Frequently asked questions

What happens during a night on a houseboat?

You board after the drive in, and the crew cruises the canals and paddy fields through the afternoon while lunch is cooked on board. In the evening the boat moors on a quiet canal for the night, dinner is cooked on board, and you sleep in a cabin. After breakfast you step off, and your driver takes you on. All three meals are included on board on every dated route listed here.

Can I spend two nights on the backwaters?

Yes. Every trip is tailor-made, and our own routes suggest a simple way: swap a Varkala night for a night at Kumarakom, another backwater base on Vembanad Lake, so you have a night on board and a night by the lake. A second night on the houseboat is possible too. A single night already gives a full afternoon and morning on the water, which suits most travellers.

When is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race?

Every year on Punnamada Lake, part of Vembanad, usually in August, on a date the organisers announce each year. Snake boats over 100 feet long, each with 100 to 150 oarsmen, race a 1.4 km course, and over two lakh spectators line the banks. The race society announces the date each year and sells tickets in advance, so let us know early if you want to watch.

How do I choose a houseboat for my group?

Tell us who is travelling, and the specialist matches the boat: houseboats come with one cabin or several, and their cabin standards vary. Mention small children, since life jackets and a safety talk before boarding are standard, and anyone with limited mobility. Every meal is cooked on board, so tell us about dietary needs when you enquire.

Can high water in the monsoon change a houseboat cruise?

It can. The backwaters stay open through the June to September monsoon and turn a deep green, but after heavy rain the water runs high and some houseboat routes are changed. Alappuzha averages about 580 mm of rain in June alone. If you travel then, keep your dates flexible and expect the route to be decided on the day, by the conditions.

What is Kuttanad, and will I see it?

Kuttanad is the rice country around Alleppey: about 500 sq km of lakes, canals and rivers where rice is farmed below sea level. In reclaimed blocks such as R-Block, fields and homes lie four to ten feet below sea level, protected by dikes. You see it from the houseboat: the cruise on our routes runs through the canals and paddy fields, with village life on the banks.

Is Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram airport closer to Alleppey?

Kochi's. Cochin International Airport is about 83 km from Alleppey, roughly two hours by road, against about 149 km and three and a quarter hours for Thiruvananthapuram's airport. On our routes Alleppey sits mid-trip, so the airport question only arises at either end: the Backwaters and Ayurveda routes fly home from Thiruvananthapuram after Varkala, and the South India tour from Kochi.

Why go to Alleppey

Alleppey, officially Alappuzha, stands on Vembanad, Kerala's largest lake, at the edge of Kuttanad, the farmland known as the rice bowl of Kerala. Its canals, rivers and lagoons were once the region's roads: the kettuvallam, the curved, roofed boat that now carries travellers, was built to move tons of rice and spices, and many villages and islands are still linked by boat. A houseboat lets you watch it at the pace of the boat, from a deck rather than a car. Out on the lake, Pathiramanal island, reached only by boat, draws migratory birds. The town and the backwaters are covered in our Alleppey travel guide.

How many days to give Alleppey

One night, spent on the water, on every route listed here. On the Kerala Backwaters Tour — 7 days you drive down from Munnar on day 4, about four hours, board for an overnight cruise through the canals and paddy fields, and leave after breakfast on day 5 for Varkala. The Kerala Ayurveda Retreat — 10 days comes from Thekkady on day 7, a rest between two treatment stays. On the 10 Days South India Tour Package the houseboat is day 8, followed by Fort Kochi.

When to go

At Alappuzha, IMD's long-term averages put June at about 580 mm of rain and October, at about 350 mm, ahead of September; December to March is the dry season there, at about 20 to 55 mm a month. In the monsoon the canals run high and green, and cruise routes may be altered after heavy rain. Houseboats are in most demand in December and January, so book those weeks early. The snake-boat race season opens with the Nehru Trophy, usually in August, and runs to November. Daytime highs average about 30 to 33°C all year. See best time to visit Kerala.

How to reach Alleppey

Alleppey is 62 km south of Kochi by NH 66; the district administration calls it an hour's drive, and our routes allow about an hour and a half. Cochin International Airport is about 83 km away, roughly two hours by road, and Thiruvananthapuram's airport about 149 km, roughly three and a quarter hours. Alappuzha railway station is less than a kilometre from the beach. Coming from the hills, our itineraries allow about four hours from Munnar; going on to the coast, about three hours to Varkala.

The Kerala family holiday arranges a backwater houseboat cruise too, matched to the family. Lunches and dinners off the boat, flights and insurance are your own.
