Which temples in Odisha can non-Hindus enter?
Not the two best known. Only Hindus may go inside Puri's Jagannath Temple, and Odisha Tourism says the same of Bhubaneswar's Lingaraj Temple, where a viewing platform has been built outside the complex so that others can see its architecture. The Konark Sun Temple is open to visitors of every faith, as are the crafts villages and Chilika. If your group is mixed, the specialist plans darshan for some while the others see Konark or the town.
When is cyclone season on the Odisha coast?
IMD's cyclone centre notes that Bay of Bengal cyclones strike the Odisha and West Bengal coast most often in October, and Bhubaneswar's heaviest day of rain on record, 42.6 cm, fell on 30 October 1999. That does not rule out an autumn trip, because storms are tracked and warned of in advance, but keep a spare day, follow IMD's bulletins, and let the specialist move Konark or Chilika if the weather turns.
Where can I see Irrawaddy dolphins in Odisha?
On the Chilika lagoon. Odisha Tourism names Satapada, where the lagoon opens to the Bay of Bengal, as one of the most reliable places to see these endangered dolphins, and boats run from there out towards the sea mouth. Satapada is about 50 km from Puri, so it makes a day trip. In winter the same lagoon holds huge numbers of migratory birds, which gather at wetlands such as Mangalajodi.
Is the Konark Sun Temple open in the evening?
Yes. Odisha Tourism gives its hours as 6 am to 8 pm, and a light and sound show runs there each evening: from 7.30 to 8.20 pm between March and November, and from 6.30 to 7.20 pm from December to February. Konark is about 35 km from Puri, so the show can close a day trip, with the drive back to Puri afterwards.
When is the Konark Festival?
From 1 to 5 December every year, according to Odisha Tourism. For five evenings, dancers perform Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam and Manipuri against the floodlit Sun Temple, and the International Sand Art Festival takes place nearby on Chandrabhaga Beach. The cool, dry weather of early December suits a trip that combines the festival with Puri and Bhubaneswar.
Where can I buy Odisha's traditional crafts?
At the villages that make them. In Raghurajpur, 14 km from Puri, nearly every household paints Pattachitra or works in palm leaf, stone, wood or masks. Pipili, on the road between Bhubaneswar and Puri, is known for its appliqué, which holds a Geographical Indication, and its shops sell canopies, umbrellas and wall hangings. Each winter Bhubaneswar also hosts the Toshali National Crafts Mela, with craftspeople from across India.
About Odisha Tour Packages
Our Odisha tour package is a private trip to Puri's Jagannath Temple, with Konark's 13th-century Sun Temple as an optional day out, for pilgrims and for travellers who want Odisha's great temples with their own guide and car. A specialist can extend it to Bhubaneswar, Chilika Lake or the crafts villages near Puri, tailor-made and confirmed with a written quote before you pay.

Why go to Odisha
Odisha keeps its best-known monuments within a short drive of one another on the Bay of Bengal. Puri's Jagannath Temple dates from the 12th century. At Konark, the 13th-century Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, was built as the chariot of Surya, with 24 carved stone wheels drawn by seven horses; its main tower was razed in the 19th century, and the great audience hall now dominates the ruins. Bhubaneswar, which Odisha Tourism calls the Temple City, has the 11th-century Lingaraj Temple, and on its twin hills Jain monks' caves cut in the 2nd century BCE. On the Chilika lagoon, Irrawaddy dolphins surface near Satapada. More in our Odisha travel guide.
How many days to give Odisha
The tour listed here is a Puri visit of a day or two, depending on whether you take its optional day out to Konark. To see more of the coast, allow three or four days in all: Puri and Konark first, then Bhubaneswar, 60 km from Puri, for its temples and caves before you fly out. Chilika wants most of a day of its own, as Satapada, where the boats leave for the dolphins, is about 50 km from Puri. One more day takes in the crafts villages near Puri. The temple town in detail: our Puri tour packages page.
When to go
Odisha Tourism calls October to March the main season, dry and pleasant, with temperatures of roughly 10°C to 27°C, and winter is when thousands of migratory birds arrive at Chilika. From March to June the heat builds, often past 40°C by Odisha Tourism's account, and the coastal plain stays humid all year: IMD's average May maximum for Bhubaneswar is about 37°C. Three quarters of Bhubaneswar's rain falls between June and September. October needs care, as it is the month when Bay of Bengal cyclones most often reach the Odisha coast. Month by month: best time to visit India.
How to reach Odisha
Most visitors arrive in Bhubaneswar. Biju Patnaik International Airport, about 6 km from the city centre, has flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Raipur, among others, and the city's railway station has express trains from as far as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Guwahati. By road, National Highway 16 links the state with Kolkata to the north and Visakhapatnam and Chennai to the south. Puri is 60 km from Bhubaneswar and has its own station; from there the tour's private car and driver take over. More on the capital in our Bhubaneswar travel guide.
What the Odisha tour package includes
What you book is a private day or two in Puri with a vehicle and a knowledgeable guide, and the specialist checks the Jagannath Temple's current entry rules before your plan is fixed, so nobody in your group arrives expecting to go inside and is turned away. Konark can be added as a day trip. Offerings, extra meals and whatever your quote does not list are paid for separately. Days you add in Bhubaneswar or at Chilika, with a car and driver, hotels and a boat on the lagoon, are set out in the same written quote, and the whole trip carries the company's usual promise: cancel no later than 24 hours before it begins and you are refunded in full.
How your Odisha trip is tailored
Begin with what draws you. Pilgrims build the trip around darshan in Puri and can add Bhubaneswar's Lingaraj Temple. Lovers of architecture give Konark a full day and see Bhubaneswar's older temples and caves. For art, add Raghurajpur, 14 km from Puri, India's first heritage crafts village, and Pipili's appliqué shops on the Bhubaneswar road. For birds and dolphins, give Chilika a winter day. Early December brings the Konark Festival of classical dance. The specialist puts your choices in a sensible order around your dates, so you do not double back along the coast.
