Panjim Travel Guide: Fontainhas, the Mandovi and Old Goa

Panjim (Panaji), Goa's capital, stands at the mouth of the Mandovi River. The main places to visit in Panjim are the old Fontainhas quarter, the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception above Church Square, the museums and the riverfront, with Miramar beach and Dona Paula a few kilometres away and Old Goa's UNESCO-listed churches a short drive off. One or two days is enough.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best things to do in Panjim?

Walk Fontainhas and Church Square in the morning, spend the afternoon in a museum or on the Chorão ferry, and be on the Mandovi for the sunset, then eat Goan food. Give a second day to Old Goa's churches, a short drive away.

What should you buy in Panjim?

Mostly food. Incredible India suggests chorizo from the women who sell it in the Panjim market, feni, which has a Geographical Indication tag, recheado masala, jars of prawn balchão and bebinca, and GTDC adds cashews and guava cheese. For crafts, Goa's government-run Aparanta stores sell pottery, bamboo and brassware.

What can couples do in Panjim?

Take the sunset cruise, then have dinner in a Fontainhas tavern. Next morning, join the walkers on the shore from Miramar to Caranzalem. In the Christmas weeks, a cruise past the lit-up riverfront makes a good evening.

What is there to do near Panjim?

Old Goa's World Heritage churches are a short drive away, the restored Reis Magos Fort, across the Mandovi, is now a cultural centre, and Dona Paula's jetty, about 7 km off, has jet skis for hire. Calangute, on the northern beach belt, is about 15 km away.

About Panjim Tours & Experiences

The best things to do in Panjim are on foot and on the river: wander the lanes of Fontainhas, cruise the Mandovi at sunset, ride the Ribandar ferry to Chorão's mangrove sanctuary, see a Konkani tiatr and eat xacuti and bebinca, ideally during Carnival or the film festival. Our Goa sunset cruise covers the river, transport to the jetty included.

Things to do in Panjim

A sunset cruise on the Mandovi

Our Goa sunset cruise drives you to a jetty near the city, boards before sunset and is back soon after dark, an hour to ninety minutes later. Boats usually have an open upper deck, where places at the rail fill first, and many add music or a folk-dance set. GTDC also runs evening launches of its own, some heading downriver for the sunset and others upriver towards Chorão island.

Fontainhas and São Tomé on foot

Give a morning or a late afternoon to Fontainhas and São Tomé, Panjim's Latin Quarter, where Incredible India points to galleries and restaurants among the old houses. Stop at a tavern for feni or a bakery for bebinca, and remember that the lanes are lived in.

Ferries and the bird sanctuary

Two short river crossings make an outing: the Betim boat, which Goa Tourism notes still runs despite the bridges, and the Ribandar ferry to Chorão island, where a boat trip through the mangroves of the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary looks for herons and mudskippers.

A tiatr

For theatre in Konkani, see a tiatr, the stage play that Incredible India calls the core of Goan culture; it says you can catch one in Panjim.

Festivals

Goa's largest Carnival parade rolls through Panjim for four days before Lent, in February or March, and Shigmo's floats follow in March or April. The film festival adds events along the promenade every November, and the Immaculate Conception church keeps its feast, with a riverfront fair, on 8 December.

Goan food

Order xacuti, its gravy built on more than a dozen roasted spices, sour-hot ambot tik, green chicken cafreal and sorpotel with sannas, then bebinca, the layered coconut cake that legend credits to a nun at Old Goa's Santa Monica convent.

Choosing between our tours and experiences

Panjim has one trip of ours, the sunset cruise, an evening experience rather than a tour. It suits couples and anyone who would rather spend the evening on the water than in a club, and you can reach the jetties easily from a hotel on either coast. Our tours and other experiences are on the Goa page.

When to go for these

The dry months, October to March, are the season; for the cruise, mid-November to February brings the most dependable sunsets. GTDC singles out Christmas and New Year for a river cruise, when Panjim's waterfront is outlined in fairy lights. From June to September rough weather can affect sailings. The sights themselves, and how to arrive, are in our Panjim guide.
