Kerala tourist places for a one-day trip
With a single day in Kerala, stay close to your base rather than chase the whole state: an Alleppey backwater cruise from Kochi, a half-day walking Fort Kochi's old town, or a short hop up to the Periyar hills near Thekkady are all realistic. Munnar and Wayanad are worth a full day each but are a long drive from Kochi, so plan around your actual base.

- Fort Kochi's old town — Chinese fishing nets, the Dutch Palace, Jew Town — a good half-day walk.
- A short backwater cruise from Kochi's own backwaters, no need to travel to Alleppey for a taste of it.
- Cherai Beach, about an hour from the city, for a half-day beach stop.
- A day houseboat cruise, or a shorter canoe/shikara ride through the narrower backwater canals — no overnight needed to get the postcard view.
- Marari Beach, a short drive away, for a quieter beach half-day.
- Munnar's tea estates — but it's roughly 4 hours' drive from Kochi each way, so this really needs its own day and an early start, not a bolt-on.
- Thekkady/Periyar for a spice-plantation walk and a boat safari on Periyar Lake, similarly a longer drive.
Munnar and Alleppey together in a single day from Kochi is not realistic given the drive times — pick one region per day rather than trying to compress Kerala's geography. A local guide can tell you honestly what fits your actual base and dates.
Exact drive times vary with traffic and season; treat the hours above as a planning guide, not a guarantee, and confirm your specific route with your specialist before booking.
Can I visit Alleppey and Munnar in one day?
No — pick one region per day; the drive times don't allow both.
What can I see in Kochi in half a day?
Fort Kochi's old town — the Chinese fishing nets, Dutch Palace and Jew Town.
Is a day houseboat cruise worth it?
Yes, if you don't have time for an overnight stay on the backwaters.
How far is Munnar from Kochi?
Roughly 4 hours by road.

5/51 week agoWe have used a lot of tour companies over the years and this was among the best organised. Every hotel was as described, every transfer on time, and one phone call fixed the single hiccup within minutes.

4/51 month agoA smooth, well-thought-out trip. The hotels were lovely, the driving was long some days, and one stretch of road was tiring — but they warned us about that, and the stops along the way made it bearable.

5/52 months agoSunrise start was worth the alarm. We were through the gates before the crowds and had almost twenty minutes with the place nearly to ourselves. The driver was waiting exactly where he said he would be.

5/53 months agoOur guide grew up in the old town and it showed. We got the version of the city locals see, not the coach-tour one. He also found us a wonderful sweet shop that has ruined all other sweets for me.
