When are the Char Dham temples open?
From late April or May until October or November. The temple authorities fix the dates each year: in 2026 Kedarnath opened on 22 April and Badrinath on 23 April, and in 2025 the closing dates fell between 22 October (Gangotri) and 25 November (Badrinath). The temples close for winter, not for the monsoon. We confirm the year's dates on your written quote before you book flights.
Do I need to register for the Char Dham Yatra?
Yes. Under the Uttarakhand government's travel policy, every pilgrim and every vehicle must be registered before the journey starts, on the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board's official portal or app, and you are verified again at each temple. The Char Dham Yatra — 11 days includes the registration formalities, as the package lists.
Do I have to walk to Kedarnath?
No. Kedarnath, at about 3,580 metres, is an uphill walk of about 16 to 18 km from Gaurikund, where the road ends. Ponies and palanquins carry pilgrims who cannot walk it, and helicopters fly up from helipads lower in the valley; Kedarnath helicopter tickets are sold only on the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal. Pony, palanquin and helicopter charges are paid separately from our packages.
How fit do I need to be for the Char Dham Yatra?
Reasonably fit. Expect long mountain drives, cold nights, temples above 3,000 metres, and walks of about 5 to 6 km each way to Yamunotri and 16 to 18 km to Kedarnath. Older travellers and anyone with a heart, lung or joint condition should see a doctor before booking. Ponies and palanquins shorten the walks, and Helicopter Char Dham cuts out most of the road travel and the long treks.
Is it safe to travel in Uttarakhand during the monsoon?
Haridwar and Rishikesh stay workable, but the mountains carry more risk. From late June to September heavy rain brings landslides that block roads, and the authorities pause the yatra on rain alerts, as they did in June 2025. Many pilgrims travel in May and June or in September and October instead, so those are the busiest weeks. If you travel in the monsoon, we build in spare days where possible, and support is available 24/7 during the trip.
How far apart are Haridwar and Rishikesh?
About 20 to 25 km, under an hour by road, so it is easy to stay in one and visit the other. The Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri ghat in Haridwar is held at dusk every day. Our Haridwar day trip from Rishikesh is timed for it, with a private guide and vehicle, and takes four to five hours including the drive.
What should I wear, and can I take photos at the temples?
Dress modestly at temples and ghats, and expect to take your shoes off before entering a temple. Keep the camera for the valleys and the walk in: phones and cameras have been restricted at all four Char Dham temples in recent seasons, and in 2024 the state barred phone use within 200 metres of them. The rules are set each season, so follow the signs and the temple staff.
What can I combine Uttarakhand with?
Our tours already pair it with Mathura and Vrindavan on the 8-day Kedarnath tour, with Varanasi on Spiritual India, and with Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan and Varanasi on the North India Classic. For trips built around those places, see Mathura Vrindavan tour packages, Varanasi tour packages and Multi-State India Tours.
About Uttarakhand Tour Packages
Our private Uttarakhand trips are for pilgrims and first-time visitors bound for Haridwar and Rishikesh on the Ganga, or for the four Char Dham temples. We run the Char Dham Yatra by road or helicopter, Kedarnath with Mathura and Vrindavan, a Haridwar evening from Rishikesh, and India tours ending in Rishikesh. Each is tailor-made around your dates, budget and group, and quoted in writing before you pay.

Why go to Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand is where the Ganga leaves the Himalaya for the plains, and travel here splits into two halves. Haridwar and Rishikesh, about 20 to 25 km apart on the river, are the easier half: the Ganga Aarti at Haridwar's Har Ki Pauri ghat, held at dusk every day, and the ashrams, yoga classes and riverside walks of Rishikesh. The other half is the Char Dham Yatra, the pilgrimage to four temples high in the Garhwal Himalaya: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, all above 3,000 metres. Our Char Dham Yatra tour packages and Rishikesh tour packages list the trips for each.
How many days to give Uttarakhand
It depends on which half you choose. The Haridwar day trip from Rishikesh takes four to five hours. The North India Classic Tour — 14 days ends with two nights in Rishikesh, and Spiritual India — Varanasi and Rishikesh, 8 days gives Rishikesh most of the week. All four Char Dham temples take about 9 to 12 days by road on the Char Dham Yatra tour, 11 on the Char Dham Yatra — 11 days, and typically three to five by Helicopter Char Dham. The 8 Days Mathura Vrindavan Kedarnath Haridwar Rishikesh Tour spends six of its seven nights in Uttarakhand.
When to go
October to March is the comfortable season for Haridwar and Rishikesh, though winter nights are cold; by May, Dehradun averages about 35°C by day. The monsoon reaches Uttarakhand in the second half of June and normally withdraws by the end of September. July and August are the wettest months, when landslides can close hill roads and pause the yatra. The Char Dham temples open in late April or May and close for winter in October or November, on dates announced each year. Our Uttarakhand travel guide covers the seasons and the main places.
How to reach Uttarakhand
Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport has daily flights from Delhi of about an hour, and sits 21 km from Rishikesh and 37 km from Haridwar. Haridwar and Rishikesh both have railway stations, and some trains from Delhi reach Haridwar in under five hours. By road, allow roughly four to six hours from Delhi, depending on route and traffic. For the Char Dham, Rishikesh is the usual gateway: the state tourism board puts Gangotri about 230 km and Badrinath about 297 km from it by road, each a long day's drive or more.
What our Uttarakhand tour packages include
Every road trip here comes with a private vehicle and driver; beyond that, inclusions differ, as each package lists. The Char Dham Yatra — 11 days adds hotel and guesthouse stays, daily breakfast and the registration formalities; the 8-day Kedarnath tour adds Ganga Aarti seating in Haridwar and Rishikesh; Spiritual India includes a rafting run and a yoga class; the North India Classic includes its domestic flights. Helicopter Char Dham covers booking through licensed operators, ground transfers and guide support, not the fare itself. Pony, palanquin and helicopter charges at Kedarnath are paid separately.
How to choose your Uttarakhand tour package
For a private yatra built around your dates and the temples you want, start with the Char Dham Yatra tour. Fit for the walks to Yamunotri and Kedarnath and happy with a set route: the Char Dham Yatra — 11 days. Short of time, older, or unable to manage the treks: Helicopter Char Dham. Fit pilgrims who also want Mathura and Vrindavan: the 8-day Kedarnath tour. Staying in Rishikesh for yoga or rafting: the Haridwar day trip. Drawn to ritual and yoga alike: Spiritual India. A long first trip to North India: the North India Classic.
