What are the Meenakshi Amman temple's opening hours?
By the temple's own published timings it is open from 5 am to 12.30 pm and from 4 to 10 pm, and closed in between; hours change during festivals. The day's poojas begin with the Thiruvanandal pooja at 5.30 am and end with the Palliyarai pooja at 9.30 pm. Come early for the halls in the morning light, and come back after dark for the last ceremony of the day.
What is the Palliyarai ceremony, and when can I see it?
It is the temple's last ritual of the day, held at 9.30 pm by the temple's schedule. Sundareswarar is carried in a palanquin, with music, to Meenakshi's shrine for the night. It is worship rather than a show: stand where the temple staff indicate, and keep your phone away. Every package listed here stays two nights in Madurai, so one evening can be kept free for it.
What should I know before entering the Meenakshi temple?
Shoes are left at the free footwear counters at the temple's five entrances, where there are also rooms to leave bags, and the temple lists lockers for phones. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered. Photography and filming are not allowed inside, and the state's temple phone rules have changed recently, so expect to switch your phone off or leave it in a locker. For a shorter queue at the main shrines, the temple sells special-entrance tickets.
What else is there to see in Madurai?
The palace King Thirumalai Nayak built in 1636 is about 1.5 km from the temple; its entrance gate, main hall and dance hall survive. The Gandhi Memorial Museum is in Rani Mangammal's old palace. The Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam, a tank of about 16 acres, is about 4 km east of the temple, and two hill temples are close: Thirupparankundram, one of Murugan's six abodes, about 8 km south, and Azhagar Kovil, about 21 km north-east.
Should I plan my Madurai visit around the Chithirai festival?
Only if you want the festival itself. It falls in the Tamil month of Chithirai, in April or May, on dates the temple calendar sets each year. Its high point is the celestial wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar; its last days belong to Kallazhagar of the Alagar hills temple. The temple counts more than a million visitors over the festival: expect long queues and daily highs of about 37–38°C. For a calmer visit, go between December and February.
How long is the drive from Madurai to Rameswaram and Kanyakumari?
Rameswaram is about 175 km east, about three hours by road, ending with the bridge onto the island. Kanyakumari is about 240 km south. The South India Temple Trail and the six-day pilgrimage run Madurai, Rameswaram, Kanyakumari in that order, with a night at Rameswaram in between, so you never drive back to Madurai; the trip ends at Kanyakumari, under 100 km from Thiruvananthapuram's airport. See Rameswaram tour packages.
Can I continue from Madurai to Munnar and the backwaters?
Yes. The 10 Days South India Tour Package leaves Madurai on day 6 and crosses the Western Ghats by road into Kerala, with two nights in Munnar's tea hills, a night on an Alleppey houseboat with meals on board, and a last night in Kochi. A tailor-made trip can add Thekkady as well. See Munnar tour packages and Kerala tour packages.

Why go to Madurai
Madurai grew up around one temple, whose two deities are the goddess Meenakshi and Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva. The Meenakshi Amman temple is a walled complex of shrines and halls entered through four tall gateway towers, with the Golden Lotus tank inside and the Thousand Pillar Hall, where some of the carved pillars ring with a different note when tapped. Its day runs from the first pooja at 5.30 am to the Palliyarai ceremony at 9.30 pm. Around it are a 17th-century palace, the Gandhi Memorial Museum and hill temples within a short drive. More in our Madurai travel guide.
How many days to give Madurai
Each package listed here gives Madurai two nights with a full day between them: time for the temple in the morning, again in the evening, and the 9.30 pm ceremony. On the South India Temple Trail — 10 days you arrive from Thanjavur on day 5, spend day 6 at the temple and market, and leave for Rameswaram. The 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour arrives after darshan at Tirumala on day 2 and gives day 3 to the temple. The 10 Days South India Tour Package arrives from Thanjavur on day 4, spends day 5 at the temple and leaves for Munnar on day 6.
When to go
Tamil Nadu Tourism names December to February as Madurai's best months, and they are its coolest: in the state's 2021–23 weather records, average daily highs were about 31–34°C, against 37–38°C from April to June. Madurai stays hot from July to September too, at about 35–37°C. October to December is its wettest stretch, with the northeast monsoon. The Chithirai festival, in April or May, draws more than a million people by the temple's own count, and in January or February the float festival takes the deities onto the Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam tank. How to reach Madurai
Madurai has its own airport at Avaniyapuram, about 12 km from the city, with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai, and from Colombo, Dubai and Singapore; for a trip to the deep south it saves the long drive down from Chennai. Madurai Junction is the city's main railway station. Our packages reach Madurai by road, from Thanjavur or, on the six-day pilgrimage, from Tirupati, and leave for Rameswaram, about 175 km east (about three hours by road, over the Pamban bridge), or west over the Western Ghats to Munnar in Kerala.
What our Madurai tour packages include
A private car and driver for the whole trip comes with every package listed here, so the drives in and out of Madurai are door to door. The South India Temple Trail and the 10 Days South India Tour Package add a local guide at the major temple sites, the Meenakshi Amman temple among them, and daily breakfast; the temple trail also lists hotel stays confirmed at enquiry. The six-day pilgrimage includes assistance with darshan queues and special-entry tickets where applicable. Temple camera and special-entry fees, lunches and dinners, flights and travel insurance are extra, as each package lists.
How to choose your Madurai tour package
If temples are the point of your trip, the South India Temple Trail — 10 days continues from Madurai to Rameswaram's island temple and Kanyakumari. If you want Kerala's hills and backwaters as well, the 10 Days South India Tour Package turns west to Munnar, Alleppey and Kochi. For a pilgrimage that begins with darshan at Tirumala, the 6 Days Tirupati Madurai Rameshwaram Kanyakumari Tour is the shortest of these, with a night each in Rameswaram and Kanyakumari after Madurai. With only a few days, ask about the Rameswaram and Madurai temple trail, planned around your dates.
