Frequently asked questions

Is the Taj Mahal closed on Fridays?

Yes. The Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors every Friday, when its mosque opens only for prayers. On other days it opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset. Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and Mehtab Bagh stay open on Fridays, so a Friday in Agra is not wasted, and we place your Taj visit on the day before or after. The Gatimaan Express from Delhi does not run on Fridays either.

Should I see Agra on a day trip from Delhi or stay a night?

Stay a night if you can. A day trip is typically 12 to 14 hours door to door by road, and you usually reach the Taj after the early light, with the crowds. A night in Agra puts you at the gate as it opens, with Agra Fort the same morning and time for Fatehpur Sikri. If your days are short, our Agra day trip from Delhi is planned to make the long day work.

How many days do I need in Agra?

One night covers the essentials: the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort and, on the way in or out, Fatehpur Sikri. Two nights let you slow down and add Mehtab Bagh at sunset and the city's other Mughal tombs. Fatehpur Sikri from Agra takes three to four hours including the drive, so it fits easily into a stay of one night or more.

What is the best time to visit Agra?

October to March, ideally at sunrise. December and January can bring dense morning fog that delays trains and flights and hides the marble at dawn, so keep a spare morning if photographs matter. April to June is very hot, with afternoons that can reach 45°C, and the monsoon, from late June into September, is humid and wet. Avoid Fridays, when the Taj is closed.

How do I get from Delhi to Agra?

By road, about three to four hours on the Yamuna Expressway, depending on traffic. By train, the Gatimaan Express takes about 100 minutes from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantt and runs six days a week, not on Fridays; other trains run daily. Agra's own airport at Kheria has only a few domestic flights, so international travellers usually fly into Delhi and continue by road or rail.

Can I see the Taj Mahal at night?

Yes, on up to five nights a month: the full-moon night and two nights either side, except Fridays and during Ramzan. Tickets are limited, sold separately by the Archaeological Survey of India, and best booked well ahead. Phones are not allowed on night visits, though a still camera is permitted after the security check. Ask us to plan it into a stay in Agra.

What can I take into the Taj Mahal?

Keep it light. Food, tobacco, drones, phone chargers, headphones and tripods (without Archaeological Survey of India permission) are not allowed, and big bags slow the security check. Phones should be switched off or on silent, and photography is not allowed inside the main mausoleum, which needs a separate ticket on top of the standard one. Dress modestly: it is a tomb as well as a monument.

Do I need a guide at the Taj Mahal?

A guide is not compulsory, but touts and unofficial guides wait near the gates and ticket counters, and the official Taj Mahal website advises hiring approved guides who show their identity cards. Every package listed here includes a private guide arranged before you arrive, so there is nobody to negotiate with at the gate and your time inside goes on the monument itself.

Can I combine Agra with other places?

Yes. Agra is the middle stop of the Golden Triangle with Delhi and Jaipur, and our routes also pair it with Ranthambore for tiger safaris, Mathura and Vrindavan for Krishna's temples, Varanasi on the Ganges and Amritsar's Golden Temple. See Uttar Pradesh tour packages and multi-state India tours for the full routes.

About Agra Tour Packages

Our private Agra trips suit first-time visitors, families and pilgrims who want to see the Taj Mahal properly: a sunrise visit, a day trip from Delhi, Fatehpur Sikri, and longer routes such as the Golden Triangle, Mathura and Vrindavan with Agra, or the Taj with a Ranthambore tiger safari. Each is tailor-made around your dates, budget and group, and confirmed with a written quote before you pay anything.

Why go to Agra

Agra, on the Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh, has three UNESCO World Heritage Sites within about 40 km of each other. The Taj Mahal, the white-marble mausoleum the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built between 1631 and 1648 for his wife, is what most visitors come for. Agra Fort, the 16th-century Mughal fortress also called the Red Fort of Agra, stands about 2.5 km away. Fatehpur Sikri, the city Akbar built in the second half of the 16th century and kept as his capital for only about ten years, lies 36 to 40 km west. Directly across the river, the Mehtab Bagh garden gives a quieter view of the Taj at sunset. More in our Agra travel guide.

How many days to give Agra

One night is enough for the essentials: the Taj Mahal as the gates open, Agra Fort the same morning and, with a spare half-day, Fatehpur Sikri. The Taj Mahal sunrise tour collects you from your Agra hotel before dawn, timed to the gate opening, and most of our longer routes give Agra one night: the Golden Triangle Tour (6 days), Tiger Safari and Taj Mahal (7 days) and the North India Classic Tour (14 days). The Agra day trip from Delhi is typically 12 to 14 hours door to door by road.

When to go

October to March is the season, with cool, comfortable mornings for a sunrise visit. December and January nights are cold, and dense morning fog can delay trains, flights and the drive from Delhi and hide the marble at dawn, so keep a spare morning. April to June is very hot, with afternoons that can reach 45°C. The monsoon usually covers the state by the end of June and lasts into September, humid and wet, with rain that can slow the roads. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday. More in our guide to the best time to visit India.

How to reach Agra

Most travellers come from Delhi, a little over 200 km away: about three to four hours by car on the Yamuna Expressway, depending on traffic. The Gatimaan Express runs from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantt in about 100 minutes, six days a week (not on Fridays), and other trains run daily. Agra Cantt station is about 6 km from the Taj. Agra's small airport at Kheria has only a few domestic flights, so international travellers usually fly into Delhi. No petrol or diesel vehicle may go within 500 metres of the Taj; battery buses run from the car parks.

What our Agra tour packages include

Every package listed here includes a private vehicle with a driver and a private guide, arranged before you arrive: a government-approved guide on the Taj Mahal sunrise tour and the Fatehpur Sikri day trip, and a local guide in each city on multi-city routes. Several include help booking monument tickets in advance. Hotels and daily breakfast are included where a package lists them, confirmed at enquiry; some add three safaris with park fees at Ranthambore, domestic flights, or a boat ride and Ganga Aarti seating in Varanasi. Monument tickets, including the separate Taj mausoleum ticket, are usually extra.

How to choose your Agra tour package

Short of time in Delhi and happy with a long day: the Agra day trip from Delhi; families with young children usually do better with a night in Agra. Staying in Agra: the Taj Mahal sunrise tour, plus Fatehpur Sikri from Agra with a spare half-day, or the Fatehpur Sikri day trip on the way to Jaipur. First time in India: the Golden Triangle Tour, or Golden Triangle with kids for children six and older. Wildlife too: Tiger Safari and Taj Mahal, where sightings are never guaranteed. Pilgrims: the 4 Days Mathura Vrindavan Agra Tour.
