About Dharamshala
Dharamshala, and specifically the hillside neighbourhood of McLeod Ganj above it, has been the seat of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile since 1959, and the town carries that Tibetan Buddhist character through its monasteries, prayer wheels, Tibetan restaurants and the Dalai Lama's own temple complex. It sits below the Dhauladhar range, and the mountain backdrop is as much a part of the appeal as the culture.
Namgyal Monastery
The Dalai Lama's own monastery and temple complex in McLeod Ganj.
Bhagsu Waterfall
A short walk from McLeod Ganj, popular for an easy half-day out.
Triund
A day-hike or overnight trek up into the Dhauladhar foothills, with wide mountain views.
Best time to visit, and how many days
March to June and September to November suit Dharamshala, with clear mountain views most likely in autumn. Monsoon months bring heavy rain to this side of the Himalaya. Two to three days covers McLeod Ganj's monasteries and a walk to Bhagsu Falls or partway up to Triund.
