South Goa Travel Guide: Beaches, Forts, Mansions and Planning

South Goa is the long, quieter southern half of Goa's coast, with wide sands at Colva, Benaulim and Varca, small coves at Palolem, Patnem and Agonda, and forts, mansions and a wildlife sanctuary inland. The places to visit in South Goa run from Margao and Chandor to Cabo de Rama and Cotigao. October to March is the main season.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best things to do in South Goa?

Base yourself on one beach, Palolem for kayaks, boats and yoga or Agonda for quiet, and add one outing a day: Cotigao in the morning, Cabo de Rama for the sunset or Chandor's houses. The free hours between retreat classes leave room for them.

Where do Olive Ridley turtles nest in South Goa?

At Galgibaga and Agonda, which GTDC names, with Morjim in the north, as Goa's three nesting beaches for these protected turtles. The northern end of Galgibaga is set aside for the nests; the beach has no shacks and a rough sea, so swim with care.

How do you get to Butterfly Beach?

Only by boat: Incredible India describes a cove reachable only from the sea, with trips from Palolem. Plan it for the dry months, since Goa's water-sports rules halt boat trips in the monsoon, and wear the life jacket you are given.

What is there for children to do in South Goa?

Palolem's calm bay suits first swims and kayaks. The Naval Aviation Museum near Dabolim lines up 13 aircraft and has a jet-cockpit simulator, and the Goa Chitra Museum in Benaulim shows some 4,000 objects from village life, from farm tools to carriages. Cotigao's treetop deck rewards an early start.

About South Goa Tours & Experiences

The best things to do in South Goa are unhurried: paddle a kayak in Palolem's sheltered bay, take an early boat out for dolphins, watch the sunset from Cabo de Rama, climb to Cotigao's treetop deck and see inside Chandor's old mansions. Our Goa yoga retreat is based here, and the Goa Beach Escape ends with two nights on this coast.

Things to do in South Goa

Kayaks and calm water at Palolem

Palolem's white sand faces a bay held between two headlands, and Incredible India rates it one of Goa's safest places to swim, with kayaks and paddleboards to take out on the water. Beach huts go up along the sand each season.

Dolphin boats from Palolem

Fishermen at Palolem take visitors out to look for dolphins, best in the early morning by Incredible India's account; boats also leave from Colva. Goa's water-sports policy requires a registered operator for these trips and stops them in the monsoon.

Yoga by the sea

Classes on our Goa yoga retreat are held on the sand or in a shaded studio near Palolem, Agonda or Patnem, at sunrise or sunset, and the hours between classes are free; massage or meditation can be added, and we can point you to an alcohol-free centre.

Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary

Cotigao, an easy day trip from Palolem, protects 86 sq km of forest on the Karnataka border. Climb to the deck built into a 25-metre tree above a waterhole, where animals drink at dawn and dusk, and look out for Malabar trogons and flying squirrels; it opens daily from 7 am to 5.30 pm.

Cabo de Rama at sunset

About 16 km north of Agonda, the laterite fort of Cabo de Rama is GTDC's pick for a sunset over the Arabian Sea. Walk the walls, look into St Anthony's church, still in use, or take the steep path down to the beach.

Chandor's mansions

Inland, Chandor keeps some of Goa's grandest Indo-Portuguese houses, among them the 17th-century Braganza House, with a chapel holding a relic of St Francis Xavier and a library of leather-bound books. Incredible India also lists early-morning hot-air balloon flights from Chandor, weather permitting.

Choosing between our tours and experiences

The yoga retreat is a stay in itself: days built around practice on a quiet beach, for beginners and regular practitioners, couples or solo travellers. The Goa Beach Escape comes south only for its last two nights, with a free day on Palolem or Agonda, or by a resort pool near Majorda, and an optional sunset cruise.

When to go for these

Incredible India gives November to February as Palolem's best months, and our retreat's reliable season begins in mid-November. In the monsoon months the sea turns rough, boat trips stop and many beach huts and retreats close, though GTDC rates Cotigao in the green monsoon too. For the beaches themselves, read our South Goa guide.
