Jaisalmer Travel Guide: The Living Fort, Havelis and the Dunes
Jaisalmer is the Thar Desert city built around a lived-in sandstone fort founded in 1156, 286 km by road from Jodhpur. The places to visit in Jaisalmer fill two or three days: the fort and its Jain temples, the carved havelis, Gadisar Lake and Bada Bagh, then a night on the Sam or Khuri dunes. October to March is the comfortable season.

What is there for children in Jaisalmer?
The camel ride, for children old enough to sit securely, with a camel cart for the youngest. Around Jaisalmer: boats on Gadisar, the tanks and aircraft at the War Museum, and the great Indian bustard displayed at the Government Museum.
How should you spend a single day in Jaisalmer?
Begin inside the fort while the Jain temples are open, see the havelis after lunch and watch the sun go down from Vyas Chhatri or Bada Bagh. The dunes need an afternoon and evening, or a night, of their own.
Can you see the great Indian bustard near Jaisalmer?
Possibly, in the Desert National Park, some 3,000 sq km of dunes, rock and salt lakes between Jaisalmer and Barmer districts and one of the bird's last refuges. Blackbuck, chinkara and desert foxes live there too. We do not run trips into the park.
Which dishes should you try in Jaisalmer?
Ker sangri, pyaz ki kachori, dal baati churma, mirchi bhajiya, a chilli fritter, and makhania lassi. Rooftop restaurants with views over the city are a good place to try them.
About Jaisalmer Tours & Experiences
The best things to do in Jaisalmer are a camel ride onto the Sam dunes at sunset with a night at a desert camp, a morning in the lived-in fort and its Jain temples, a walk between the carved havelis and an evening at Gadisar Lake. Our camel safari covers the dunes on their own, and our tours add the fort and havelis.

Things to do in Jaisalmer
Ride a camel onto the dunes at sunset
Our Thar Desert camel safari picks you up at your hotel in the afternoon and heads for the Sam dunes, about 40 km out, or another dune site. A handler helps you up for about an hour's ride to a high point for sunset, then a camp serves dinner with folk music and dance. Come back after dinner or stay the night.
Spend a night in a desert camp
Our 3 Days Jaisalmer Tour Package books a camp at Sam with a camel or jeep safari and an optional dawn ride, and the Rajasthan Grand Tour adds a camp night after two in town. Camps range from simple tents to Swiss tents with attached bathrooms, confirmed when you enquire.
Explore the living fort and its havelis
About 3,000 people live and work inside Jaisalmer Fort, so ask before taking their pictures. Go early: Incredible India lists the seven Jain temples as closing to visitors at noon. Below the walls, look for Salim Singh ki Haveli's peacock brackets and the stone elephants at Nathmal ki Haveli; our three-day package spends a morning at Patwon ki Haveli and Salim Singh's.
End the day at Gadisar Lake or Vyas Chhatri
Take a boat on Gadisar, the man-made lake by the fort, ringed with temples, ghats and chhatris, and stay for the laser and water show. For the sunset, Rajasthan Tourism names the cenotaphs of Vyas Chhatri, where algoza players may be heard.
Drive to Kuldhara and the border
Kuldhara, about 18 km out, was left by its villagers in the 1800s and never resettled. The Army's War Museum on the Jodhpur highway covers the 1965 and 1971 wars, with captured tanks and a Hunter aircraft. A separate long day reaches the Longewala memorial and Tanot Mata, some 120 km away; past Tanot, the border needs prior permission.
Choosing between our tours and experiences
Pick the camel safari, one of our desert experiences in Jaisalmer, if you only want the dunes. The three-day package adds the fort, havelis and Gadisar, with a car and driver; the Grand Tour fits Jaisalmer into the full Rajasthan loop. Both tours are on our Jaisalmer tour packages page; the Jaisalmer travel guide describes the sights.
When to go for these
Desert camps run from October to March. January in Jaisalmer averages about 23°C by day and 9°C at night, while May reaches 42°C (IMD, 1991–2020). The Desert Festival, with camel races, camel polo and puppeteers, falls in January or February.
Planning tips
For the dunes, cover up against sun and blowing sand with light, loose clothes and a hat, wear closed shoes and take water.
