    Palace hotels

Palace hotels are former royal residences converted into stays, concentrated mainly in Rajasthan, with Trident Udaipur — the named lakeside stay on our Royal Rajasthan Circuit — a well-known example of the lakeside-palace category specifically. Expect grand architecture and a genuine sense of history, generally at a higher price point than a standard heritage haveli.

    Heritage havelis

Heritage havelis are restored merchant or noble mansions, generally smaller and more intimate than a palace hotel, often set inside a city's old walled quarter. Samode Haveli in Jaipur and RAAS Jodhpur — both named stays on our Royal Rajasthan Circuit — are well-regarded examples of the category done well.

    Houseboats

Kerala's backwater houseboats — traditionally called kettuvallam, originally rice barges — are converted to comfortable overnight stays that cruise the canals and lagoons around Alleppey and Kumarakom, with meals cooked on board and the boat itself, rather than a fixed hotel, as the accommodation.

    Himalayan lodges

Himalayan lodges span a wide range — valley hotels in Kashmir's Pahalgam and Gulmarg, Ladakh's Leh-based hotels and remote lakeside camps at Pangong and Nubra, and hill-station stays across Himachal Pradesh — and the right choice depends heavily on altitude, season and how remote your specific stop is.

    Beach resorts

India's beach resort stays are concentrated in Goa (split sharply between the busier North coast and the quieter South) and Kerala (Varkala's cliffside stays and Kovalam), and the right choice depends more on which stretch of coast suits your pace than on any single property.

    Wildlife lodges

Wildlife lodges sit near a national park's entry gate, and for a safari-based trip like a Ranthambore tiger safari, proximity matters as much as the room itself — a lodge close to the gate means less pre-dawn transfer time before an early-morning safari, when animal activity is often highest.

    Ayurveda resorts

Genuine Ayurveda resorts, concentrated mainly in Kerala, run physician-led treatment programmes prescribed after an on-arrival consultation rather than a menu of spa treatments you pick yourself — the distinction between the real and the packaged is the single most useful thing to understand before booking one.

    Homestays

Homestays put you inside a family's own household rather than a hotel — often with home-cooked meals and direct conversation with your hosts — ranging from village settings that give a genuine window into rural life to heritage city homes run by the same family for generations.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book just a hotel through you, without a tour package?

Generally we build stays into a full itinerary rather than acting as a stand-alone hotel booking agent, though ask us directly if you have a specific case.

Do you quote room rates on these pages?

No — rates depend on season, room category and the specific property, and are confirmed as part of your itinerary quote, not published generically here.

Are the named properties (Samode Haveli, RAAS Jodhpur, Trident Udaipur) available on other itineraries too?

They are contracted specifically for the Royal Rajasthan Circuit; ask us if you'd like them considered for a different itinerary and we will check availability.

Which stay category suits a first-time visitor best?

Palace hotels or heritage havelis for a Rajasthan-focused trip, or a beach resort for a more relaxed introduction — tell us your interests and we'll suggest a fit.

About Where to stay in India

India's most memorable stays are rarely generic hotels — they're former palaces, carved-sandstone havelis, backwater houseboats, Himalayan lodges, beach resorts and wildlife camps, each suited to a different kind of trip. This hub explains what to expect from each category so you can choose the right one for your itinerary, not just the nearest hotel to the sights.

Why the stay is part of the itinerary here

On our Royal Rajasthan Circuit, the hotels are named on the page rather than described only by a star rating — Samode Haveli, RAAS Jodhpur, Trident Udaipur — because a heritage stay in India is often as much a part of the experience as the sightseeing around it. This hub covers the categories worth knowing about before you choose.

The eight categories

  • Palace hotels — former royal residences, mainly Rajasthan and a handful elsewhere.
  • Heritage havelis — restored merchant or noble mansions, generally smaller and more intimate than a palace hotel.
  • Houseboats — traditional Kerala backwater boats converted to overnight stays.
  • Himalayan lodges — mountain-region stays across Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal.
  • Beach resorts — Goa and Kerala's coastal properties.
  • Wildlife lodges — stays near national parks, for safari-based trips.
  • Ayurveda resorts — wellness-focused properties, mainly Kerala, with in-house treatment programmes.
  • Homestays — family-run stays that put you inside a household rather than a hotel.

How to choose

Match the stay to the trip's purpose, not just the destination: a palace hotel or heritage haveli suits a Rajasthan sightseeing trip, a houseboat is the point of a Kerala backwaters trip rather than a base for it, and a wildlife lodge should be judged on proximity to the park gate as much as on the room itself.

What we don't do here

We don't quote room rates on these category pages — pricing depends on season, room category and specific property, and is confirmed as part of your itinerary quote. Where we name a specific property, as with the Royal Rajasthan Circuit's three hotels, it is because we have contracted it directly, not as a general recommendation of every property in a category.

Combining a stay with a tour

If you already know which stay category interests you and want it built into a full itinerary rather than booked alone, see our hotel-and-tour bundles, or tell us directly and we will route a trip around it.
