What time does the Golden Temple open, and when is the Palki Sahib procession?
SGPC's published routine opens the sanctum doors between 2 and 3 am, depending on the season. The Palki Sahib procession then carries the Guru Granth Sahib from the Akal Takht to the sanctum, at about 5 am from mid-October to mid-February and up to an hour earlier in summer; at night it returns between about 9.45 and 10.45 pm. The langar runs day and night. Early morning is usually the calmest time to join the queue for the sanctum.
What are the rules for visiting the Golden Temple?
Hand in your shoes and socks at the shoe counters and cover your head before you enter: the rule applies to everyone, men and women alike, and scarves are provided if you have none. Dress modestly, and keep to the queue for the sanctum, which crosses the causeway over the pool. On our Golden Temple, Amritsar tour, your guide briefs you on the etiquette before you arrive, including where photographs are not appropriate.
How does the langar work?
Everyone is welcome, whatever their faith, caste or background. The langar serves free vegetarian meals through the day and night, eaten sitting together in rows on the floor, a practice called pangat. Punjab Tourism puts the numbers in the tens of thousands every day, and the district administration says they reach 100,000 on special occasions. On the Golden Temple tour, a meal in the langar hall is built into the visit.
What time is the Attari–Wagah ceremony, and how early should I arrive?
The Border Security Force lowers the flags at the Attari–Wagah border every evening, late each afternoon, before sunset, at a time that moves with the seasons, so we confirm it for your date. Entry is free, and Punjab Tourism advises reaching the gallery at least 45 minutes early. BSF can also close it to the public at short notice, so check a day ahead.
Is Jallianwala Bagh worth visiting?
Yes, and it is a short walk from the Golden Temple. On 13 April 1919, Baisakhi Day, British troops under Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer fired on a peaceful gathering here; the walls still carry bullet marks, the well into which people jumped to escape is preserved, and a Martyrs' Gallery tells the story. Entry is free, and it is open daily from early morning into the evening. The ten-day tour visits it on its last full day in Amritsar.
What else is there to see in Amritsar besides the Golden Temple?
Inside the complex, the Central Sikh Museum and an underground Interpretation Centre, with free English headsets, explain Sikh history. In the city, the Partition Museum in the Town Hall (closed on Mondays) tells the story of 1947; Gobindgarh Fort, a few kilometres away, is best in the evening for its shows; the Durgiana Temple, about 1.5 km away, is built in the Golden Temple's style; and Heritage Street runs for about a kilometre from the Town Hall to the temple.
Can I stay at the Golden Temple itself?
SGPC, which manages the Golden Temple, runs pilgrim rest houses (sarais) around the complex, with reception counters open round the clock and a few rooms set aside for foreign visitors; rooms are allotted first come, first served, subject to availability. The Golden Temple, Amritsar tour does not include accommodation, so the specialist can add a hotel near the temple to your written quote instead.

Why go to Amritsar
Amritsar grew around a pool, and its name says so: amrit and sarovar, the pool of nectar in which Sri Harmandir Sahib, also called Sri Darbar Sahib or the Golden Temple, stands. Guru Arjan designed the shrine with doors on all four sides, open to everyone, and Maharaja Ranjit Singh had it overlaid with gold around 1830. The Akal Takht, the first seat of Sikh authority, faces it, and the langar serves free meals to tens of thousands of people a day, through the day and night. A short walk away, Jallianwala Bagh keeps the bullet-marked walls of the 1919 massacre, and the Partition Museum in the Town Hall tells the story of 1947.
How many days to give Amritsar
Plan on two nights, so you can see the Golden Temple at dawn and again lit after dark, and still reach Attari for the evening ceremony. The Golden Temple, Amritsar tour needs at least half a day for the temple, the Akal Takht and a meal in the langar, or a full day with the museum and both the morning and night ceremonies. The 10 Days Delhi Agra Jaipur with Golden Temple Tour gives Amritsar three nights: a temple day ending at Attari, then Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum. Background: our Amritsar travel guide.
When to go
Our Amritsar trips are planned for October to March. Summer is very hot: IMD's Amritsar station recorded 46°C in May 2024 and nearly 46°C in June 2025, and July and August bring the monsoon's humid, rainy weeks. December and January are cold, with nights close to freezing and dense morning fog that can hold up flights and trains. The temple is open all year; it is lit up for Diwali, and Vaisakhi, on 13 or 14 April, brings large gatherings. Month by month: best time to visit India.
How to reach Amritsar
Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, about 11 km from the city centre, has domestic and international flights; the ten-day tour flies in and out from Delhi. Amritsar Junction railway station is about 2 km from the Golden Temple, with direct trains from New Delhi that include Shatabdi Express services. By road, Delhi is 447 km away. The Attari border, for the evening ceremony, is about 30 km west of the city on the road to Lahore.
What our Amritsar tour packages include
All our Amritsar packages are private. The Golden Temple, Amritsar tour arranges a private guide and vehicle in Amritsar, with a full briefing on dress and etiquette before you reach the temple and time set aside for the langar; a hotel, if you want one, goes into the same written quote. The ten-day tour includes the flights between Delhi and Amritsar in both directions, a local guide in each city and daily breakfast. Lunches, dinners, monument entry fees, international flights and travel insurance are extra, and so are donations at the temple.
How to choose your Amritsar tour package
Choose the Golden Temple, Amritsar tour if you are already in North India, or adding Amritsar to a trip of your own: a guide plans the visit around the dawn and night ceremonies, the langar and the queue for the sanctum. Choose the ten-day tour for a first trip to India that joins Delhi, Agra and Jaipur to three nights in Amritsar, flying rather than driving the long way north. A tailor-made trip suits better for Amritsar with more of Punjab, or as a starting point for the hills.
