Rameswaram travel guide

Frequently asked questions

When can I bathe in the 22 wells at the Ramanathaswamy temple?

By the temple's published timings, from 5.30 am to 12.30 pm and from 3 to 7 pm. Water is drawn from each of the 22 wells (theerthams) in turn and poured over you, so wear clothes you do not mind soaking and bring a dry change; there are toilets near the Agni Theertham beach. Bathing is optional for visitors, and a guide can explain the order of the wells and the etiquette.

When is the Spatika linga darshan, and when is the temple open?

The temple opens at 4 am, and darshan begins at 5 am with the Spatika (crystal) linga, shown from 5 to 6 am. Darshan at the main shrine then continues until 1 pm; the temple closes from 1 to 3 pm, darshan resumes at 3.15 pm until 8 pm, and the temple shuts by 9 pm. The temple also sells special-entrance and quick-darshan tickets for the main shrine.

What is the new Pamban bridge?

It is the railway bridge that carries trains onto Rameswaram island: India's first vertical-lift railway sea bridge, about 2 km long, with a 72.5-metre span that rises 17 metres to let ships pass beneath. It opened on 6 April 2025, about 27 metres north of the 1914 bridge it replaced. You see it from the road bridge as you drive onto the island, or ride over it by train.

Can I visit Dhanushkodi from Rameswaram?

Yes, by road: it is about 18 km from Rameswaram. Dhanushkodi was a town until a cyclone washed it away in 1964, and in the Ramayana it is where the building of Ram Setu, the bridge to Lanka, began. With one night on the island, a visit is tight alongside the temple and the wells, so ask your specialist for a second night if it matters to you.

Is Rameswaram affected by cyclones?

It can be. The island is low-lying, and October to December brings the northeast monsoon and the Bay of Bengal's main cyclone season. The new rail bridge stops trains automatically when the wind passes 58 km/h, so a storm can hold up rail travel to and from the island. If a warning is issued while you travel, our support team is on call 24/7 and can help rearrange the route.

Is there a trip to just Rameswaram and Madurai?

Yes. The Rameswaram and Madurai temple trail covers the two temples by private car with local guides, planned around your dates; most routes fly into Madurai and drive on to Rameswaram, or run the other way. It suits a short trip, or a pilgrimage centred on the Ramanathaswamy and Meenakshi Amman temples. See also Madurai tour packages.

About Rameswaram Tour Packages

Our private Rameswaram trips are for pilgrims and travellers who want the Ramanathaswamy temple, one of the four Char Dham, as part of a journey through Tamil Nadu's deep south. The South India Temple Trail and the six-day pilgrimage from Tirupati each give the island a night between Madurai and Kanyakumari. Every trip is tailor-made and confirmed with a written quote before you pay anything.

Why go to Rameswaram

Rameswaram is an island town off Tamil Nadu's south-east coast, joined to the mainland by road and rail bridges across the Pamban strait. Its Ramanathaswamy temple is among Shiva's twelve Jyotirlinga shrines and is one of the four Char Dham; the temple's own history tells how Rama, with Sita and Lakshmana, worshipped a linga that Sita made of sand. Many pilgrims bathe in the sea at Agni Theertham, by the temple, then in water from its 22 holy wells, and walk its pillared corridors, famous for their length. The island also has a memorial to Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who came from Rameswaram, and, at its tip, the ruins of Dhanushkodi. More in our Rameswaram travel guide.

How many days to give Rameswaram

Each package listed here gives Rameswaram one night, arriving from Madurai and leaving the next day for Kanyakumari: day 7 on the South India Temple Trail — 10 days, after two nights in Madurai, and day 4 on the 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour. One night lets you see the temple in the evening and again at dawn, when the Spatika linga darshan runs from 5 to 6 am, and bathe at the wells before the drive south. For Dhanushkodi or a slower day on the island, ask for a second night: every trip is tailor-made.

When to go

Rameswaram is dry for most of the year and wet in one season. In the Ramanathapuram district, about two-thirds of the normal yearly rain falls from October to December, with the northeast monsoon, and little from June to September. Tamil Nadu Tourism suggests October to March, and our packages are planned for November to March. In November and December, allow for heavy rain and strong wind: those months are also the Bay of Bengal's main cyclone season. Our Tamil Nadu best-time guide goes month by month.

How to reach Rameswaram

The nearest airport is Madurai, about 175 km away, about three hours by road; Thoothukudi's domestic airport is about 195 km. You drive onto the island over the road bridge, beside the new Pamban rail bridge, India's first vertical-lift sea bridge, which opened in April 2025 in place of the 1914 original. Trains run to Rameswaram station, 1.3 km from the temple, including a service from Tambaram in Chennai. Our packages arrive by private car from Madurai.

What our Rameswaram tour packages include

Your own car and driver, from Madurai onto the island and on to Kanyakumari, is part of every package listed here. The South India Temple Trail adds a local guide at the major temple sites, hotel stays confirmed at enquiry and daily breakfast. On the six-day pilgrimage you get help with the darshan queues and special-entry tickets, where they apply. The temple trail lists temple camera fees and special-entry tickets as extra, and no package here covers lunches, dinners or travel insurance.

How to choose your Rameswaram tour package

These packages reach Rameswaram the same way, from Madurai for one night, and go on to Kanyakumari; the difference is the rest of the trip. The South India Temple Trail — 10 days is the fuller journey, for travellers interested in temple architecture: it starts in Chennai, takes in Mahabalipuram and Thanjavur, and ends with two nights at Kanyakumari. The 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour is a pilgrimage that starts with darshan at Tirumala and keeps a quicker pace, with one night at Kanyakumari. If Rameswaram is the main reason for your trip, a tailor-made route can give the island two nights, with Dhanushkodi and an unhurried morning at the wells.
