All of KeralaFrequently asked questions
What is the Varkala cliff made of?
Laterite, the red rock that gives the cliff its colour. The Geological Survey of India has declared the rock sequence exposed here, the Varkala Formation, a geological monument, and its unusual geology still draws geologists. Natural springs run from the cliff face, and people bathe in them, believing the water has medicinal qualities. A path runs along the top of the cliff, with steps down to the beach.
Is Varkala a pilgrim town as well as a beach?
Yes. Papanasam, the beach below the cliff, is believed to wash away sins, and the Janardhana Swamy temple, said to have a history of some 2,000 years, stands on a hill at the start of the beach road, facing it. About 3 km from town is the Sivagiri Mutt, where Sree Narayana Guru built a hermitage in 1904; its pilgrimage, from 30 December to 1 January, draws thousands. Dress modestly at both.
Can I have Ayurveda treatments at Varkala?
Yes. On the Kerala Ayurveda Retreat, a consultation with the resort's physician on day 8 starts a programme that continues on day 9, following on from Thekkady; the physician confirms the treatments and their cost, paid directly at the resort. On the Kerala Backwaters Tour, a treatment on the free day is optional and booked locally. Medical questions belong with the physician: we arrange the travel, not the treatment.
How early should I leave Varkala for a flight?
Allow about an hour for the drive to Thiruvananthapuram's airport, as our itineraries do, plus time for traffic and check-in; for an early-morning flight that can mean leaving before dawn. If your flight leaves from Kochi instead, the drive is far longer, so we suggest flying out of Thiruvananthapuram, as our Varkala routes do, or ending with a night closer to Kochi.
Can I add Kovalam or more beach nights?
Yes. Our planning advice is two to four nights on the coast, so a third or fourth night at Varkala is easy to add, or you can split the coast with Kovalam, near Thiruvananthapuram, which our Kovalam guide compares with Varkala. Families travelling with small children can start from the Kerala family holiday, which builds its beach time around Kovalam or Varkala.
What happens to the beach in the monsoon?
From June the sea turns rough and erosion eats into the beach below the cliff; Kerala Tourism notes that erosion and heavy rain mean fewer visitors in the monsoon, and swimming is often unwise. Some travellers choose these months for Ayurveda, since practitioners recommend some treatments, such as panchakarma, in the monsoon. For beach days, December to March is the driest stretch.
About Varkala Tour Packages
Our private Varkala trips end a Kerala journey slowly, on the beach below the red cliff: two nights after the backwaters on the Kerala Backwaters Tour, with a free day for the sea and the sunset, or two nights of resort Ayurveda to close the Kerala Ayurveda Retreat. Each is tailor-made around your dates, budget and group, and quoted in writing before you pay.

Why go to Varkala
Varkala is the only beach in southern Kerala where cliffs stand right beside the Arabian Sea. The cliffs are laterite, red and steep, with springs running from their face, and their wide top holds the hotels, cafes and shops, so many rooms and tables look straight out to sea. Steps lead down to Papanasam beach below. The town is a pilgrim centre too, with the Janardhana Swamy temple and the Sivagiri Mutt, and it stays quieter than Kovalam. After the hills and the backwaters, it is a place to stop moving. Read more in our Varkala travel guide.
How many days to give Varkala
Two nights, at the end of each route listed here. On the Kerala Backwaters Tour — 7 days you arrive from the Alleppey houseboat on day 5, about three hours' drive, and spend the afternoon on the cliff; day 6 is free for the beach, a walk along the cliff-top shops, an optional Ayurveda treatment and the sunset; day 7 is the airport. On the Kerala Ayurveda Retreat — 10 days, Varkala is the second treatment stay: consultation and treatment from day 8, with an afternoon at the cliff and beach on day 9.
When to go
Varkala is in Thiruvananthapuram district, where IMD's long-term averages make December to March the dry months, at about 20 to 65 mm of rain a month. June is the wettest month at about 300 mm, but October, at about 280 mm, is nearly as wet, and November brings about 200 mm. In the monsoon the sea is rough and eats into the shore, so visitors are fewer and swimming is often unwise. Average daytime maximums stay between about 30 and 33°C. Our Varkala routes suggest November to February; see also best time to visit Kerala.
How to reach Varkala
Varkala is linked by road and rail to Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, and has its own railway station on that line. The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram's international airport, to the south: our itineraries allow about an hour for the transfer, more in traffic, which is why our Varkala routes fly home from there rather than from Kochi. Coming down the coast from the backwaters, our routes allow about three hours by road from Alleppey. On the cliff itself, everything is within walking distance or a short auto-rickshaw ride.
What our Varkala tour packages include
On the Kerala Backwaters Tour: a hotel confirmed at enquiry, daily breakfast, your private car and driver, and the transfer to Thiruvananthapuram's airport on day 7; Ayurveda treatments on the free day are optional and booked locally. On the Kerala Ayurveda Retreat: a resort with Ayurveda facilities, confirmed at enquiry, daily breakfast and the airport transfer on day 10; the treatment fees are set by the resort's physician after a consultation and paid at the resort. Lunches, dinners, flights and travel insurance are extra on each.
How to choose your Varkala tour package
Choose the Kerala Backwaters Tour if Varkala is the reward at the end of a sightseeing week: one free day for the beach, the cliff and the sunset, with a treatment only if you want one. Choose the Kerala Ayurveda Retreat if the coast is for a treatment programme: the days are quieter, the resort is chosen for its Ayurveda, and Varkala continues what began at Thekkady. For more beach time, a stay split with Kovalam or small children on the coast, ask for a tailor-made trip; families can start from the Kerala family holiday. All our routes: Kerala tour packages.
