Rann Utsav, Kutch

Private experience

Festivals & EventsRann of Kutch

Rann Utsav is a Gujarat Tourism festival built around the white salt desert of the Rann of Kutch, with a purpose-built tented city, folk music and dance, craft stalls and moonlit walks on the salt flats. Unlike India's lunar festivals, it runs across a fixed winter season, broadly November to February, rather than a single date; exact opening and closing dates for the season are confirmed on enquiry.

  • The salt flats are best seen without shoes for photographs, but the ground can be uneven; take care underfoot.

Full description

The Rann of Kutch is a vast seasonal salt marsh that, in the dry winter months, becomes a blinding white desert stretching to the horizon. Rann Utsav is Gujarat Tourism's response: a purpose-built tented camp near Dhordo village, with cultural performances, craft bazaars showcasing Kutchi embroidery and mirror-work, and organised trips onto the salt flats, best at sunset or under a full moon.

It is as much about the landscape as the programme — the white desert itself, especially by moonlight, is the reason most travellers come.

Important information

Rann of Kutch

Know before you go

  • Kutch is remote from most other Gujarat sights, so plan this as its own trip or paired with Ahmedabad and the Gir forest rather than a quick add-on.

Duration and season

Two to three days is typical. The festival runs for the winter season, broadly November to February, rather than fixed dates — we confirm the season's actual opening and closing dates and recommend the best window for your priorities (full moon nights are especially popular).
