India on a Budget: What Actually Moves the Cost
Independent travel on local transport and budget guesthouses can cost a fraction of a private guided trip, though the figure varies enormously by region and season. Within our own private-trip model, the biggest levers are trip length, region count, season, and hotel tier, in roughly that order.

This is genuinely relative. Independent travel on local transport and budget guesthouses can cost a fraction of a private guided trip, though we don't have a single verified daily figure to quote for that style of travel, since it varies enormously by region, season and how you travel. (confirmed on enquiry) Our own private trips start from about $150 per person per day for a 4-star hotel, private guide and private vehicle — see our full cost guide for the detail — and there are real ways to bring that down without cutting the things that matter.
- Trip length — a shorter, focused trip on one region costs less overall than a long multi-region one, even at the same daily rate.
- Number of regions — fewer regions means fewer internal flights and less repositioning.
- Season — travelling shoulder season (September, or parts of the monsoon) is typically cheaper and less crowded than the October-to-March peak.
- Hotel tier — the gap between the 4-star and 5-star tiers is the single biggest lever in our own rate sheet.
- Group size — travelling as a small group rather than solo spreads the private-vehicle cost further.
- A private guide for temples, forts and language — this is where the value of the trip actually lives, and it's not the place to save.
- Verified transport, especially after dark or on longer road days — this is a safety line, not a comfort upgrade.
- Your visa and e-Arrival Card — always apply on the official government sites, never a lookalike charging more.
Can you visit India on a budget?
Yes, in relative terms — independent travel can cost a fraction of a private trip, though the figure varies widely by region and style.
What's the cheapest way to see India?
A shorter trip focused on one region, in shoulder season, at the 4-star tier, is the most effective way to bring the cost down within a private-trip model.
Should I cut out a private guide to save money in India?
We'd advise against it — it's where most of the trip's real value sits, and it's not where the biggest savings are anyway.
Is shoulder season cheaper for an India trip?
Generally yes — September and parts of the monsoon season tend to be less crowded and less expensive than the October-to-March peak.

5/51 week agoTook my teenage sons and was braced for boredom. Instead the guide got them involved — spotting carvings, tasting street snacks, haggling for a scarf. Best day of the holiday by a distance.

4/51 month agoExcellent guide and a well-paced day. My only note is that lunch was at a fairly touristy restaurant; food was fine but we would have preferred somewhere more local. Otherwise faultless.

5/52 months agoWe asked for a slower pace because of a bad knee and they rebuilt the day around it without any drama — fewer steps, more sitting, same highlights. That flexibility is why I would book again.
