About Punjab
Punjab, in India's northwest, is best known to travellers for one city: Amritsar, home to the Golden Temple, Sikhism's holiest shrine, and one of the most moving sights in India regardless of your own faith. The state's food, hospitality and agricultural wealth are well known within India, but for most international visitors a Punjab trip means Amritsar, often paired with the nightly flag-lowering ceremony at the Wagah border with Pakistan.
The Golden Temple, Amritsar
Sikhism's holiest shrine, gilded and set in a sacred pool, with a free community kitchen (langar) feeding all visitors regardless of faith.
Wagah border ceremony
A nightly, highly choreographed flag-lowering ceremony at the India-Pakistan border, a short drive from Amritsar.
Jallianwala Bagh
A memorial garden marking the site of the 1919 massacre, a short walk from the Golden Temple.
Best time to visit, and how many days
October to March is the comfortable season; summer is very hot. One to two days is enough to see the Golden Temple properly, eat at the langar, and take in the Wagah border ceremony in the same trip.
Punjab's food
Amritsar and the wider Punjab region are one of India's most consistent food destinations: tandoor-baked kulcha, rich makhani curries, sarson da saag with makki di roti in winter, and lassi thick enough to eat with a spoon. It is worth building at least one meal stop into any Punjab itinerary beyond the temple and the border.
