Munnar travel guide

Frequently asked questions

When is Eravikulam National Park closed?

Every year for the Nilgiri tahr's calving season. The park's official site gives the closure as 1 February to 1 April, and its notice lists the closed period as February to March. Outside it, tickets are sold online on the park's own site and at a counter in Munnar. If seeing the tahr matters, come in December or January, or from April; the closure does not affect the tea estates.

How long is the drive up to Munnar?

From Kochi, about 130 km: the Idukki district administration puts it at about four and a half hours, and our routes allow about four, through spice plantations and past waterfalls. From Madurai it is about 153 km, five to six hours over the Western Ghats on the South India route. Much of the way is a winding hill road, which some travellers, children especially, find makes them carsick, so we allow for stops.

Will the neelakurinji be flowering when I visit?

Almost certainly not. The neelakurinji, a shrub of these hills, flowers in a mass only once every twelve years and turns the slopes blue. Munnar's last great flowering, on the Rajamala hills in Eravikulam, was in 2018, and Kerala Tourism expects the next in 2030. Smaller, isolated flowerings are reported in some years in between, so ask us before your dates if it matters to you.

Can I see how tea is made in Munnar?

Yes. On the Kerala Backwaters Tour — 7 days, the morning of day 3 is spent at a working tea estate and the tea museum, which shows the machinery, photographs and objects of Munnar's early plantations; it stands on the Nallathanni estate. The Ayurveda and South India routes also include a tea estate visit on their full day in Munnar, and your local guide on the Backwaters tour walks you through it.

How far is Top Station, and can I add it?

Top Station is about 32 km from Munnar, at around 1,700 metres, the highest point on the Munnar–Kodaikanal road, and its viewpoint looks out over the plains of Tamil Nadu. It is not on our standard itineraries, so it suits a third night, when the drive there and back does not crowd the tea estate and Eravikulam. In the monsoon months mist often hides the view.

Can I trek to the top of Anamudi?

Not on a normal visit. Anamudi, at 2,695 metres the highest peak in South India, stands inside Eravikulam National Park, and treks to the summit are allowed only with permission from the forest and wildlife authorities at Eravikulam; the park penalises unauthorised trekking. If walking matters to you, tell us, and a specialist will plan estate walks around your stay instead.

Which route goes on from Munnar to Thekkady?

The Kerala Ayurveda Retreat — 10 days. After two nights in Munnar it drives south on day 4 to Thekkady, about 110 km away, for three nights beside the Periyar Tiger Reserve, starting with a consultation with the resort's physician. The Backwaters tour and the South India tour go straight down to Alleppey instead; Thekkady can be added to them in a tailor-made quote.

Why go to Munnar

Munnar grew up where three mountain streams meet, the Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala, at about 1,600 metres in the Western Ghats, and was once a summer retreat for the British administration in South India. Tea covers the slopes around it, and the estates are still worked: the tea museum on the Nallathanni estate tells the story of the plantations through old machinery and photographs. About 13 km from town, Eravikulam National Park protects 97 sq km of the hills and the endangered Nilgiri tahr, below Anamudi, at 2,695 metres the highest peak in South India. Top Station, 32 km away, looks down into Tamil Nadu. More in our Munnar travel guide.

How many days to give Munnar

Every route here gives Munnar two nights, with the full day between them spent in the hills. On the Kerala Backwaters Tour — 7 days you arrive from Kochi on day 2, spend the morning of day 3 at a working tea estate and its museum, then see a viewpoint and Eravikulam if the season allows. The Kerala Ayurveda Retreat — 10 days has the same two nights before Thekkady, and the 10 Days South India Tour Package arrives from Madurai on day 6. A third night allows Top Station or the lake at Mattupetty.

When to go

December and January are the most reliable months: dry, with Eravikulam open. The park closes each year for the Nilgiri tahr's calving season, 1 February to 1 April by its own notice, so February and March visits see the tea but not the tahr. October is wet: Idukki district, which includes Munnar, normally gets more rain in the first three weeks of October than any other Kerala district. From June to September, mist and monsoon rain can hide the viewpoints. Evenings are cooler than on the coast; pack a warm layer. Read our best time to visit Munnar article.

How to reach Munnar

Munnar has no airport or railway station. Cochin International Airport is the nearest, about 108 km away, and the nearest stations are Aluva and Angamaly, about the same distance. From Kochi it is about 130 km by road, which the Idukki district administration puts at about four and a half hours; our itineraries allow about four, climbing through spice plantations and past waterfalls. From Madurai in Tamil Nadu it is about 153 km over the Ghats, five to six hours on our South India route. Thekkady is about 110 km south.

What our Munnar tour packages include

Each route listed here gives you your own car and driver for the climb and the days in the hills, with daily breakfast. The Kerala Backwaters tour adds a local guide in Munnar and hotel stays confirmed at enquiry; Eravikulam's entry fee is not included. The Ayurveda Retreat books resort stays with Ayurveda facilities, as confirmed at enquiry. Where you sleep matters here: our planning advice is to stay among the tea estates rather than in Munnar town, which puts the walks and viewpoints on your doorstep. Lunches and dinners in Munnar are extra.

How to choose your Munnar tour package

Choose the Kerala Backwaters Tour if Munnar is part of a first Kerala trip: tea hills, then a houseboat and Varkala's cliff, a pace that suits couples, families and slower travellers. The Kerala Ayurveda Retreat treats Munnar as the last sightseeing stop before quieter days of treatment at Thekkady. The 10 Days South India Tour Package reaches Munnar from Madurai, for travellers who want temples and backwaters together. For longer in the hills, ask for a tailor-made plan; our Kerala tour packages show the wider routes.
