Manali–Leh highway: the classic high-altitude drive
Tour packageManali–Leh Highway
The Manali-Leh highway links Himachal Pradesh's Manali to Ladakh's capital Leh over a series of high passes, including Rohtang La and Baralacha La, and is genuinely one of the great high-altitude road journeys in the world. It is open in summer only, closed by snow the rest of the year, and gains altitude faster than the alternative Srinagar-Leh road, so it needs extra acclimatisation built in rather than a straight two-day dash.

Itinerary
Day 1 — Start from Manali
Step 1
- Depart Manali and climb through pine forest towards Rohtang La, the first of the route's high passes.
Day 2 — Over Baralacha La to Sarchu
Step 2
- Cross Baralacha La and the high Moray Plains to an overnight stop at Sarchu, a deliberate break in the ascent rather than a push straight through.
Day 3 — On to Leh
Step 3
- Continue over the remaining high passes and descend into Leh, arriving with the rest of the day free — and no sightseeing, deliberately, on arrival day.
Day 4 — Rest in Leh
Step 4
- A full rest day in Leh before any further ascent, the same mandatory rule that applies to every Ladakh itinerary regardless of how you arrived.

Highlights
- Travellers who want the road itself as part of the trip, not just a means of getting to Leh — this suits keen road-trippers, photographers and anyone who finds a long, spectacular drive more appealing than a short flight.
- The Manali-Leh highway is the higher, harder of Ladakh's two overland approaches — the other being the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh road — and one of the classic high-altitude drives anywhere in the world.
- Facilities along the route are basic; expect simple highway-stop accommodation at Sarchu or Pang rather than hotels.
- Drink far more water than feels natural, go easy on alcohol, and talk to your doctor about altitude medication before you travel.

Who it suits
- It suits travellers already comfortable with a multi-day overland journey and basic highway-stop accommodation at Sarchu or Pang, in exchange for one of India's genuinely great road journeys.
- Travellers who want the road itself as part of the trip, not just a means of getting to Leh — this suits keen road-trippers, photographers and anyone who finds a long, spectacular drive more appealing than a short flight. It is not for anyone in a hurry, or anyone who should avoid rapid altitude gain; the climb from Manali to the high passes happens over a single long day, which is precisely why we do not recommend racing it.
Honest cautions
- This route gains altitude faster than flying into Leh with a proper rest day, and faster than the Srinagar road, so we build in an overnight break at Sarchu rather than attempting it in a single push, plus a full rest day in Leh once you arrive.
- The road is open in summer only — typically from around mid-June to mid-October, though this varies year to year with snowfall — and can close temporarily even within that window after heavy rain or an early snowfall, so we build in buffer time.
- Drink far more water than feels natural, go easy on alcohol, and talk to your doctor about altitude medication before you travel.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the Manali-Leh drive take?
We run it over two to three days with an overnight break at Sarchu, rather than attempting it in a single long day, which is both safer for altitude and far more comfortable.
When is the Manali-Leh highway open?
Broadly mid-June to mid-October, though this shifts year to year with snowfall on the high passes. It is closed to normal traffic for the rest of the year.
Is the Manali-Leh road more dangerous for altitude sickness than flying?
It gains height faster than a controlled flight-plus-rest-day arrival, which is exactly why we break the drive with an overnight stop and still build in a full rest day in Leh on arrival, rather than treating the drive itself as the acclimatisation.
Can I self-drive the Manali-Leh highway?
We run this route with a private vehicle and an experienced local driver rather than self-drive; the road conditions, altitude and remoteness make a professional driver who knows the route the safer and more comfortable choice.
Should I choose the Manali or Srinagar road into Ladakh?
Manali-Leh is the higher, harder and more dramatic of the two; Srinagar-Leh gains altitude somewhat more gradually and pairs naturally with a Kashmir trip. Many travellers combine both, flying one way.
