How long should I allow for Mehrangarh Fort?
Two to three hours with a guide covers the museum galleries, the period rooms and the ramparts, and Jaswant Thada, a short drive away, adds a little more. The museum opens every day from 9 am to 5 pm, so a 9 am start keeps you ahead of the midday heat. Our Mehrangarh Fort tour includes a government-approved guide and help booking tickets in advance; the tickets themselves are paid separately.
Is Mehrangarh Fort hard to walk?
In places. The way up to the palace courtyards is a long ramp, and inside you cross old stone floors, with steps between the galleries. The museum also runs a one-way lift, which helps older travellers and anyone who finds steep ground hard. Wear comfortable shoes, carry water in the warmer months, and tell us about any mobility needs so that your guide can plan the route around them.
Why is Jodhpur called the Blue City?
For the blue-washed houses of the old city below Mehrangarh, which you see best from the fort's ramparts and then on foot. The lanes are narrow and busy, so walking them with a local guide is the easiest way to find the viewpoints, the markets and the street food without getting lost. The Royal Rajasthan Circuit and the Rajasthan Grand Tour give Jodhpur two nights, which leaves time for the old city as well as the fort.
Can I reach Jodhpur by train or plane from Delhi?
Yes, either way. Flights from Delhi land at Jodhpur's airport, about 5 km from the centre, and direct trains run from Delhi, including a Vande Bharat from Delhi Cantonment. On our routes you arrive by road instead, from Jaipur, Pushkar or Udaipur, with your own car and driver, and the North India Classic Tour leaves Jodhpur by air, flying on to Varanasi via Delhi.
What is Jaswant Thada, and can I add it?
It is a white marble memorial to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, built by Maharaja Sardar Singh and often called the Taj Mahal of Marwar, a short drive from Mehrangarh. It opens every day from 9 am to 5 pm. On the Mehrangarh Fort tour it can be added the same day, with its ticket paid separately; routes that give Jodhpur two nights leave time for it without rushing.
When is the Marwar Festival?
It is a two-day festival of Marwar's folk music and dance, held each year in the Hindu month of Ashwin, in September or October, with events at the clock tower and on the dunes at Osian. Among its events is a camel tattoo show. Rajasthan Tourism publishes the dates each year; tell us if you would like to be in Jodhpur for it.
Is Jodhpur too hot to visit in summer?
For most visitors, April to June is hard going: May averages 41°C by day and June 40°C, and the fort's stone ramparts take the full sun. If those are your only dates, plan Mehrangarh for the 9 am opening, keep the middle of the day indoors and walk the old city in the evening. From October to March days are warm rather than hot, and the walking is far easier.

Why go to Jodhpur
Jodhpur grew up below Mehrangarh Fort, which Rao Jodha began in 1459 on a hill about 125 metres above the city. Inside, the fort's museum has galleries of howdahs, palanquins, paintings, textiles and arms, and period rooms such as the Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal and Sheesh Mahal. Below the walls, the old city's houses are washed in shades of blue, which is why Jodhpur is called the Blue City. Close by are Jaswant Thada, a white marble memorial to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II; the clock tower and Sardar Market; and Umaid Bhawan Palace, which Maharaja Umaid Singh began in 1929. More in our Jodhpur travel guide.
How many days to give Jodhpur
Two nights suits Jodhpur: a full morning at Mehrangarh, then the old city and Jaswant Thada without rushing. The six-day Royal Rajasthan Circuit gives it two nights between Jaipur and Udaipur, and the twelve-day Rajasthan Grand Tour two between Pushkar and Jaisalmer. The fourteen-day North India Classic Tour stops for one night, arriving from Udaipur and flying on to Varanasi. Already in the city? The Mehrangarh Fort tour takes you up to the fort with a private guide, collecting you from your hotel.
When to go
October to March. January averages about 25°C by day and 10°C at night, good weather for the fort's open ramparts, while March and October reach about 34–36°C by day. April to June is very hot: May averages 41°C, and Mehrangarh's stone ramparts take the full sun. Jodhpur is dry, with about 370 mm of rain a year, falling on roughly six days a month in July and August. The two-day Marwar Festival comes in September or October. The state's seasons are set out in our guide to the best time to visit Rajasthan.
How to reach Jodhpur
Jodhpur's airport is about 5 km from the city centre, with flights from Delhi and Mumbai, and direct trains run from Delhi, among them a Vande Bharat from Delhi Cantonment. By road the city sits in the middle of a Rajasthan loop: Pushkar is about 186 km away; Udaipur about 257 km, roughly six hours with a stop at the Jain temple at Ranakpur; and Jaisalmer about 286 km, five to six hours into the desert. On our routes these drives are made in your own car with a driver, as each package lists.
What our Jodhpur tour packages include
All of them are private, with your own vehicle and driver. The Mehrangarh Fort tour adds a government-approved guide through the fort and museum, pick-up from your Jodhpur hotel and help booking entry tickets in advance; Jaswant Thada can be added the same day, and all tickets are paid separately. The longer routes include a local guide in each city and, as each package lists, hotels and daily breakfast. The Royal Rajasthan Circuit names its heritage hotels and covers fuel, tolls and taxes, and the North India Classic Tour includes the flight from Jodhpur to Varanasi, via Delhi.
How to choose your Jodhpur tour package
Already in Jodhpur, or passing through: the Mehrangarh Fort tour, with Jaswant Thada added if you have time. Three cities in six days, with the heritage hotels named in the package: the Royal Rajasthan Circuit. The whole state, with Pushkar, a desert night near Jaisalmer and Udaipur: the Rajasthan Grand Tour, for travellers who don't mind long drives. A once-in-a-while trip across North India, with Delhi, Agra, Varanasi and Rishikesh too: the North India Classic Tour, which flies east from Jodhpur rather than driving. For the state's other routes, see our Rajasthan tour packages.
