North Goa Travel Guide: Beaches, Forts, Markets and Planning
North Goa is the coast between the Mandovi and the Terekhol rivers, from Fort Aguada and Calangute to Anjuna, Vagator and Arambol. The places to visit in North Goa are its beaches and forts, its weekly markets, the Neo-Gothic church at Saligao and the waterfalls and lakes inland. October to March is the main season, and December and New Year are the busiest weeks.

All of GoaFrequently asked questions
What are the best things to do in North Goa?
Mix the lively with the quiet: a ride at Baga, the Saturday night market and an evening in Baga's bars, then Fort Aguada's jail museum, Chapora's walls, a dolphin boat and a walk on Morjim, one of Goa's three nesting beaches for Olive Ridley turtles.
What can you do in North Goa in one day?
Drive the coast: a morning at Calangute or Baga, lunch at a shack, then Anjuna, best on a Wednesday for the flea market, or the cliffs of Vagator, and the evening in Baga or back at your hotel. That is how our north beaches tour runs a single day.
What can you do with kids in North Goa?
Banana boats at Baga suit mixed ages, operators must carry children's life jackets, and the creek ride through the mangroves is gentler still. Away from the sand, try the ship-shaped Houses of Goa museum at Porvorim. At Calangute, where the seabed drops suddenly, swim only between the lifeguard flags.
What adventure activities are there in North Goa?
Beyond Baga's rides, Incredible India lists paragliding at Arambol, a bungee jump at Mayem Lake in Bicholim and, from June to October, white-water rafting on the Mhadei in Sattari. We do not run these, so check that the operator is registered with Goa's Department of Tourism.
About North Goa Tours & Experiences
The best things to do in North Goa follow the coast north of the Mandovi: hop between Calangute, Baga, Anjuna and Vagator, try a parasail at Baga, browse Anjuna's Wednesday flea market or a Saturday night market, look for dolphins from a boat and walk the forts at Aguada and Chapora. Both our trips here are tours with a car and driver.

Things to do in North Goa
Beach-hopping from Calangute to Vagator
From Sinquerim to Baga the beach never breaks, and Anjuna and Vagator are a short drive further on. With our Goa north beaches tour, a guide picks beaches and shacks to suit you and a driver handles the roads, for a day or for the length of your stay.
Rides at Baga and Calangute
Baga has the widest choice of rides, from jet skis and parasails to banana and bumper boats, and Calangute is the other big centre. Goa's rules keep operators to buoyed zones, require life jackets in every size and halt parasailing once the wind passes 15 mph. The north beaches tour leaves rides out of its price and points you to our Goa water sports page.
Markets through the week
Anjuna's flea market is on Wednesdays and Mapusa's on Fridays; Saturdays bring a sunset market on the sand at Arambol and night markets at Arpora and Baga, which Incredible India recommends for food and impromptu shows. The Goa Beach Escape builds its second day around Anjuna or Arpora when the dates line up.
Fort Aguada and Chapora
Fort Aguada, built by the Portuguese in 1612 against the Dutch, is named after the spring inside, where ships took on fresh water. Its jail, Goa's largest prison until 2015, is now the Freedom Struggle Museum, recalling liberation fighters such as T B Cunha and Ram Manohar Lohia. Chapora Fort watches over Vagator from its hill.
Dolphins and Baga creek
Boats leave Sinquerim and Baga to look for dolphins, which Incredible India says are often seen a kilometre or two out, and gentler rides go up Baga creek through the mangroves.
Choosing between our tours and experiences
Both North Goa trips are tours. The north beaches tour suits a holiday spent in the north, since its car, driver and guide stay as long as you do; the Goa Beach Escape gives the north two nights with hotel and breakfast, then moves on to Old Goa, Panjim and the south. Neither includes water sports. Both appear on our North Goa tour packages page.
When to go for these
Come between October and March: our north beaches tour finds every shack and bar open from mid-November to February, and Christmas to New Year is busiest. From June to September the sea turns rough, rides stop and many shacks shut. Getting there by air or rail is covered in our North Goa guide.
