What should I know before darshan at Banke Bihari?
The temple opens every day for a morning and an evening session, with hours that change between summer and winter, and the deity is seen in short glimpses as a curtain is drawn and opened. There is no VIP darshan, and phones, umbrellas, leather and electronic items should be left behind. The temple asks elderly devotees, families with small children and people with disabilities to avoid its busiest days: weekends, public holidays, Ekadashi, full-moon and new-moon days, and festivals.
What happens at Lathmar Holi, and can I watch it?
At Barsana, Radha's town, the women playfully beat the men of Krishna's Nandgaon with lathis, long sticks, while the men shield themselves; the next day it is Nandgaon's turn. It falls on Phalgun Shukla Navami, about a week before Holi, so the date moves each year with the Hindu calendar. Visitors can watch, but crowds are dense and traffic is slow, so start early, wear clothes you can lose to colour and leave valuables at the hotel.
How long is the Govardhan parikrama, and must I walk all of it?
The parikrama circles Govardhan hill, a sandstone ridge about 8 km long, on a route of about 21 km that devout pilgrims walk in full. You don't have to: you can walk part of it and reach places such as the Mansi Ganga tank by car. The 2-day Braj package spends a morning at Govardhan. Avoid Guru Purnima in July, when the authorities plan for well over a crore of pilgrims at the Mudiya Purnima fair.
What should I expect at Krishna Janmabhoomi?
Close security. Phones, key rings, watches and other electronic devices are not allowed inside the Shri Krishna Janmasthan complex, so leave them in the car with your driver. Shoes come off before the shrines, and the checks at the gate take time on busy days. Our itineraries put it first, on the day you arrive, before Vrindavan's temples.
Can elderly parents manage Vrindavan's temples?
Yes, with planning. Banke Bihari offers free assisted darshan for elderly and disabled devotees through its sewa adhikari goswamis, with requests confirmed at least 48 hours ahead, and wheelchairs can be hired near Sneh Bihari Mandir. Choose a weekday that is not a festival or Ekadashi. Tell us about any mobility needs when you enquire, and we build the day around them.
Is Janmashtami a good time to visit?
Only if the festival is the point. Krishna's birthday is celebrated at midnight, when the image of the infant Krishna is bathed, and Banke Bihari holds its only mangla aarti of the year in the early hours. Mathura fills with lakhs of devotees and traffic is restricted, so expect long queues. It falls in August or September; the date moves each year. For calmer temples, come between October and March.
About Mathura & Vrindavan Tour Packages
Our private Mathura and Vrindavan trips take pilgrims and first-time visitors through Krishna's Braj, timed to its temples' darshan hours. Why go to Mathura and Vrindavan
Braj, the country around Mathura on the Yamuna, is where Hindu tradition sets Krishna's early life, and its holy towns lie close together. Mathura has his birthplace, the Shri Krishna Janmasthan temple complex. Vrindavan, 15 km away, is where he grew up; its temples include Banke Bihari, ISKCON's Krishna-Balaram Mandir, the society's first temple, and the modern marble Prem Mandir. Gokul, where he is said to have been raised in hiding, is across the river. Govardhan, to the west, is the hill he is said to have lifted; Barsana, Radha's home, lies further north-west, with Nandgaon 8.5 km beyond it. More in our Mathura & Vrindavan travel guide.
How many days to give Mathura and Vrindavan
Krishna Janmabhoomi and Vrindavan's main temples fit into a day, so the Mathura and Vrindavan tour can be a day from Delhi or Agra, or include a night. Every package here with a set itinerary gives Braj one night, enough for the temples' morning and evening sessions and an aarti on the Yamuna. Then the 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan with Goverdhan Barsana spends day two at Govardhan and Barsana, the 4 Days Mathura Vrindavan Agra Tour moves on to Agra for a sunrise Taj, and the 8 Days Mathura Vrindavan Kedarnath Haridwar Rishikesh Tour heads north to Haridwar and Kedarnath.
When to go
The cooler months, October to March, suit a day of temples on foot. From April to June the Braj plain bakes, and temperatures can touch 45°C. The festivals bring the biggest crowds: Holi week, when Barsana and Nandgaon play Lathmar Holi, and Janmashtami, Krishna's birthday, celebrated at midnight. In 2026 Holi fell on 4 March and Janmashtami on 4 September; both move each year with the Hindu calendar. Govardhan fills for the Mudiya Purnima fair at Guru Purnima, in July. Book early for any of these dates.
How to reach Mathura and Vrindavan
Mathura is about 145 km from Delhi and 56 km from Agra, linked to both by the Yamuna Expressway, so most trips start from one or the other by car. Mathura Junction is a major stop on the Delhi–Agra railway. Agra's Kheria airport is the nearest, but most international travellers land in Delhi; the new Noida airport at Jewar, open to domestic flights since June 2026, is closer to Mathura than Delhi's main airport. Within Braj, Vrindavan is 15 km from Mathura, Govardhan 26 km and Barsana 47 km by road, so a private car makes the circuit simple.
What our Mathura and Vrindavan tour packages include
Every package here comes with a private car and driver. On the Braj itineraries a local guide takes you through the temples: the 2-day Govardhan and Barsana trip and the 4-day tour with Agra each list one, and the Mathura and Vrindavan tour times its guide and car to darshan hours. The 4-day tour adds a guide in Agra, and the 8-day route adds aarti seating in Haridwar and Rishikesh. On the 2-day trip the hotel is an add-on. Donations, Agra's monument fees, lunches and dinners are extra, as each package lists.
How to choose your Mathura and Vrindavan tour package
For the twin towns alone, in a day or with a night, take the Mathura and Vrindavan tour. For the wider Braj circuit, with Govardhan's hill and Radha's Barsana, take the 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan with Goverdhan Barsana. On a first trip to India, or wanting the Taj Mahal too, choose the 4 Days Mathura Vrindavan Agra Tour, planned around the Taj's Friday closure. Fit pilgrims ready for a long mountain walk can continue to Kedarnath on the 8-day tour, in its season only. For the Taj itself, see Agra tour packages; for the wider state, Uttar Pradesh tour packages.
