Parmarth Niketan or Triveni Ghat: which aarti should I see?
Either, or both on different evenings. Triveni Ghat, the main bathing ghat in the town centre, holds the best-known public aarti, with lamps, drums and chanting across the whole ghat. Parmarth Niketan's begins at sunset on the ashram's own ghat, after a yagna that starts half an hour earlier, and draws visitors of every faith. Its time moves with the sunset through the year. Where our packages include aarti seating in Rishikesh, it is at Parmarth Niketan.
When can I go white-water rafting in Rishikesh?
From September to June. Rafting is suspended in July and August, when the monsoon raises the Ganga, and the district can halt it earlier: in 2025 it stopped on 24 June, with the river close to its warning level. The usual run is the stretch of about 11 km from Shivpuri down to Lakshman Jhula. Spiritual India includes one rafting run; on the North India Classic the fee is not included.
Can I still walk across Lakshman Jhula?
No. Lakshman Jhula, the 137-metre suspension bridge, was closed in July 2019 after an expert team found it unsafe. Ram Jhula, about 3 km away along the river, is closed to two-wheelers and has been shut at times for repairs. We check which crossings are open before you travel and plan your walks around them.
Is Rishikesh vegetarian and alcohol-free?
Largely, yes. Meat and fish may not be sold within Rishikesh's municipal limits, eggs are banned there too, a rule the Supreme Court upheld in 2004, and liquor is not sold in the town's religious areas. Plan on vegetarian meals while you are here. Lunches and dinners are not included in our Rishikesh packages, so you are free to choose where you eat.
What else can I do on a free day in Rishikesh?
Walk through the ruins of the Beatles Ashram, also called Chaurasi Kutia, in a forest patch in Swargashram, with portraits of the band painted on its walls. See Bharat Mandir near Triveni Ghat, one of the town's oldest shrines. Take the waterfall trail, or the Kunjapuri trek for a view of snow peaks. For adrenaline, Mohanchatti has bungee jumping from up to 83 metres. On Spiritual India the last full day is left free for this.
Can I start the Char Dham Yatra from Rishikesh?
Yes. Rishikesh and Haridwar are the usual starting points, and the state runs a physical registration point at Rishikesh's Transit Camp alongside its online portal. Our Char Dham Yatra — 11 days begins with a night in Haridwar or Rishikesh and comes back here after Badrinath. Yoga days before or after are easy to add. For the full choice of yatras, see Char Dham Yatra tour packages; for the rest of the state, Uttarakhand tour packages.
About Rishikesh Tour Packages
Our private Rishikesh trips suit travellers who want yoga, the evening aarti and the river at their own pace, and pilgrims bound for the Himalayan temples. Spiritual India pairs Rishikesh with Varanasi, the North India Classic finishes here, and our Char Dham and Kedarnath yatras start or end here. Each is tailor-made around your dates, budget and group, and confirmed with a written quote before you pay.

Why go to Rishikesh
Rishikesh, on the Ganga in the Himalayan foothills, is the town Uttarakhand's tourism board calls the yoga capital of the world. It has many ashrams, some known internationally for yoga and philosophy, and most of those clustered in Swargashram, on the east bank, run courses for visitors. Every evening there is an aarti at Triveni Ghat, the main bathing ghat in the heart of town, and another at sunset on Parmarth Niketan's own ghat. Upstream, the usual rafting run starts at Shivpuri, 19 km away. In February 1968 the Beatles came here to learn meditation at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram, now a ruin. More in our Rishikesh travel guide.
How many days to give Rishikesh
Two nights cover an aarti, a yoga class and a rafting run: the North India Classic Tour — 14 days ends that way, with aarti seating on arrival and a free day for the river or a class. For yoga, stay longer: on Spiritual India — Varanasi and Rishikesh, 8 days, five of the seven nights are spent here. Pilgrims pass through: the Char Dham Yatra — 11 days starts with a night in Haridwar or Rishikesh and ends with one here, and the 8 Days Mathura Vrindavan Kedarnath Haridwar Rishikesh Tour closes with a night by the river after Kedarnath.
When to go
October to March suits early yoga and evenings on the ghats, though winter mornings are cool. March is festival month, with Parmarth Niketan's International Yoga Festival and the state's own yoga festival each held over a week. April to June is hot, but classes and rafting carry on. The monsoon is the one real gap. Rafting stops in July and August, and it can stop sooner when the river rises, as it did on 24 June 2025; it restarts in September.
How to reach Rishikesh
The nearest airport is Dehradun's Jolly Grant, 21 km away, with daily flights from Delhi; each of our Rishikesh itineraries ends with a transfer there. Rishikesh has its own railway station, but Haridwar, about 25 km downstream, is on the main line from Delhi and has more trains, among them a morning Shatabdi. By road, Rishikesh is about 224 km from Delhi. Arriving from Varanasi, as Spiritual India and the North India Classic do, means a flight to Dehradun, usually via Delhi, or a long train journey.
What our Rishikesh tour packages include
Every package here gives you a private car and driver; the rest depends on the trip, as each package lists. Spiritual India includes one rafting run and one yoga class, with hotel stays and daily breakfast. The North India Classic includes aarti seating in Rishikesh and its domestic flights, but leaves rafting and yoga fees to you. On the Char Dham Yatra — 11 days your rooms, breakfasts and yatra registration are arranged for you, while the 8-day Kedarnath tour includes aarti seating in Haridwar and Rishikesh. Extra classes, a teacher-training course, lunches and dinners are not included.
How to choose your Rishikesh tour package
Start from what brings you here. Yoga and the river, with Varanasi's rituals first, means Spiritual India, the package that gives Rishikesh the most time. A first, long trip through North India that ends somewhere quieter is the North India Classic. Pilgrims choose between the Char Dham Yatra — 11 days for all four Himalayan temples and the 8-day Kedarnath tour, which adds Mathura and Vrindavan. Already staying here, add the Haridwar day trip from Rishikesh for the aarti at Har Ki Pauri. None of these Rishikesh holiday packages is a fixed group departure; each is reshaped around your dates.
