Rann of Kutch Travel Guide: The White Rann, Bhuj and Beyond
The Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh in Gujarat's Kutch district that floods in the monsoon and dries into a white salt crust after the rains. The places to visit in Kutch start with the White Rann at Dhordo and the view from Kalo Dungar, both reached with a permit, then Bhuj's palaces and museum, the Harappan city of Dholavira and the craft villages.

Gandhidham Kutch, Gujarat, India
The first thing you notice when you arrive in Gandhidham Kutch Gujarat is how quietly it exists. No dramatic welcome boards. No rush of cameras. The city doesn’t seem interested in proving anything to you. It simply goes on with its day. And that’s usually when a traveler pauses and thinks—there’s something here I don’t understand yet.

All of GujaratFrequently asked questions
What are the best things to do in the Rann of Kutch?
On a first visit, be on the White Rann at Dhordo for sunset, drive up Kalo Dungar for the view over the salt, and spend a morning in the craft villages around Nirona. With another day, go to Dholavira or, in the monsoon and winter, to Chhari Dhand.
Is the Rann of Kutch worth visiting outside the festival?
In the dry months, yes. Gujarat Tourism's dawn-to-dusk hours for the White Rann do not depend on the tent city, and the permit still applies. In the monsoon the flat is under water, and April and May are hot.
Can foreign visitors get the White Rann permit online?
No. The Collector's online portal is only for Indian nationals, though every visitor needs one. Visitors on foreign passports should contact the Collector's office in Bhuj, or us, well before the trip.
What can you do in the Little Rann of Kutch?
Look for the Indian wild ass, whose only surviving population lives in its sanctuary with blackbuck and chinkara; greater flamingos and cranes arrive in winter. It is a separate trip from the White Rann, open from mid-October to mid-June and nearer Ahmedabad than Bhuj.

Things to do in Rann of Kutch
Watch the sunset on the White Rann
At Dhordo, near the border, the marsh that floods each monsoon dries into a crust of salt running to the horizon. Gujarat Tourism gives its hours as dawn to dusk, and every visitor needs a permit.
Spend an evening at Rann Utsav
In the festival season, the Gujarat Tourism Board's tent city at Dhordo has folk music and dance, craft stalls, ATV rides and paramotoring. Our Rann Utsav experience books a tent with proper beds and bathrooms and plans your time on the salt for sunset, or a full-moon night if the dates work.
Drive up Kalo Dungar
The Black Hill north of Khavda, at 462 m the top of Kutch, looks across the Great Rann, and its Dattatreya temple keeps a custom of feeding the jackals cooked rice late in the evening. Bring your own vehicle; photography is banned at the India Bridge nearby.
Tour the craft villages
At Nirona, north-west of Bhuj, the Khatri family keeps rogan painting alive with a thick castor-oil paste, and its workshops turn out lacquerware and bells too. The round mud bhungas of the Rann's hamlets are homes to embroiderers, dyers, leatherworkers and potters. Buy bandhani in Bhuj, and try dabeli on the road to Dhordo.
Watch flamingos at Chhari Dhand
This wetland reserve, some 80 km north-west of Bhuj, fills in the monsoon and holds thousands of flamingos and cranes into the winter.
Choosing between our tours and experiences
Our listing here is one experience, Rann Utsav: two or three days in the festival's tent city with a private guide and vehicle. It suits photographers, honeymooners and anyone more drawn to landscape than to temples and forts. Any tour package that stays in Kutch would show in a section of its own, and festival trips are under festivals in Kutch; pair the region with Ahmedabad and Gir.
When to go for these
November to February is the time, while the salt is dry and the festival runs on dates the state sets each season. IMD's Bhuj averages give January nights near 10°C, so pack layers for evenings on the salt, while April and May reach about 39°C by day.
Planning tips
Both the White Rann and Kalo Dungar lie in notified areas. Apply on the Kutch Collector's online portal, uploading the lead traveller's ID, or get the permit at the Bhirandiyara checkpost before Dhordo, and keep to the places it covers. Bhuj and the drive are covered in our Rann of Kutch travel guide.
