India Visa for Italian Citizens: e-Visa, Fees and Applying from Italy

Italian citizens need a visa for India; the visa on arrival is limited to Japanese, South Korean and some UAE nationals. Most Italians apply online for an e-Visa: US$25 for a 30-day e-Tourist Visa (US$10 in April to June), US$40 for one year or US$200 for five, plus 3%. For a regular visa, northern Italy applies through the Consulate General of India in Milan.

An Italian passport needs a visa in advance

Italy is on India's e-Visa list but not on its visa-on-arrival list, which names only Japan, South Korea and, on conditions, the UAE. So an Italian arrives with the visa already granted, and for almost every holiday that means the e-Tourist Visa, applied for online.

The e-Tourist Visa covers recreation and sightseeing, visits to friends and relatives, a short yoga programme, short unstructured courses (local languages, music, dance, arts and crafts, cooking and the like) of up to six months with no certificate, and up to a month of unpaid voluntary work. Business trips need the e-Business Visa and treatment the e-Medical Visa. Employment, journalism and NGO work are outside every e-Visa and need a regular visa.

What the e-Visa costs on an Italian passport

The official e-Tourist fee table, dated 8 September 2026, lists Italy at the rates below, in US dollars, with a 3% bank charge added to every payment. The fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.

CriteriaItalyValid forEntries and stay
30 daysUS$10 (April to June) or US$25 (July to March)30 days from first arrivalMultiple entries within the 30 days
1 yearUS$40365 days from grantMultiple; up to 180 days in India in a calendar year
5 yearsUS$2005 years from grantMultiple; up to 180 days in India in a calendar year

Every European Union passport pays these same e-Tourist rates. The e-Business Visa is where EU countries differ: the portal's second table lists US$120 for Italy, as for Germany, against US$165 for France. The e-Medical Visa is US$80. No e-Visa can be extended or converted into another visa once you are in India.

Getting the e-Visa right the first time

Because the fee is not refunded on a refusal, the details matter:

  • Apply only on indianvisaonline.gov.in, at least four days before you arrive and no more than 120 days before you travel.
  • Use a passport with six months' validity on the day you apply and two blank pages.
  • Scan the passport's photo page as a PDF of 10 KB to 300 KB, and upload a JPEG photo of 10 KB to 1 MB on a plain light or white background.
  • Pay the fee plus 3%, and wait for the email saying the visa has been granted before you travel.
  • Carry a copy of the Electronic Travel Authorisation, a return or onward ticket and enough money for your stay.

Our India e-Visa guide covers the form in order, and our visa assistance page explains what we can check for you before you pay.

Regular visas: the Consulate General in Milan

The Consulate General of India in Milan handles visa applications from foreign nationals living in Lombardy, Piedmont, the Aosta Valley, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Liguria and Emilia-Romagna. Fill in the online form on indianvisaonline.gov.in first, and book an appointment online if you are going to the Consulate. For a regular tourist visa the Consulate's checklist asks for the original passport and a clear copy, your carta d'identità and a copy, a copy of your air ticket, proof of accommodation in India and a 50 mm by 50 mm photo on a white background. Its pages describe both handing the application in at the visa counter and sending it by DHL courier, so check the current instructions on the Consulate's site before you post a passport. If you live elsewhere in Italy, contact the Embassy of India in Rome.

Where an e-Visa lets you in

An e-Visa is valid for entry only at the airports and seaports the portal designates, 37 airports among them, from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru to Goa, Kochi, Jaipur and Varanasi. You can leave through any immigration check post. Immigration records your biometric details on arrival, and in the 72 hours before landing every foreign national must submit the free e-Arrival Card, which is an arrival record, not a visa. Once that is done, First time in India covers what the first days are like.

Frequently asked questions

Do Italians need to show their carta d'identità for a regular Indian visa?

For a regular tourist visa through the Consulate General in Milan, yes: its checklist asks for the original carta d'identità and a clear copy, with the original passport and a copy, a copy of the air ticket, proof of accommodation in India and a 50 mm square photo on a white background. The e-Visa asks for none of this: only scans of the passport page and a photo.

Do all EU passports pay the same Indian e-Visa fees?

For the e-Tourist Visa, yes. The fee table of 8 September 2026 lists every EU member state at US$10 or US$25 for 30 days, US$40 for one year and US$200 for five. The e-Business Visa varies: US$120 for Italy and most EU countries, US$145 for Poland, US$165 for France, US$190 for the Czech Republic and US$200 for Ireland, each plus 3%.

Can I enter India overland from Nepal on an e-Visa?

No. The portal's FAQ is direct: e-Visa holders can only enter through the designated airports and seaports, not at a land border. If you plan to cross from Nepal by road, ask the Indian mission that issues regular visas which visa lets you enter at your crossing, or fly into a designated airport instead. Leaving is easier: e-Visa holders may depart through any Indian immigration check post.

Does a month of volunteering fit the e-Tourist Visa?

It can. The portal lists voluntary work of short duration as an e-Tourist purpose, for at most one month and without any payment or other consideration in return; for such work it asks for a letter from the organisation. Longer placements, or any that pay you, need a different visa, and the e-Visa never covers employment or NGO activities.

Do some parts of India need a permit as well as a visa?

Yes. The portal states that the e-Visa is not valid for visiting Protected, Restricted or Cantonment Areas, which need prior permission from the civil authority. If your route goes near a border or to a remote region, check before you book whether it falls in such an area, and apply for the permit as well as the visa.

Is the 30-day e-Tourist Visa cheaper in spring?

The official table lists two prices for it: US$10 for April to June and US$25 for July to March, plus 3%. It does not say whether the months refer to when you apply or when you travel, so check the fee the portal shows before you pay. The 1-year and 5-year e-Tourist Visas cost the same all year.
