What is the sound and light show at Mysore Palace?
A 45-minute show telling some 400 years of Mysuru's history, held every evening except Sundays and government holidays, when the palace is lit instead. The Palace Board lists Kannada narration from Monday to Wednesday at 7 pm and on Saturday at 8.15 pm, and English from Thursday to Saturday at 7 pm. Tickets are sold only at the Varaha Gate counter, from 6.30 pm, and the show ends with about 15 minutes of the palace lit up.
When is Mysore Palace least crowded?
On weekday mornings, just after it opens at 10 am, Karnataka Tourism advises. Sunday and holiday evenings draw crowds for the illumination, and Dasara, ten days in September or October, brings the largest crowds of the year. The palace stays open until 5.30 pm, with last entry at 5 pm by Karnataka Tourism's count. We time the tour for you: early on a weekday for the quietest rooms, or on a Sunday or holiday if you want the lights as well.
Do I need to book Mysore Palace tickets in advance?
You can buy them at the palace, where the Palace Board issues entrance tickets from 10 am to 5.30 pm, and Karnataka Tourism also links to online booking. Help booking entry tickets ahead is part of our Mysore Palace tour, and the ticket's cost is set out in your quote. Dasara is different: the Palace Board's notices have limited entry to Dasara pass holders on the main festival day and closed the palace for rituals, so we check that year's notice first.
What is the Jumbo Savari?
The great procession of Mysuru Dasara. Karnataka Tourism describes the Golden Howdah, about 750 kg with 80 kg of gold over a carved wooden frame, carrying the idol of the goddess Chamundeshwari through the city's streets. The district administration lists the procession, a torchlight parade and fireworks at Banni Mantap among the festival's chief events, with the palace lit and an exhibition at the Doddakere grounds. Expect very large crowds; tell us early if you want to plan around it.
Can wheelchair users visit Mysore Palace?
The Palace Board lends wheelchairs free of charge, along with umbrellas against sun or rain, and offers a Braille guide for visitors with impaired sight. Part of the visit is upstairs, where the Public Durbar Hall opens onto a colonnade, so tell your specialist about any mobility needs before you travel, and we will plan the visit, the car and the timing around them. Our accessible travel guide has wider advice for India.
What can we add to a day at the palace?
In the city, Karnataka Tourism suggests the Jaganmohan Palace, built in 1861 and now an art gallery, and the Devaraja Market for flowers, incense, sandalwood and spices; St Philomena's Cathedral, modelled on Cologne's, is close by. Above the city, the Chamundeshwari temple crowns the Chamundi Hills: drive up, or climb the 1,008 steps. Further out, the district administration lists the Brindavan Gardens at the KRS dam, the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary and the Shivanasamudra falls. A specialist can add any of these to your stay.

Why go to Mysore
Mysuru, still widely called Mysore, was the capital of the Wadiyar (Wodeyar) kings, and its palace is one of the most visited monuments in India: Karnataka Tourism counts over six million visitors a year. The present building, the fourth on the site, was designed by the British architect Henry Irwin after fire destroyed the old palace in 1897, and finished in 1912: three storeys in the Indo-Saracenic style, mixing Hindu, Islamic, Rajput and Gothic forms. The city lies at the foot of the Chamundi Hills, about 140 km south-west of Bengaluru, and is known for silk, sandalwood and Dasara, which Karnataka celebrates as its state festival. More in our Mysore travel guide.
How many days to give Mysore
The Mysore Palace tour takes about two hours with a guide, longer if you stay on for the lights, so it fits easily into one day. Karnataka Tourism suggests three days for Mysuru as a whole: the palace first thing, when it is calmest, then the Jaganmohan Palace art gallery and the Devaraja Market; Chamundi Hills and the Brindavan Gardens on the second day; and the island town of Srirangapatna and the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary on the third. Stay at least one night if you want to see the palace lit; the tour's car collects you from your Mysuru hotel and brings you back.
When to go
Karnataka Tourism treats Mysuru as a year-round city: at about 770 m it stays milder than the plains. IMD's normal date for the south-west monsoon to reach Mysuru is 3 June, and Karnataka Tourism points to November to February, the cooler months, for a quieter visit. Dasara fills the city for ten days in September or October, when the palace is lit every evening for about two hours and the golden howdah leads the Jumbo Savari procession; crowds are at their largest then. The palace also closes to visitors for some hours, or whole days, for royal rituals at Dasara, and the Palace Board posts those dates each year.
How to reach Mysore
The nearest international airport is Bengaluru's Kempegowda International, Karnataka's main air hub, which the Mysuru district administration puts about 170 km away; Mysuru also has a domestic airport at Mandakalli, about 10 km out. Express and passenger trains run between Bengaluru and Mysuru Junction, about 2 km from the city centre. By road, the 118 km Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway, opened in 2023, was built to cut the journey to about 75 minutes, though Bengaluru's own traffic adds time at either end. Our Bengaluru travel guide covers the city you are likely to start from.
What our Mysore tour package includes
A private guide through the palace, from its gates and the walk around the outside to the Durbar Hall and the Kalyana Mandapa, the octagonal marriage pavilion under a stained-glass ceiling; a private vehicle to and from your Mysuru hotel; help with booking your tickets ahead; and advice on timing your visit around the illumination and any Dasara crowds. Not included: the palace ticket itself, whose cost is set out in your quote, any camera fee charged on the day, and personal expenses. A hotel, if you want us to arrange one, goes into the same written quote.
Who our Mysore tour package suits
Travellers spending a night or more in Mysuru who want the palace explained rather than just walked through, and anyone who needs the day to be easy: the Palace Board lends wheelchairs and umbrellas free and runs a free footwear stand, since shoes come off before you go in. If you only have a day from Bengaluru, our Mysore day trip from Bengaluru, one of our Karnataka tour packages, is built for that. For a longer route, Mysuru pairs with our Hampi ruins tour or the coffee hills of Coorg.
