose the Himachal Hills Tour — 7 days for classic hill-station Himachal with Manali at its centre, between Shimla and Dharamshala; it suits travellers who want the mountains without high-altitude adventure. The Manali–Leh highway is for travellers who see the road as the reason to go, such as keen road-trippers and photographers, comfortable with long days and basic highway stops at Sarchu or Pang; it is not for anyone in a hurry. A tailor-made trip suits better for Manali alone, a winter stay for the snow, or a start to Spiti (see below).
