Pushkar Travel Guide: The Holy Lake, Its Temples and the Camel Fair
Pushkar is a Hindu pilgrimage town built around a holy lake, about 15 km from Ajmer and 145 km from Jaipur. The main places to visit in Pushkar are the lake and its 52 bathing ghats, the Brahma Temple, the hilltop Savitri Temple and Sadar Bazar, with evening prayers at Varah Ghat; the camel and livestock fair comes in October or November. One or two nights is enough.

All of RajasthanFrequently asked questions
Can visitors bathe in Pushkar Lake?
Yes. Pilgrims bathe at the ghats all year, and visitors may join them, although Rajasthan Tourism warns that the water may fall short of the standards you would expect elsewhere. Go in modestly dressed and leave your shoes on the steps.
What is Kartik Purnima in Pushkar?
The full-moon day of Kartik, the fair's main bathing day, when the ghats are at their most crowded. Rajasthan Tourism notes that the town also holds a festival for Brahma that day. The date moves with the lunar calendar, so check it before you plan.
Where can you stay for the Pushkar Fair?
In a hotel in town or in one of the tented camps near the fairground, on the edge of the desert. Both fill long before fair week, so book once you know your dates; our fair trip arranges your hotel or camp in advance, with any tented-camp upgrade charged separately.
What food can you find in Pushkar?
Only vegetarian food: kachori and samosa from the stalls, malpua for something sweet, and lassi flavoured with gulkand, a rose-petal preserve, at the cafés along the ghats. Rose essence from Pushkar, which Rajasthan Tourism calls the rose garden of Rajasthan, is exported.
About Pushkar Tours & Experiences
The best things to do in Pushkar are the evening prayers at Varah Ghat and the Brahma Temple's aarti, a climb or ropeway ride to the Savitri Temple, a camel ride to the dunes at sunset and, in Kartik, the camel and livestock fair. Our fair trip is built around the fair, and our Rajasthan Grand Tour stops here for two nights.

Things to do in Pushkar
Be at the lake for the evening prayers
As the light fades, bells ring and lamps are lit for the prayers at Varah Ghat, and the Brahma Temple holds an aarti of its own. The 52 ghats are places of worship: step down barefoot, dress modestly and ask before photographing anyone at prayer or in the water.
Visit the Brahma Temple
Rajasthan Tourism ranks Jagatpita Brahma Mandir, near the lake, first among the town's temples; look for the red spire and the hamsa, the swan of Brahma. Pilgrims usually bathe before going in. Our Rajasthan Grand Tour spends a morning at the ghats and this temple, then the afternoon in the bazaar.
Ride up to the Savitri Temple
Brahma's first wife has her temple on the hill behind his. Climb the long flight of steps or take the Savitri Mata ropeway, running since 2016; the top looks out over the lake, its crowd of temples and the dunes beyond.
Take a camel to the dunes
Pushkar sits on the desert's edge, and camel safaris wind out through nearby villages to reach the dunes as the sun sets. The Grand Tour's full day here closes with that sunset ride.
Go to the Pushkar Fair
In Kartik, usually October or November, traders fill the fairground with camels, cattle and horses, and the days around the trading bring contests such as matka phod (pot breaking), folk performances and hot-air balloons. Our Pushkar Camel Fair trip books your hotel or tented camp ahead, starts on the fairground early, when the trading is liveliest, and brings a guide to explain what happens at the ghats; plan on two or three days. Our Pushkar Camel Fair page describes the fair itself.
Choosing between our tours and experiences
The fair trip, one of our festival experiences in Pushkar, is for fair week, with a guide, a car and your bed booked early. At other times, the Grand Tour brings you here for two nights between Jaipur and Jodhpur. The Pushkar travel guide covers the town's sights and nearby Ajmer.
When to go for these
Camps around Pushkar open from October to February, by Rajasthan Tourism's account. At Ajmer, 15 km away and the nearest IMD station, May afternoons average about 40°C (1991–2020), and the state's tourism site suggests skipping March to May there. The fair's dates follow Kartik and move every year.
Planning tips
Book early for fair week, when beds in town and in the camps run out months ahead. Expect vegetarian food everywhere.
