Two nights, which is what most of our routes give it: a full day for Amber Fort and the walled city's City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, plus time for the bazaars. A single day covers the walled city or, on a day trip from Delhi, Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal and little else. Yes, but it is a long day: about three and a half to five hours' drive each way, depending on the route and traffic, and typically 14 to 16 hours door to door, which leaves time for Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal. Our Jaipur day trip from Delhi runs with a private guide, vehicle and driver. If you can add a night, we usually suggest it: an overnight leaves time for the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and the bazaars.

The City Palace museum is open 9.30 am to 6.30 pm every day, with last tickets at 6 pm, and closes only on Dhulandi, the second day of Holi. Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar are run by the Rajasthan government, which sets their hours and can change them, so we confirm them for your dates and plan the day around the heat and the crowds.

For the state-run sights, yes: the Rajasthan government sells a composite ticket that covers several, including Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and the Albert Hall Museum. The City Palace sells its own tickets, including one combined with Jaigarh Fort and the royal cenotaphs. October to March, with warm days and cool nights; January averages about 22°C by day and 8°C at night. April to June is hot, with May averaging 41°C by day, so sightseeing is best kept to the cooler hours. July and August are the wettest months. By road, about three and a half to five hours in your own car with a driver, depending on the route and traffic, which our Golden Triangle routes include. By train, direct services from Delhi to Jaipur Junction include a Shatabdi and a Vande Bharat. By air, flights from Delhi land at Jaipur International Airport (JAI). Coming from Agra instead, the road distance is about 240 km.

Yes: Jaipur, Delhi and Agra make up the Golden Triangle, and our six-day Golden Triangle Tour gives Jaipur two nights. From Jaipur, our routes continue to Udaipur, Jodhpur, Pushkar and Jaisalmer, to Ranthambore for tigers, or via Delhi to Varanasi or Amritsar. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so we plan the Agra day around that.

Jaipur is well set up for visitors as part of the Golden Triangle. Expect crowds and persistent touts at Amber Fort and the Hawa Mahal, and agree prices before you buy in the old city's bazaars. Light, breathable clothes that cover shoulders and knees suit both the forts and the temples, where you take your shoes off at the entrance. Wear comfortable shoes for Amber Fort, where the climb to the palace is steep in places. On winter evenings, when January nights average about 8°C, bring a warm layer.
